Alcatel-Lucent 7450 Ethernet Service Switch

1 0 G i g E M edia D ependent A dapter with tunable optics

The Alcatel-Lucent 10GigE Media Dependent Adapter (MDA) with tunable optics enables software selection
of wavelengths when interconnecting the Alcatel-Lucent 7450 Ethernet Service Switch (ESS) with DWDM
transport equipment. It enables the MPLS-enabled Carrier Ethernet platform to interconnect directly with DWDM
systems, eliminating the need for external optical transponder shelves and reducing the complexity of sparing
and configuration, which directly results in CapEx and OpEx savings for service providers, cable MSOs, mobile
operators, Internet service providers, application service providers, and industry and public sector (IPS) customers.
Initial configuration and implementation of configuration changes within the transport network are also greatly
simplified. When deployed in conjunction with Alcatel-Lucent metro optical transport equipment, innovative
Wavelength Tracker technology would enable end-to-end tracking of the identity and optical power of
DWDM wavelengths, with the ability to adjust and balance optical power at each point in the transport network.

Benefits

Simplifies initial configuration and

implementation of changes

Allows the 7450 ESS to be interconnected directly to existing

DWDM systems

Reduces the cost and overhead of

maintaining spares for disparate
wavelengths at each location

Eliminates the need for external

transponders, reducing cost and
complexity

Used in transport of 10GigE across

optical transport infrastructure,
reaching at least 80 km without
requiring optical signal amplification
or dispersion compensation

Provides operators with increased

flexibility and efficiency in the use
of DWDM wavelengths

For long-haul applications, EFEC

provides additional coding gain to
extend optical transport distances
up to 2000 km dependent on fiber
conditions and amplification
When used in conjunction with
Alcatel-Lucent transport equipment,
Wavelength Tracker provides a
powerful tool for streamlining endto-end monitoring and adjustment
of signal integrity across the network
