TRAFFIC ENGINEERING (ELECTIVE)

Time: 03 Hours
Maximum Marks: 100
Instructions to candidates:
Answer TWO full questions from PART-A and PART-B and ONE question from
PART-C
Statistical Charts/tables are permitted. Use graph sheet if required

PART- A
1 a Briefly discuss the vehicle characteristics which affect the road design.
b Compute the various resistances developed for a vehicle in motion and
obtain the engine HP required for a car of weight 2T required to
accelerate at a rate of 3m/sec2 in the 1st gear from a speed of 10
Kmph. The bitumen road is of +1% grade and the vehicle frontal area
is 2 m2.The tyre has a radius of 0.33 m and the rear axle gear ratio is
3.82:1 and the 1st gear ratio is 2.78:1.Assume transmission efficiency
as 0.9.

2 a State the objectives of volume studies. Indicate how the data is

represented along with their advantages.
b Traffic speed data is collected for the passing vehicles. Analyze the
data and determine the design speed, speed limits /median speed.

3 a Discuss the various accident preventive measures underlining the

importance of 3Es.

b A vehicle skids through a distance of 40 m on a bitumen surface and

then 10 m on adjacent gravel shoulder before coming to halt. The drag
factors are 0.5 and 0.6 respectively. Calculate the speed of the vehicle
before skid.

PART- B
4 a Derive an equation for car following theory.
b The following information is obtained from a traffic analysis data.
Obtain the total trips generated when the population of the zone
reaches 40 thousand.
