Instructional Procedures:

Day 1:
First 5 minutes: The teacher will describe each board game that is in front of the children. The
group of 6 children will be separated in half. One group playing candy land and the other group
playing chutes and ladders.
10-15 minutes: Watch the children as each group plays together. Making sure they are following
the rules and taking turns. Answer any questions they have about the game.
Day 2:
First 5 Minutes: Explain to the children that the small 3 person groups will now be switching
games. If you played candy land yesterday, today you will be playing chutes and ladders. Give a
brief explanation of the games again before they begin.
10-15 minutes: Watch the children as each group plays together. Making sure they are following
the rules and taking turns. Answer any questions they have about the game.
Day 3:
First 10 minutes: As a group, discuss the differences between the two games and write them on
chart paper. Discuss their favorite parts of each game and separate them from the parts they
dislike also on the chart paper.
Last 5 minutes: Let children brain storm on their own the different rules and cards they would
use in their own game to discuss tomorrow.
Day 4:
First 5 minutes: Go over the chart paper from each group from the day before. The give each
child a chance to talk about the rules/cards/game boards that they would like in their own board
game
Last 10 minutes: Begin drawing out the board game the group would like based off of each
childs idea. Then begin making the cards/spinner that would go along with the game. Then write
your groups game rules on the back of the board game.
Day 5:
First 5 minutes: Briefly discuss how the groups game will work. Remind them of the different
rules they made up for the game.
Last 10 minutes: Play the game all together as a group and then go over the parts that worked
and didnt work of their own board game.

We used this website in class outside of group time to get some ideas of different game rules we
could use!
Differentiated Instructional Support:
Discuss additional activities you could do to meet the needs of students who might be struggling
with the material:
-

Instead of working in groups on two board games, the teacher could work with the entire
group on one game. Making sure each child knows how to play and the rules before trying
to create their own game.

Vocabulary: Board game, counters, spinner.

For teachers

Before each lesson, you will need to use the smartboard as an introduction to
team work and games. Find an online game that you could play as a class to get
them involved. This will help them understand more when it comes to the actual
lesson time.

For students

The children could use the website listed above to take home and go over
different rules of games with their parents.
