CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Background of the Study


Look at the developing science and technology, language has an important rule
for human life, by using language the people will express their ideas, emotion, and desires,
and it is used as a medium to interact with one another, to fulfil their daily need. English has
been the most important language in international communication. The people all over the
world speak the language when they meet one another in every international meeting,
workshop, or conference. All countries in the world have set the language as one of the
compulsory subject studied at school.but if the people do not have many vocabularies they
can not express their ideas, emotion and desire.
Speaking and vocabulary is important things for them to practice their capability and
their understanding, how to send idea, and how to spell word well.As Hindmarsh R (1980)
stated that vocabulary is a core component of language proficiency and provides much of
basis for how well learners speak, listen, read and write.
To make the students have strong interest in teaching and learning process especially
in learning speaking and vocabulary, the teacher should take the best approach, method, and
strategies. Then, the teacher can use media in teaching of English language, method are used
to help the students for speaking to make interaction between the teacher and students, the
writer use drilling method in teaching learning processes.
Abdul Rahman Shaleh ( 2006: 203) states that Characteristic of using methods is a
form of repetition Activity many - times The order of stimulus and response association be
very strong and not easy for Forgettable thus forming skills ( Knowledge ) That Ready for
used Concerned ".
Indonesia as one of the developing countries has also set its educational curriculum
to include English as a foreign language which is studied from junior high school up to the
university level. Being successful students are not easy, this fact can be seen mostly at
accounting class of SMK PGRI 2 NGANJUK, although they have been studying English for
more than a year, but they are still unable to use English in interacting with their teacher in the
classroom.

Based on the background of the study above, this study is limited to find out the
developing studdents speaking and vocabulary skill using drilling method or technique at
Accounting class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk in the academic year of 2015/2016.

B. Statements of the Problem


Based on the background above, the writer can be formulated the problem as follows :
1. How is the teaching learning process of the speaking and vocabulary by using drilling
method at Accounting class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk ?
2. Can the drilling method increase the students speaking and vocabulary at the
Accounting Class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk?
3. How is the students progress after learning English speaking and vocabulary by using
drilling method at the Accounting Class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk?
C. Propose of the Study
1. To describe the teaching learning process of the speaking and vocabulary by using
drilling method at Accounting class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk
2. To find out whether the drilling method increase the students speaking and vocabulary
at the Accounting Class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk
3. To analyze the students progress after learning English speaking and vocabulary by
using drilling method at the Accounting Class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk
D. Significances of the Study
The use of this research is to know how the technique can overcome the problem
faced by the students and an English teacher in developing students speaking and vocabulary
skill. In this research has significance of the study which is devided into theoretical and
practical
1. Theoritical Significances
a. Teacher
This technique can be used by the teacher to develop their teaching technique.
Hopefully, it can give inspiration to the teacher to make some variation in teaching
English, so the students wouldnt feel bored with the lesson.

b. Students
It is hoped to make the students of accounting class of SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk in
academic year 2015/2016 be more interest and give more attention in learning English.
They should get the new experience about learning english. And they shouldnt feel bored
in learning english.
2. Practical Significances
a. Teacher
The english teachers can use drilling technique in teaching english to develop the
studentsspeaking and vocabulary skill. The teacher is able to use the video by sending
the material of the lesson to the students. Hopefully makes the students be more interest
with

the

teacher

and

easy

to

catch

the

materials.

b. Students
the finding of this study would help students in understanding more the material given
by the teacher. This finding also hoped can develop students motivation and confidence,
creating new habit and new atmosphere which will develop their achievement too.
E. Scope and Limitation of the Study
This research is only limited on the use of Drilling Technique in developing students
speaking and vocabulary skill at Accounting class in SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk in the academic
year of 2015/2016 with the material about describing something or someone.
F. Definition of Key Terms
In order to avoid the misunderstanding of this research to the
readers, the definition of key terms is used to make it clear in comprehending this
study, such as: developing Speaking and vocabulary skill, Drilling Technique and SMK PGRI
2 Nganjuk.
1. Developing Speaking and Vocabulary skill
Speaking and vocabulary are two relationships that can not be separated each other
,its the activities by which human beings try to express thought, feeling, opinion and to
exchange information by using utterances in the form of communication. And speaking and
vocabulary skill are the ability to produce words, to express, to state, and to deliver thought,

ideas and feeling. Speaking and vocabulary are a tool of communication that is why it is
necessary for people to develop their speaking and vocabulary skill in order to have a good
communication with others.
2. Drilling technique
In the book Nana Sudjana (1991 : 86 ) , drill method is one activity do the same thing , over
and over again in earnest with the aim of to enhance a skill to be permanent . A distinctive
feature of this method is a form of repetition activities many times from the same thing .
drilling technique gives students understanding by repetition.The teacher guide the students to
follow what the teacher say. Even though only drilling the students its good for them to
memorize the word step by step.
3.SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk
SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk is the level of senior high school which is located in
Abdul rahman saleh street, Nganjuk regency, East Java. SMK PGRI 2 Nganjuk is the
Favourite private school in Nganjuk and becomes the place where the research will be
conducted.
