Calculations and Compounding
Syllabus/First Day Handout
Course Description: This course will introduce the student to the knowledge
and skills of fundamental mathematical calculations utilized in pharmacy practice
and the practice of pharmacy compounding.
The 1 hour lecture each week focuses on calculations. The 3 hours laboratory
integrates these calculations into the science and practice of pharmaceutical
compounding. Topics include: systems of measurement, medication dispensing
calculations, pharmacy mathematical procedures, and calculation tools and
techniques in addition to the practical compounding lab.

Stoklosa but other editions are also satisfactory. An
electronic copy of the textbook is saved on CANVAS

Calculation Exam:
1.5 hour exam
a) 10 calculation questions x 8 points per question
b) 5 questions from prelab assignment x 4 points per question

Homework is not mandatory. But, we strongly suggest you to work on those
questions.

1) To pass this class, you score a minimum of 70 points (70%) on all 3 exams.
The grade assignment will follow the matrix below,
A: 100-93; A-: 92-90
B+: 89-87; B: 86-83; B-: 82-80
C+: 79-77; C: 76-73; C-: 72-70
D+: 69-67; D: 66-63; D-: 62-60
If you score below 70 point in any one calculation exam, you will have to take
a challenge exam at the end of the semester.
2) The challenge exam will be comprehensive.
2.1 You must score a minimum of 70 points out of 100 to pass the
challenge exam. Your final grade will be calculated using your original 3
scores in the calculation exam and follow the matrix listed in the section
above.
2.2 If you fail the challenge exam, you fail this class.
