BENEFITS OF GRADE 700/900
The immediate benefits of grade 700 tie rods compared to lower grades are a smaller tonnage of
steel resulting in lower overall material, transportation costs and an easier / safer handling at site.
Considering a grade 700/900 assembly as compared to grade 500/660 tie rods, the savings on bars
(excluding accessories and connectors) would be:

ROLLED THREAD PROFILE & BENEFITS

Thread rolling process redistributes the excess material outwards in a compact granular formation
giving it maximum efficiency over the active stress area. There is no removal of steel material
during this process, contrary to a cut thread.
The dies compress the material to form the root of the thread and force the displaced material
outward to form the crests.
The result is a minimal loss of cross-sectional area at the bottom of the thread, and cold working of
the displaced material.

Fibers are not broken but enhanced in

the tip section (major diameter) and
root section (minor diameter), thus
improving the resistance to fatigue in
case of a rolled thread.
Moreover, this process does not
involve any heating of the bar which
could alter its chemical properties.

BARS
STANDARD BAR LENGTHS
Dextra tie rods being usually shipped in standard 20ft or 40ft containers
to the project location, the maximum individual length for bars is 5.8
meters or 11.8 meters respectively.
Special lengths are available upon project requirements.

CORROSION PROTECTION / SURFACE FINISH

Dextra tie rods can be delivered without any specific surface finish when considering sacrificial
thickness as specified in EN 1993 Part 5.
However other alternatives are available to enhance corrosion protection, such as bituminous
tape, paint or hot dip galvanization, depending on the project design and requirements.
When bituminous tape is required, it can either be wrapped at Dextras factory or delivered
separately with the tie rods, depending on projects requirements:

For paint protection, a single coat of epoxy paint is applied as Dextras factory as per EN 1993.
Hot-dip galvanization is performed as per EN ISO 1461:1999 or ASTM A123. In accordance with
common practice and industry recommendations, internal threads of components are not
galvanized and external bar threads are brushed after galvanizing.

CONNECTIONS COUPLERS

Couplers are used to connect individual bars together, and provide no length adjustment.
Dextra couplers are designed to ensure the full strength of the connection up to the load capacity
of the bar, therefore using several couplers in a tie rods assembly does not reduce the overall
strength of the assembly.

37

COMPONENTS
CONNECTIONS COUPLERS
TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
Couplers are available to accommodate bar grades 355/510, 500/660, 700/900.
Standard couplers are used with an extended thread on one of the bars, which allows full engagement
of the coupler.
The connection with coupler is achieved by placing the bars butt to butt and simply rotating the coupler.
It is therefore not required to turn the bar.

CONNECTIONS TURNBUCKLES

Turnbuckles are right hand-left hand threads connectors. The main purpose is to adjust the length
of the total tie rod assembly by up to +/- 50mm.
Turnbuckles can be installed anywhere on the tie rod: either close to the waling beams, sheet piles,
tubular piles and any anchor walls, or at mid distance from the walls.
Turnbuckles are marked with a grove on one side in order to identify the thread direction and make
the installation easier. The left-hand thread side of the turnbuckle has a grove, whereas the righthand thread side does not.

WALING BEAMS
WALING BOLTS

Waling bolts are designed to provide a connection between the sheet pile wall and the waling beam.
They are generally required when the waling beams are located on the inner side of the anchoring
wall.
Waling bolts are available in dimension from M16 and in various grades of steel depending on the
project configuration.

53

WALING BEAMS
SPLICING PLATES

Splicing plates are used to connect waling beams together in order to provide a continuity along the
total length of the sheet pile wall.
Splicing plates are available as per BS EN 10025.

TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS
The length and spacing of bolts depends on
waling beams design and working loads.
Bolts are supplied toBS 4190 or ISO 898-2.

54

DESIGN
Dextra pays great attention to the manufacture of its bars and accessories. Its dedicated design
team is involved in the calculations and designs of all components, and all products are tested in
Dextras own accredited testing laboratory.
The design calculations follow the most commonly used codes such as:
- ANSI/AISC 360-05
- EN1993
- AS 4100.

Example of geometry modeling to simulate the working stress distribution

55

QUALITY ASSURANCE
Dextras quality management system complies with the requirements of:
ISO 9001
ASME NCA-3800
Dextra manufacturing facilities and quality management system are regularly audited by the
following third-party certification bodies:
Bureau Veritas: Certificate number TH 08006540.
American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME): Certificate number QSC-706.

Dextra Manufacturings goal is to ensure code compliance and customer satisfaction in

accordance with the project needs and specified requirements.

56

QUALITY CONTROL
Dextra is providing each customer with a Standard Inspection and Testing Plan (SITP) containing all
the details about the product inspection, the testing equipment, the products control of nonconformance, the control of materials storage, the handling/packing activities, the control of the

PACKING
TIE RODS PACKING
Dextra pays particular attention to the packing and labeling of all its bars to ensure safe delivery of
the products. The process includes the individual protective packing of the tie rod and various
solutions such as steel racks, boxes or tailor made packing structures.
Each bar is individually labeled in order to provide easy identification, tracking and to facilitate the
installation on site.
All bars are safely stacked into steel racks to protect them during sea shipment.

COMPONENTS PACKING
Similarly, components are packed and labeled, and can be shipped in wooden boxes, crates,
wrapped on pallets or secured on specific packing structures.

WALING BEAMS PACKING

In order to avoid waling beams movements in the container during sea shipment, inflatable bags are
used to hold the beams in place.

59

LABELING
DETAIL OF DEXTRA LABELS
Dextra supplies every bar, part & accessory labeled with an identity tag as shown on the below
picture.
The identity tag is meant to identify the product, trace it, and link it to the assembly drawings.
Each tag comprises the following elements:
Code : specified Dextra drawing number.
Bar : specified thread diameter.
Thread length : specified thread size on Left side & Right side.
Cutting length : specified total length of steel bar.
Quantity: number of elements composing the assembly.
Identity number in drawing (number at the lower right corner): specified balloon number in
