The Corporation, Sheffield

Friday 15th April 2016

I arrived at The Corporation before 8.00pm just in time to catch Canadian Metal legends
Anvil performing Metal on Metal. In Steve Lips Kudlow they possess arguably the happiest
Heavy Metal fan/musician on the planet. In hindsight, I wish that I have set off off from home
a bit earlier.
The lights dimmed and long intro came courtesy of Diamond Dave Lee Roths Just A Gigolo
that immediately had the audience reminiscing of the halcyon days of the eighties. The band,
Sven Dirkschneider (drums), Fitty Wienhold (bass), Kasperi Heikkinen (guitars) and Andret
Smirnov (guitars) hit the stage and the three guitarists were front and centre in classic Metal
formation as they launched into the Accept classic Starlight. The erstwhile singer of
German Metal band entered the stage in his usual combat gear to a huge reception from the
partisan audience. I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised with the sound that was
arguably the best that I ever heard down The Corporation and UDO has not lost any of his
trademark growl from the eighties. There were lots of smiling faces around the crowd as the
band played one Accept classic after another; they have always been one of my favourite
Metal bands as they had the ability to combine metallic riffs, classical sounds and growling
vocals but still retain a keen sense of melody. The ten minute rendition of Princess of the
Dawn from my favourite Accept album, 1982s Restless and Wild, was worth the admission
price alone. Other highlights were Neon Nights, Breaker, Restless and Wild, Son of a
Bitch and Losers and Winners, the latter being the last song of the main set. The band
returned for a four song encore, including three title tracks from Accepts eighties albums
Metal Heart (1985), Im A Rebel (1980) and Balls to the Wall (1983). UDO got the crowd
singing Heidi, heido, ha ha Heidi, heido, hei ha ha ha from the old traditional German song
Ein Heller und ein Batzen that introduced the speed metal of Fast As A Shark (a year
before Metallica released their debut album Kill em All).
The aforementioned Balls to the Wall concluded a fantastic twenty-one song set, however,
not wanting to sound greedy, I was a tad disappointed by the omission of my all-time
favourite Accept song Burning. That said it was a terrific evenings entertainment of classic
old-school Metal. Unfortunately, this will be the last opportunity to hear UDO sing these
songs but fortunately Accept themselves are still going strong.
