The excitement here today was the total eclipse of the sun [7-11-91]. It was cloudy most of the
day but just as the eclipse took place, the clouds broke and we were able to see it clearly. For
about two minutes it was completely dark at 2:00 in the aftemoon. We could see the stars, the
street lights all came on,and it was just like night. We could see the corona around the sun and
red sun flares clearly. They looked like flames around the edge of a black sun. Within about ten
seconds of a tiny edge of the sun peeking around the moon,it was quickly light again. We
bought special filters and were able to watch the moon move across the sun. We also used the
filters with our video camera to film an event that will not happen here for another 600 years,
although there will be eclipses in other parts of the world.

We are getting anxious to get to Chile. I will fmish with language school and we fly to Miami,
Florida on August 21 where we will be making fmal preparations to fly to Chile on September 2.
There are lots of adjustments ahead for us. Do pray that we will be able to fmd appropriate
housing. Another pressing need will be to purchase a car. We will need at least $7000; at this
point we have only about $550 set aside for this purpose. It is exciting to see how God is going
to provide for this need. Also,as we arrive in Chile our monthly living expenses are going to
increase. We are going to need to have an increase in regular giving. If you or your church have
been considering being part of our support team, now is the time we really need your support.
We stepped out in faith to come to language school and we are thankful that our needs have been
met here. We are confident that our increased needs will be met as we arrive in Chile.

United Crusades

Visitors:

We are enjoying the work of short-term missionaries from Christ's Church of the Valley, West
Covina, CA (16); First Christian Church, Napa,CA (7); South Valley Christian Church,San Jose,
CA (8); and Overlake Christian Church, Kirkland, WA (2). Add to this the 30-member group of
Continental Singers from Puerto Rico who will be with us 3 days and you can see we are busy. A
total of63 short-term workers.

Ther first group arrived June 25 and the last group to return to the USA will fly out the end of
August, followed by the visit of the Tomfordes from Boca Raton, Florida and the arrival of the
Gibsons from Costa Rica.

Each and every one of the short-term missionaries is making a special contribution. Let me just
mention a few:

- Dr.& Mrs. Sam Earp: master's level class and consultations on Biblical dynamics of congrega
tional growth.
- Mr.& Mrs. John Patteison: master's level class and several seminars on family enrichment,
plus extensive counseling.
- Mr.& Mrs. Gilvert Hill: basketball clinics and missionary candidate consultation.
