Lions’ Citizen of the Year Nominations Sought
The Bradford Lions are seeking nominations for their annual Lions’ Citizen of the Year award. This
award was started in 1985 to recognize some of the citizens of Bradford who have provided exceptional
service to the Bradford community through their participation and membership in their church and com-
munity organizations. Many of these activities go unknown or unrecognized by many of our citizens as
perhaps they work in the background and do not seek recognition for their labor. Since 1985, 30 individ-
uals have been honored with this prestigious award.
We ask the community to nominate someone by completing an application prior to May 15.
Forms are available at both Bradford banks, the Bradford Public Library, and all churches.

‘White Cane Days’ in West Milton
Look for Lions at Local Businesses May 7 & 8
Members of the West Milton Lions Club will take to the streets of West Milton May 7 and 8 to raise
funds as part of the annual White Cane Days. Funds donated by community members will be used to pur-
chase eyeglasses for local residents in need. Also, donated funds will be given to Ohio Lions Eye
Research, Lions Eye Foundation, and causes for the prevention of blindness.
According to Lion President George Frank of the West Milton Lions, “Money raised on May 7 and 8
will allow Lions to meet pressing needs in our community and state. Lions members thank everyone who
contributes to this important work. You are truly helping Lions make a difference in our community.”
The West Milton Lions Club has 22 members and meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays, at 6:15
p.m., at the United Church of Christ. Lions Clubs are a group of men and women who identify needs with-

Brittany Walters is Newton High School’s Valedictorian for
the Class of 2010, with a cumulative GPA of 4.032. She is the
daughter of Ralph and Nikki Walters of Troy.
Brittany Walters Brittany’s future plans are to attend Wright State
University and obtain a Bachelor of Science degree in
VALEDICTORIAN
Electrical or Mechanical Engineering. She hopes to work at
Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
She is president of the National Honor Society and a mem-
ber of the Yearbook staff, choir, and the Newton Blue Ribbon
4-H Club.
Joshua Usserman is Salutatorian for Newton High School’s
Class of 2010. He has a cumulative GPA of 4.030. The son of
Edward and Susan Usserman of Troy, Joshua’s future plans
are to attend Edison Community College where he will study
Nursing. He hopes to specialize in Critical Care and one day

‘Vision Education Station’ Visits Milton-Union Public Library

The Realeyes Vision Education Station a free-standing kiosk that educates about eye safety and vision,
will be at the Milton-Union Public Library, 560 S. Main St., West Milton, until June 1. The Vision
Education Station includes optical illusions, hands-on activities, and fun facts about the eyes.
The Vision Education Station is one component of the Realeyes program. Realeyes also connects
classrooms with eye doctors in the community. Now celebrating its 10th year, Realeyes has been present-
ed to over 425,000 students in schools throughout Ohio. The Ohio Optometric Association created four
age-appropriate, classroom presentations that offer different lessons for each age group, ranging from Pre-
K to Grade 8. All curricula are offered at no charge to schools. Funds come from Ohio’s Save Our Sight
program. When renewing license plates, Ohioans are asked to donate $1 to the program which funds a
variety of programs that provide early detection of vision problems and the promotion of good eye health
and safety.
Almost 25 percent of school-age children have vision problems and, alarmingly, only 14 percent of
children entering school have ever had an eye examination.
The Realeyes Education Initiative was created to educate children and their parents that vision care is
important for a child’s success. A vision problem that could easily be corrected can be devastating if left
undetected, with effects that last a lifetime.
