1. Cleanthe viscometerusingsuitablesolvents,and dry by passingclean,dry, filteredair
through the instrumentto removethe final tracesof solvents. Periodically, tracesof
organicdepositsshouldbe removedwith chromicacid or non-chromiumcleaning
solution.
2. If thereis a possibilityof lint, dust,or othersolid materialin the liquid sample, filter the
samplethrougha fritted glassfilter or fine meshscreen.

To chargethe sampleinto the viscometer, invert the instrumentand apply suctionto tube

L, immersingfube N in the liquid sample, and draw liquid to mark G. Wipe cleanarm N,
and tum the instrumentto its normal vertical position.

4.

Placethe viscometerinto the holder, and insertit into the constanttemperaturebath. A

Routineviscometerand the Cannonviscometerholderwhich fits the Cannon-Fenske
Manning Semi-Microviscometerwill also fit the Cannon-FenskeOpaqueviscometer.
Align the viscometervertically in the bath by meansof a small plumb bob in tube L, if a
self-aligningholderhasnot beenused.

5 . Allow sampleto flow throughcapillary tube R and approximatelyhalf-fillbulb A,

stoppingthe meniscusin bulb B by placing rubber stopperin tube N.

Allow approximatelyl0 minutesfor the sampleto come to bath temperatureat 40"C and
15 minutesat 100oC. Make surethe meniscusin bulb B doesnot reachline E.

7 . Removethe rubberstopperand allow the meniscusto travel upwardsinto bulbs C and D.

Using two clocks, measurethe efflux times for the meniscusto passfrom mark E to mark
F, and from mark F to mark I.

8 . Calculatethe kinematicviscosityof the sampleby multiplying the efflux time in seconds

for eachbulb by the viscometerconstantfor eachbulb.

Repeatmeasurementcan be madeby repeatingstepsI thru 8.

The viscometerconstantat othertemperaturescan be obtainedby interpolationor extrapolation. To obtain kinematic viscos

mmt/s (cSt) multiply the efflux time in secondsby the viscometerconstant. To obtain viscosityin mPa.s(cP), multiply the l
viscosity in mm2/s(cSt) by the densityin gramsper milliliter.
The aboveconstantsassumea value for the coefficientof thermalexpansiontypical to that for mineral oil, and that the visco
was filled with test sampleat room temperature. If the filling temperatureTe is substantiallydifferentthan room temperaturt
viscometerconstantat testtemperahueT1 is C" (l + B [Tt - Tr]). The valuesof Coand B shown below arebasedon a coeff
thermalexpansiontypical t0 that for a mineral oil.
Kinematic viscositiesof the standardsused in calibratingwere establishedin MasterViscometersas describedin Ind. Eng. C
Anal. Ed. 16,708(1944),ASTM D2162, and the Joumal of Researchof the National Bureauof Standards,Vol. 52, No. 3, Mi
ResearchPaper2479. Kinematicviscositiesare basedon the primary viscositystandard, water, at20"C (ITS-90). The inten
acceptedvalue for the viscosityof waterat 20oC(ITS-90)is 1.0016mPa.sor kinematicviscosityis 1.0034mm2/sas listedir

0.1% in the United States. To make this small correctionin the viscometerconstant, multiply the aboveviscometerconstant
factor [g (at your laboratory)/ 980.1]. The calibrationdatabelow are traceableto the National Institutefor Standardsand Te
