LOOKING BACK
Moses: The Ultimate Journey
Up Against It
Exodus 13:17-14:31
Do you feel cornered in some area of life? Backed into a corner and wondering why? Up against
it? In those challenging and sometimes painful moments and seasons, we can learn what it
means to trust God deeply or we can learn to operate and make decisions based on our own
fears.

Thinking It Through (agree/disagree/consider/contemplate)

Ive never had clarity and certitude. I only have trust. Ill pray that you trust. ~ Mother Teresa
Its not about you. The purpose of your life is far greater than your own personal fulfillment,
your peace of mind, or even your happinessIf you want to know why you were placed on this
planet, you must begin with God. ~Rick Warren
I do not seek to understand so that I can believe, but I believe so that I may understand; and
what is more, I believe that unless I do believe, I shall not understand. ~ Anselm of Canterbury
Working It Out
1. Moses followed God even when it didnt make a lot of sense. Can you describe how faith and
certainty or trust and clarity have been part of your experience in the Ultimate Journey?
2. How do the qualities of rest and stillness as well as bold and confident action demonstrate
our trust in God?
3. Nothing but the voice of God (laws of nature, reason and wisdom, inner panic) suggested to
Moses that the way out of their predicament was to divides the Red Sea and walk across. What
voices are you listening to or thoughts are you repeating that may be in conflict with what God
says about who you really are? How can you believe Him more than you believe yourself or
anything else?
LOOKING AHEAD
Moses: The Ultimate Journey
Centered
Exodus 11-12

To this very day young Jewish children are taught to ask Why is this night different from all
other nights? In one significant night marked by a poignant and eerily traumatic act of divine
judgment and redemption, the future for Moses and the people of Israel became radically

different from the past. And thus the Passover foreshadowed the life-giving power of the
Gospel.

1. Read Exodus chapters 11 and 12 and observe the details about that first Passover
event.
2. How many times are they told to remember and observe this event in the future? Why is
remembering important?
3. In what ways did that first Passover shape Moses Ultimate Journey? The Israelites
Ultimate Journey?
