From the Pastor’s Desk
My Dear People:
I read an article recently about teaching high
school students religion. The author said
students should be taught reasons for God’s
existence and for the Church; but equally
important is teaching the students to
experience God. We might say this is true
for all of us. To continue with our faith we
need that ongoing personal relationship with
God.
God is so available to us and comes to us in
so many different ways. Today, forty of our
second graders from the school will receive
Jesus in the Eucharist for the first time. I will
tell them how important they are today with
fine apparel and pictures aplenty. But that is
only because Jesus, our Savior, is so
important and is willing to come to them.
Congratulations to all forty first
communicants and thanks to the catechists
and parents for opening the doors of faith for
these young people.
Tuesday, sixty-four of our eighth-graders will
experience God in a personal way with the
reception of the Holy Spirit in the sacrament
of Confirmation. This sacrament completes
baptism and firms up the baptismal
commitment. Though we speak of the
Confirmed as being adult Christians, this
does not mean that they stop learning about
their faith. It means they have reached
adulthood spiritually, but the journey of
learning and practicing the faith is still going
on.
In preparation for Confirmation these eighth-
graders have done a service project to better
teach them that the way of Jesus is “service
to others.” They have made a retreat to
focus on the coming spiritual event of
receiving a special presence of the Holy
Spirit in their lives. After confirmation they
will have a special claim on the Holy Spirit for
wisdom, courage, knowledge, understanding
and the other gifts of the Spirit. Teenagers
live in a world of temptation, and it is only
with God’s help that they are “wise” enough
to make the right choices amidst the many
decisions and wrong avenues that are
offered to them in our very secular world.
Vatican II states:
“By confirmation the faithful
are more perfectly bound to
the Church and are endowed
with the special strength of the
Holy Spirit. Hence they are,
as true witnesses of Christ,
more strictly obliged to spread
the faith by word and deed.”
Pray for our young people who on this
Tuesday night will recommit themselves to
the Lord, and God will once more touch
them, this time in a special way with the Spirit
of God coming to them.
We thank Bishop Baker who always does a
great job administering the sacrament to our
young adults. We thank him for his
dedication and personal approach to each
one he will confirm.
Congratulations to Marilyn Baggott, faithful
member of the OLS parish and teacher at the
Jefferson County International Baccalaureate
High School, who is one of eighteen teachers
across the country to be honored as a
Teacher of the Year in the area of National
Math and Science Initiative’s Advanced
Placement Program. She will be given her
award at a banquet in Washington, D.C.

First Light Homeless Shelter:

and service to the First Light Homeless
Shelter for Women and Children several
