1. (a) A Mild Steel tube 42 mm outside diameter is turned on a lathe. The following
data was observed. Rake angle 320 , cutting speed 18m/min, feed 0.12 mm/rev,
length of chip 52mm, cutting force 180 kg, feed force 60kg. Calculate chip
thickness ratio, chip thickness, shear plane angle, chip velocity and coefficient
of friction and power.
(b) When turning a 400 mm diameter on a lathe, the force exerted on the tool
was found to be 50 N. If the machine is running at a speed of 300 rpm find
the work alone per min. [8+8]
2. (a) Explain with schematic diagram the principle of thread cutting on a lathe.
(b) Find out the relation between ratio of change gears to the work pitch and lead
screw pitch. The pitch of lead screw is 6mm and the pitch of the thread to be
cut is 1.5mm. Find the change gears. [8+8]
