The exclamation point within an equilateral triangle is

intended to alert the user to the presence of important
operating and maintenance (servicing) instructions in the
literature accompanying the unit.
1. Read Instructions - All the safety and operating
instructions should be read before the video product is
operated.
2. Retain Instructions - All the safety and operating
instructions should be retained for future reference.
3. Heed Warnings - All warnings on the video product
and in the operating instructions should be adhered to.
4. Follow Instructions - All operating and use
instructions should be followed.
5. Cleaning - Step a applies to equipment that can be
disconnected from the CCTV system without seriously
jeopardizing security. Step b applies to equipment that
must operate continuously such as video switching
equipment at military installations.
a. Disconnect this video product from its power source
before cleaning. Do not use caustic, abrasive, or
aerosol cleaners. Use a damp cloth for cleaning.
b. Use a damp cloth to clean the equipment. Do not
allow moisture or liquids to enter any vents. Do not
use caustic, abrasive, or aerosol cleaners.
6. Attachments - Do not use attachments not
recommended by Vicon as they may cause hazards.
7. Water and Moisture - Do not use this video product in
any location where it may be exposed to water or
moisture. This does not apply to outdoor camera
housings, outdoor pan-and-tilt drives, and other
equipment designed for direct exposure to outdoor
environments.
8. Accessories - Do not place this video product on any
unstable surface or table. The video product may fall,
causing serious injury to a person and serious damage to
the video product. Use only with a mounting accessory
recommended by Vicon, or sold with the video product.
Any mounting of the video product should follow Vicons
instructions, and a mounting accessory recommended by
Vicon should be used.

9. Ventilation - Slots and openings in the cabinet are

provided for ventilation and to ensure reliable operation of
the video product and to protect it from overheating, and
these openings must not be blocked or covered. The
openings should never be blocked by placing the video
product on a rug or other similar surface. This video
product should never be placed near or over a radiator or
heat register. This video product should not be placed in a
built-in installation such as a bookcase or rack unless
proper ventilation is provided or Vicons instructions have
been adhered to.
10. Power Sources - This video product should be
operated only from the type of power source indicated on
the marking label. If you are not sure of the type of power
supplied to your installation site, consult your Vicon dealer
or local power company. For video products intended to
operate from battery power, or other sources, refer to the
operating instructions.
11. Grounding - This applies to video products equipped
with a 3-wire grounding-type plug, a plug having a third
(grounding) pin. This plug only fits into a grounding-type
power outlet. This is a safety feature. If you are unable to
insert the plug into the outlet, contact your electrician to
replace your obsolete outlet. Do not defeat the safety
purpose of the grounding-type plug.
12. Power-Cord Protection - Power supply cords should
be routed so that they are not likely to be walked on or
pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying
particular attention to cords at plugs, convenience
receptacles, and the point where they exit from the video
product.
13. Outdoor Cable Grounding - If an outside cable
system is connected to the video product, be sure the
cable system is grounded so as to provide some
protection against voltage surges and built-up static
charges. Section 810 of the National Electrical Code,
ANSI/NFPA 70-1984, provides information with respect to
proper grounding of the lead-in wire to an antenna
discharge unit, size of grounding conductors, location of
antenna-discharge unit, connection to grounding
electrodes, and requirements for the grounding electrode.
14. Lightning - For added protection for this video
product when it is not used for long periods of time,
disconnect it from its power source and from the cable
system. This prevents damage to the video product due to
lightning and power-line surges.
15. Power Lines - An outside cable system should not be
located in the vicinity of overhead power lines or other
electric light or power circuits, or where it can fall into such
power lines or circuits. When installing an outside cable
system, extreme care should be taken to keep from
touching such power lines or circuits as contact with them
might be fatal.

16. Overloading - Do not overload wall outlets and

extension cords as this can result in a risk of fire or
electric shock.
17. Object and Liquid Entry - Never push objects of any
kind into this video product through openings as they may
touch dangerous voltage points or short out parts that
could result in a fire or electric shock. Never spill liquid of
any kind on the video product.
18. Servicing - Do not attempt to service this video
product yourself as opening or removing covers may
expose you to dangerous voltage or other hazards. Refer
all servicing to qualified service personnel.
19. Damage Requiring Service - Disconnect this video
product from its power source and refer servicing to
qualified service personnel under the following conditions.
Note that step c does not apply to outdoor camera
housings, outdoor pan-and-tilt drives and other equipment
specifically designed for direct exposure to outdoor
environments.
a. When the power-supply cord or plug is damaged.
b. If liquid has been spilled, or objects have fallen into
the video product.

c.

If the video product has been exposed to rain or

water.
d. If the video product does not operate normally by
following the operating instructions. Adjust only those
controls that are covered by the operating
instructions, as an improper adjustment of other
controls may result in damage and will often require
extensive work by a qualified technician to restore the
video product to its normal operation.
e. If the video product has been dropped or the cabinet
has been damaged.
f. When the video product exhibits a distinct change in
performance - this indicates a need for service.
20. Replacement Parts - When replacement parts are
required, be sure the service technician has used
replacement parts specified by Vicon or that have the
same characteristics as the original part. Unauthorized
substitutions may result in fire, electric shock, or other
hazards.
21. Safety Check - Upon completion of any service or
repairs to this video product, ask the service technician to
perform safety checks to determine that the video product
is in proper operating condition.

Alarm Messages
Using a serial printer, alarm messages may be displayed on your PC monitor using HyperTerminal or other
communications program. Define serial port COM 1 as Printer as discussed in Serial Ports (COM 1 is RS232 by default). The format for alarm messages is:
Alarm: (type) (camera number) (action) (date) (time with AM/PM indicator)
where the types may be video loss, motion detection, receiver alarm, alarm device connected to the 37-pin
alarm interface connector or communication failure. The actions are automatic acknowledgment, alarm on,
alarm off and manual acknowledge. Note that receiver and communication failure alarms always latch, so that
there is never an alarm off action shown for these two types of alarms.
For example:
Alarm:Vloss 1 ALARM ON 06/15/00 06:07:57 PM
indicates that video loss occurred at 6:07 PM on 6/15/00 on camera 1, which initiated an alarm. A
communication failure alarm message might display as:
Alarm:CommF 1 ALARM ON 06/15/00 06:08:01 PM
A receiver alarm message example is shown below:
Alarm:Rcvr 1 Auto Ack 06/15/00 06:08:08 PM
where the message indicates that the action was set to automatically acknowledge the receiver alarm.

Selecting a Monitor
There are three monitors for the AurorA2000 system, the spot monitor and two main display monitors. The
spot monitor is used as a monitoring station and does not have the capability of multi-picture display. Use the
main display monitors to take advantage of all AurorA2000 features.

Note: Motion detection parameters may be customized for each camera.

Detection Threshold: The detection threshold defines the change in video level required before motion is
detected. The settings are 1 to 9. At a setting of 9, a dramatic change in video level is required to trigger
motion detection. The most sensitive setting is 1. Each camera has its own detection threshold, so that
cameras in high security areas may be set to detect movement by more stringent guidelines than cameras in
less important viewing areas.
Minimum Active Zones: This field defines the minimum number of zones (each video window is divided into
zones) which must be active before motion is detected. For example, if the minimum number of active zones
is set to 14, then 14 zones must pass the detection threshold before the AurorA2000 has detected motion.
From the Camera Motion Screen (select Camera Motion Setup from the screen shown above), define the
zone setup as follows.

This screen is used to turn on (enable) or turn off (disable) motion detection in
each of the zones in a cameras field of view. For example, it would be practical to
disable the motion detection zones corresponding to trees blowing outside a
window, a fan on the wall or a TV screen.
The first step in setting the zones is to direct the camera to its normal position.
Viewing the scene on the monitor, decide which zones should be enabled or

Use this setting to define a relative update rate for each camera in your
system (this applies to the main display monitors only). This allows you to
define that the video from more important cameras may be updated faster
than the video from less important locations. If all of your cameras update
priorities are set to Normal, the update rates for each camera will be equal.
Normal - updates video relatively slower; use for less
important viewing areas.
High - updates video more quickly and should be used for
critical locations.

Note: You may also define the update rate for each camera during motion detection, as described on the
previous page. Both camera priority and motion processing settings can lead to a higher update rate
for a camera on the main display monitors. If camera priority is set to High, that camera will ALWAYS
have a higher update rate. If motion processing for a camera is set to Higher Update, that camera will
have a higher update rate only while motion is being detected.

Each of the 16 alarm contacts may be defined as an input or an output.

For the alarms that you will use as inputs, use the screen to the left to
designate them as momentary or latching type alarms. This does not
apply to alarm outputs.
To locate this screen, select Momentary/Latch Contacts from the Alarm
Contacts screen (select Main Menu, Alarm Setup, Alarm Inputs, and then
Alarm Contacts).

What do you want to happen when an alarm occurs?

You may customize your system to perform certain actions when one of the alarm conditions (motion, video
loss, receiver alarm, alarm device or communication failure) activates an alarm.

The AurorA2000 can be set to automatically acknowledge receiver, alarm device,

communication and video loss alarms after a specified period of time. Automatic
acknowledgment of alarms on each camera may be set individually (for a different
wait time or disabled). The automatic acknowledgment applies to all four types of
alarm sources. You cannot define individual automatic acknowledgment times for
the four alarm types.
Note that alarms activated by motion detection will automatically be removed 10
seconds after motion has ceased, regardless of the settings on this screen.

VCR TEST DATA

Refer to the discussion below for VCR Test Data. If you intend to use the VCR
to control timing (switching from one camera to the next) and have made the
connection to the VCR Clock In signal (refer to Installation), set Use VCR
Clock Pulse to Yes. This will remove the fields on lines 3-6 from the screen to
the left.
If you will use the AurorA2000 to control timing, then set the Use VCR Clock
Pulse to No. You must then define fields on lines 3-6 of the screen to the left.
Select the VCR model and then define the VCR data in the screen to the left.
Define the number of modes and then, for each mode, select the nominal
number of hours of video that a T-120 (two-hour) VCR tape can hold. Then
select the delay, which is the number of fields that will be recorded from one
video source before switching to the next video source.
The normal mode is the typical non-alarm recording mode. You may want to
set a different mode for alarm situations. For both normal and alarm modes,
use the same mode at the VCR and the AurorA2000.
Note: Choose a real-time (continuous) mode for the alarm mode.

As discussed in the Operation chapter, cameras to be recorded are defined in

the Record List Selection screen. The screen to the left allows you to specify
situations during which cameras will be recorded regardless of whether you
have listed them in the Record List Selection screen or not. The fields are
Alarm, which refers to cameras with active alarms (excluding video loss
alarms), Motion, which refers to cameras with motion detected, or High
Priority, which refers to cameras whose update priority is set to High on the
Camera Update Priorities screen. For Alarms and Motion, you may select
More Often, which records the cameras more frequently than usual, or Only,
which records only the cameras experiencing motion or alarms. The High
Priority field may be set to More Often. All three fields may be disabled using
No Change.

Setting Playback Parameters

The Record/Playback Setup Menus, available from the Main Menu, allow you to determine how your VCR will
encode and decode video from your CCTV cameras.
For the Format field, choose the unit
used to record tapes. This allows the
AurorA2000 system to play back the
tape, regardless of what multiplexer
was used to record the tape. For
example, if you wish to play back a
tape recorded on an AurorA99
multiplexer, choose AurorA99.

BNC connector (composite video). Only
one VCR IN connector may be used.
Choose S-VID if the DIN VCR IN
connector was used. Choose BNC if the
BNC VCR IN connector is used.

Available from the System Setup screen, the Schedule menus allow you to define
when actions will occur: alarm contacts and receiver alarms may be enabled, motion

For example, to define schedule 1 to run on Monday at 2:15 a.m., with all receiver alarms enabled, alarm
contacts disabled, motion processing set to Higher Update for cameras 1-4 and video from cameras 1-4 to
be recorded, you would first select Schedule 1 Setup from the Schedule Setup screen. Then you would use
key 3 to define M for Monday in the One-Time Days field, 2 for Hour and 15 for Minutes. On the
Sched 1 Record List, enable cameras 1-4 and disable the rest. On the Sched 1 Alarm Contacts screen, you
would disable all contacts. On the Sched 1 Rcvr Alarms screen, you would enable all alarms. To define
motion processing, you would set cameras 1-4 to Higher Update. This schedule would initiate all of these
actions each Monday at 2:15 a.m. These actions would overwrite any motion processing, receiver alarm,
alarm contact and record list settings, which can easily be redefined as discussed in other sections of this

Duplex Option Board Installation

Warning: Do not connect the unit to a power source until installation is complete. Take all necessary
precautions to prevent static discharge during installation.
The A2K-DUP-PCB Duplex Option Board allows you to upgrade your simplex AurorA2000 to a duplex
AurorA2000. With a duplex AurorA2000, you can record and play back or view live video simultaneously.
Perform the following instructions to install the duplex board into the multiplexer.
1. Apply power to the AurorA2000. Select About AurorA2000 from the Menu Selection screen and verify that
the PCI Slot fields are as expected. These fields tell you if there are empty slots available for the board.
2. Disconnect the power from the AurorA2000 and remove the cover panel.
3. Referring to the figure below, move the jumpers to pins 1 and 2 for JP2, JP3, JP5, JP6 and JP10 on the
AurorA2000 main board. Pin 1 is labeled on the main board.
4. If there is not an option board already attached to J9 (see figure), perform these steps:
a.

Remove the 2 rightmost main board screws (see figure) and set aside for later use.

b.

Install the two standoffs in the threaded holes from which the main board screws were removed.

c.

Skip step 5 and proceed with step 6. Note that you will have an adapter board labeled Vicon
A2K Adapter Board Left that you will not need.

5. If there is an option board already attached to J9 (see figure), then you are upgrading from a Simplex60
unit to Duplex60. The option board that you will see attached to J9 is an added channel option, which
must be moved to a new location so that the duplex board can be attached to J9. Perform these steps:
a.

Unplug the added channel board from P4 on the AurorA2000 main board (see figure).

b.

Detach the added channel board from its adapter board (Vicon A2K Adapter Board Right).

c.

Attach the added channel board to the adapter board labeled Vicon A2K Adapter Board Left.

d.

Remove the 2 leftmost main board screws (see figure) and set aside for later use.

e.

Install the two standoffs in the threaded holes from which the main board screws were removed.

f.

Insert the added channel board/adapter assembly into J4 on the AurorA2000 main board.

g.

Attach the added channel board ribbon cable to P3 on the AurorA2000 main board (see figure).

h.

Secure the adapter assembly to the standoffs with the screws that were previously removed.
Note that if the screws were lost, additional 4-40x screws are included in the kit.

i.

Proceed with the remaining steps.

6. Remove the duplex option board from the protective bag and insert it into the adapter board labeled
Vicon A2K Adapter Board Right.

Added Channel Option Board Installation

Warning: Do not connect the unit to a power source until installation is complete. To guard against
damage to the board and additional chip, do not remove them from their electrostatic discharge
protective bags until directed to do so.
The A2K-VID-PCD Added Channel Option Board allows you to update the live video refresh rate of your
AurorA2000 multiplexer. You may add up to two option boards to your multiplexer. Adding one channel board
will update your multiplexer to a Simplex60 unit. Two added channel boards will increase the refresh rate
from 30 images/second to 90 images/second (Simplex90). One added channel option board and a duplex
option board will update your multiplexer to duplex unit with a refresh rate of 60 images/second (Duplex60).
Note: The added channel option board requires 801 firmware version 2.0.0 or later. This information can be
found in the About AurorA2000 menu item found on the Main Menu. If the AurorA2000 801 firmware is
not version 2.0.0 or later, you may download the latest version from the Vicon web site at
www.vicon-cctv.com.
1. Apply power to the AurorA2000. Select About AurorA2000 from the Menu Selection screen and verify that
the PCI Slot fields are as expected. These fields tell you if there are empty slots available for adding one
or more option boards.
2. Disconnect the power from the AurorA2000 and remove the top cover screws.
3. Referring to the figure, locate chip U34. Note that if there is already an option board attached to J9, then
you must remove this board to locate U34. Use a chip extractor tool to carefully remove the old chip and
replace it with the new one, noting the orientation of the notch as shown on the figure. If applicable,
replace the option board and reconnect it to J9.
4. If you are adding two option boards to your AurorA2000, remove the 4 main board screws (see figure)
and set aside. If you will only install one option board, remove the two rightmost main board screws only.
5. Install the 1-inch standoffs in the threaded holes from which the main board screws were removed.
6. Insert the option board(s) into the appropriate PCI adapter boards to create option board/adapter board
assembly. The adapter boards are labeled Right and Left. Use the table below to determine whether you
should use the right, left or both adapter boards. Note that you may have been supplied with more

AurorANet
Note: This feature is only available with AurorA2000 software 2.0.0 and later. Visit the Vicon web site for the
latest software.
What is AurorANet?
AurorANet is an RS-485 network of AurorA2000 multiplexers. One AurorA2000 is designated as the system
bus controller. The system bus controller will poll the other AurorA2000s in the AurorANet system of
multiplexers. Regardless of which AurorA2000 is the system bus controller, any AurorA2000 may control any
other AurorA2000 in the system using AurorANet.
How do I get started?
Connect your AurorA2000s on a 2-wire RS-485 daisy-chain as discussed in the Installation chapter. Make
sure your AurorANet termination box is connected correctly. Resistors in the termination box should be
removed if the AurorA2000 is not the last device in the RS-485 connection line. Resistors should be left as is
for the last (end-of-line) device. Note that the Reference chapter includes information on setting jumpers
inside the AurorA2000 as an alternative method to using the AurorANet termination box. To make the
appropriate menu selections for AurorANet, perform the following procedure.
1. Choose AurorANet for the Mode, RS-485 as the Type and 9600 as the Baud Rate on the Serial Port 1 or
Serial Port 2 screens.

3. Set the address of this AurorA2000. Each AurorA2000 must have a separate address from 1 to 32.
4. The Send Time Broadcast can be set to Yes on only one of your AurorA2000s. This unit will broadcast
the time to the other AurorA2000s in your system (set their Send Time Broadcast settings to No) so that
your multiplexers are time synchronized.
5. If this AurorA2000 is your System Bus Controller, select Yes. There can be only one controller.
How do I control another AurorA2000 from my AurorA2000?
Press and hold ENTER and then press MENU to enter the AurorANet menu. Set the anetRemoteAddress to the
address of the AurorA2000 that you will control from your AurorA2000. Then operate the AurorA2000 as
usual, with the operations resulting in remote control instead of local control. The LED next to the Enter key
will blink when doing remote control.
Make sure that you do not set the anetRemoteAddress of one AurorA2000 to control a second AurorA2000
and then set the second AurorA2000 to talk to the first AurorA2000. This would set up a communications
loop.
Remember to change the anetRemoteAddress back to the address of your AurorA2000 for local control.

Serial Host Protocol

Getting Started
AurorA2000 multiplexers may be controlled by a PC or other host computer using the AurorA2000s serial
host protocol. You may connect and control up to 999 AurorA2000 multiplexers. You may also control up to
16 Vicon VCRs from a host computer. These VCRs must have a serial port option. Commands for the VCRs
are documented in the appropriate VCR manual. Commands for the AurorA2000 are documented below.
How can multiple users control the AurorA2000 simultaneously?
Two users may send commands to the AurorA2000 at the same time. One user may control the multiplexer
from its front panel while the other user sends serial port commands from a host computer. In this case, the
user at the PC must not use the commands in the Front Panel Remote Commands table below but may send
any of the time/receiver/spot monitor commands (refer to the following tables). Should only one user be
needed, this user can control the AurorA2000 from the host computer using commands from any of the
following tables. These two scenarios are illustrated in the following figures.

AurorA2000

AurorANet is Vicons proprietary 2-wire RS-485 protocol.

Throughout this manual, any reference to AurorANet implies
the Vicon RS-485 2-wire communication (not 4-wire). The example
discussed here is a special case with regard to the typical RS-485
connections to AurorA2000s; this special case is 4-wire RS-485
instead of AurorANet 2-wire RS-485.
Note: In all AurorANet configurations, you must use the AurorANet
termination box. The 4-wire RS-485 daisy-chain discussed in
this section requires the use of the RS-232/RS-422
termination box. You will not use the AurorANet termination
box to make the connections shown to the left.
Before you begin making connections, see the Reference chapter
of this manual and set your jumpers as shown for 4-wire RS-485,
paying attention to whether each AurorA2000 is at the end of the
communications line or in the middle.
In this example configuration, multiple VCRs and AurorA2000s are
connected to the PC. Youll make the connections between the PC
and VCR and VCR-to-VCR using information in the VCR instruction
manual. Note that you must use hardware handshaking from the
first VCR to the PC (make sure that RTS of the PC is connected to
CTS of the first VCR, and that DSR of the PC is connected to DTR
of the first VCR). You must also make sure that the RTS and CTS
connections on the converter are not connected to the VCR. The
converter box must be of the type that does not receiver power
from the handshake pins.
Connect the RS-422 converters transmit +/- to receive +/- of the
supplied RJ-45 termination box, respectively, of the AurorA2000
daisy-chain. Connect transmit +/- to the converters receive +/-,
respectively. Transmit and receive are abbreviated T and R on
the termination box figure shown here.
Daisy chain multiplexers using the 4-wire RS-485 connections
shown below. Connect like signals together; for example, RS-485
R+ to RS-485 R+ from one AurorA2000 to another. Continue in the
same manner with the other signals.
Make sure that you have selected RS-485 as the serial port type
on the appropriate Serial Port screen.

Command Format
Youll use communications software on your host computer to communicate with the AurorA2000s and/or
VCRs. To use HyperTerminal in PC Windows environments, you can get started by reviewing the instructions
in the Reference chapters section on downloading software updates.
Commands must take the following format if you have more than one AurorA2000:
Annn, [normal command] <CR>
where nnn is the AurorA2000 host address 001-999 and [normal command] refers to a command from the
following tables. For example:
A009,SR04 <CR>
selects receiver 4 from AurorA2000 with a host address of 9.
All commands must be followed by a <CR> or <CR><LF>. A <CR> is ASCII value 13 and a <LF> is ASCII
value 10.
Note: If you only have one AurorA2000 in your CCTV system, you do not need to send the Annn portion of
the command format as discussed above. Just send the normal command followed by the command
terminator. However, the host address of the AurorA2000 must be set to zero in the More AurorANet
Setup menu.
To broadcast a command to all AurorA2000 units in a multi-unit system, use A000 followed by the
command string. Note that the multiplexers will not respond to a broadcast command with status or
error messages.

Maintenance
Warning: Remove all power before performing maintenance procedures.

Fuse Replacement
Warning: For 220 VAC units, you must replace the two 0.5 A fuses with the two 0.4 A fuses from the
accessory kit. Use 0.5 A fuses for 110 VAC units only. Using a fuse with the incorrect rating for
the unit can result in component damage and/or fire. Take necessary grounding precautions to
prevent static discharge.

N
E

For 110 VAC units, you will find a spare 0.5 A, 250 VAC slo-blo fuse in the spare fuse side of
the fuse drawer.

VCR

For 220 VAC units, you must replace the 0.5 A fuses in the fuse drawer (one in the holder and
one spare) with the two 0.4 A, 250 VAC slo-blo fuses from the accessory kit before powering
the unit. Use the spare fuse for fuse replacement if necessary.
There is also a 5 A, 32 VAC, 3AG inline fuse located inside the unit near the front panel.
Remove the top cover and look for the fuse held in place by fuse clips. Replace it with a fuse
of the same rating (not supplied) and replace the cover.

Battery Replacement
The AurorA2000 contains a 2-3 year backup battery. To replace the battery, remove the top cover and locate
the battery, which is approximately 2 inches behind the Sequence key. Replace the battery with Vicon part
number 8000-7228-01 or Panasonic CR1632. You may also use any 3 volt, 3.2x16mm lithium battery from
your local electronics dealer. Dispose of the old battery according to manufacturers instructions.

Storage
When storing the unit for periods of 1 month or longer, place the unit and a fresh desiccant (drying agent) in a
container that provides a vapor barrier and vapor seal. Place the sealed storage container in a location where
the temperature is maintained between 32 to 122 F (0 to 50 C).

Troubleshooting & FAQs

Resetting the AurorA2000
If the AurorA2000 does not boot and run normally, you may need to force a return to the factory default
configuration. Note that this will erase any passwords and restore all AurorA2000 settings back to the factory
defaults. This is equivalent to selecting Use All Factory Defaults on the Save/Restore Menu, but this
procedure can be performed if you have forgotten your password or if the AurorA2000 menu system is not
available because the unit did not boot to this point.
1. Remove power from the AurorA2000.
2. Apply power to the AurorA2000. While the unit is booting, the spot and main display BNC monitor will
display Booting and the LEDs on the front panel will flash.
3. Press any key while the AurorA2000 is booting. Press and hold the
the 8 key.

Testing Front Panel Keys & LEDs

The front panel has a test mode to verify proper operation of keys and LEDs. Perform the following procedure
to test these items.
1. Enter the test mode by pressing the Aux 2 and Lens Speed keys at the same time.
2. The 32 LEDs will illuminate one by one to indicate proper operation. Press any key to stop the one-byone illumination of the LEDs.
3. If you press one of the 16 keys on the right side of the front panel, the version number of the front panel
software will be indicated by the LED that is blinking quickly. For example, if LED 2 is doing a fast blink,
you have front panel version 2 software.
4. Each time any of the 32 keys is pressed, the corresponding LED should change state in the following
order: Off, Slow Blink, Fast Blink, On.
5. This front panel test mode will automatically terminate thirty seconds after initiated. If you are not finished
testing, simply re-enter the front panel test mode and continue.

Show Image Rate is useful to see the image rates for each board in the system.
The upper left corner of the main display monitor will show three numbers
separated by dashes. The first number is the number of images per second from
the main board, and the second and third numbers are the number of images per
second from option boards 1 and 2, respectively. If option board 1 is operating as
duplex, then the second number is the number of images per second going to the
VCR. The lower left of each window displays HM12 where:

or 1-16 to Select.

"H" will be displayed in the window if the camera in that window has been set as a
"High" priority camera.
An "M", "1" or "2" will be displayed if that window is being filled in by the main
board, option board 1, or option board 2, respectively. For example, a
Simplex 90 system will have 2 option boards and about 1/3 of the windows
should be "owned" by each board if all update priorities are equal.
The lower right of each window shows mNNN where:
m will be displayed if the window has a higher update rate because motion is
detected.
NNN is the number of images per second multiplied by 10 for this window. For
example, NNN of 125 is 12.5 images per second.

Switch Delay is the number of milliseconds of delay used when switching either
the main or the option board's video input from one camera to the next. A longer
value will stop any missing color or video tearing type problems, but will reduce
the image update rate. You shouldnt need to change these values.

Main, Option 1 and Option 2 Image Rate shows the current images per second
being captured for the Main Display from each of the 3 input digital processing
channels (main board and 2 option boards).

Cable Recommendations
Alarm Cabling
Alarms may be wired directly to the digital multiplexers 37-pin connector. One two-conductor cable will be
needed per alarm device. The cable type and gauge are not specified by Vicon; however, the total loop
resistance of the cable must be less than 1 Kohm.
VCR Cabling
The VCR may be used to control the timing of camera switching during recording using the VCR clock signal.
Vicon recommends 24 (or larger) gauge, twisted pair cable at a maximum distance of 100 feet. If the Alarm
Aux Out connection is made, use 24 (or larger) gauge, twisted pair cable at a maximum distance of 1000 feet.
Video Cabling
Caution: Careful selection of proper cable is essential to obtain the best performance from this equipment. Vicon assumes no
responsibility for poor performance when cables other than those recommended, or equivalent, are installed. In all cases, coaxial cable
impedance should be 75 ohms.

Materials
Use only a pure copper center conductor. Do not use a copper-plated steel or aluminum center conductor, as they will
result in poor quality video. Solid-core bare copper conductor is the best type, where flexing and bending will be minimal. If
severe bending and flexing is required for installation, use a stranded center conductor. Never exceed the manufacturers
minimum bend radius specification. Use cellular (foam) polyethylene dielectric except where heavy moisture exists. For
moisture conditions, use solid polyethylene dielectric cable with a heavy exterior insulation. The shield must be copper
braid providing 95% or better coverage.

38 Reference

XX040-02-00 Rev 1203 AurorA2000

Cable Types
The cable types listed below are the most common 75-ohm types used. They vary in size (diameter), dielectric type and
net DC resistance. The larger cable results in a lower DC resistance and better video quality, with increased difficulty in
handling and installation. Let the required picture quality and cable distance provide a guide in choosing the best cable
type. For cables other than the approved Vicon types below, contact the manufacturers listed below. Note that BC refers
to bare copper and TC refers to tinned copper.

Twisted-Pair Cable
Caution: Careful selection of proper cable is essential to obtain the best performance. Vicon assumes no
responsibility for poor performance when cables other than the recommended types, or equivalent, are used.
Materials
Use a pure copper stranded conductor with or without a tin-plating to obtain a low DC resistance. Do not use cable with
either steel or aluminum stranded conductor because they do not transfer signals effectively for long distances. The
preferred insulation and cable jacket is Polyvinyl chloride (PVC). It has better electrical characteristics than polyethylene
and resists flames, sunlight and most solvents, but is more vulnerable to moisture.
Cable Types
The most commonly used cable types are dual individually-shielded, twisted pair in a single jacket. This configuration is
the most convenient for RS-422/ RS485 applications. Single individually-shielded, twisted pair is also a suitable cable.
Choose a Belden cable type by referring to the characteristics and maximum distances listed below. The maximum
distance for the most reliable digital control refers to the distance between the AurorA2000 and the Camera Dome
Assembly. The characteristics of the cables in table below should be used as a guideline when cables other than Belden
are used. Materials and construction must follow the guidelines above.

Synchonizing the Time on Multiple AurorA2000s

With AurorANet
Synchronizing the time in an AurorANet system is accomplished through the More AurorANet Setup menu.
Simply select Yes on the Send Time Broadcast menu item on the AurorA2000 that will send the time to the
other AurorA2000s. Set Send Time Broadcast to No on the other AurorA2000s.
With Serial Host Protocol
For multiple AurorA2000s communicating using the serial host protocol, there are two ways to synchronize
the time for all of your AurorA2000s. You can set the time from one AurorA2000 as follows.
1. On the Serial Port screen, set the Mode to Printer on the AurorA2000 that will set the time for all
AurorA2000s. Set the Mode to Host on all of the other AurorA2000s.
2. On the More Host Setup screen, set the Print Time Broadcast to Yes on the AurorA2000 that will set the
time for all AurorA2000s. Keep the default setting of No for the other AurorA2000s.
3. You must also connect all of the receive lines for all AurorA2000s to the transmit line of the AurorA2000
which will broadcast the time.
Alternatively, you may set the time by sending a print command from the host computer as follows. Leave the
default setting of No for the Print Time Broadcast menu item for all AurorA2000s.
1. Connect all of the receive lines for all AurorA2000s to the transmit line of the host computer.
2. Send the command A000,STdddddddddd where dddddddddd = decimal number of seconds since 1970,
which is a standard C/Unix time.

Downloading Software Updates

Caution: Completely disconnect your AurorA2000 from other devices before downloading software
updates. Failure to do so may cause unexpected results.
Perform the following procedure to receive software updates.
Note: You may use Com 1 or Com 2 on your AurorA2000. Remember to check your jumper settings as
discussed in this chapter because the com port must be set to RS-232. The instructions in the following
procedure assume that you are using Com 1.
1. You may obtain an update to your AurorA2000 software by several means. Updates are often available at
the Vicon website (www.vicon-cctv.com). Contact Vicon Technical Support at 1-800-34-VICON (1-800348-4266) to find out whether you have the latest software and how to receive it. This procedure
assumes you already have the update on your PC hard drive, on a CD, diskette or other readable media.
2. Remove power from the AurorA2000 and personal computer.
.

You may purchase an AurorA2000 flash upgrade/RS-232 cable (product code 7721-00) by calling Vicon

3. Connect the cable to the AurorA2000 Com 1 connector either on the front or rear of the unit. Connect the
cable to an RS-232 connector on your PC (Com 1 for these instructions).
4. Apply power to the PC and use the Windows Start Menu to access HyperTerminal from the Accessories
program group. You may use other communications packages that provide X-Modem transfer if you like.
Note: HyperTerminal instructions were written using HyperTerminal version 595160. If you are using a later or
earlier version, refer to HyperTerminals help file or other documentation if necessary.
5. A dialog box will display that requests a name for this connection (a2000, for example). Enter a name and
press OK.
6. In the next dialog box to display, choose Direct to Com 1 from the Connect using field. The other fields
on this screen are not applicable for this procedure.
7. The next screen will allow you to define a baud rate of 115,200, 8 data bits, 1 stop bit and None for the
parity and flow control. You may use the other baud rates listed on this screen (you must match the baud
rate at the host computer with the one you select in this screen), but 115,200 bps will insure the quickest
download. Press OK.
8. If you have not already done so, connect a monitor to the spot monitor BNC or main display monitor BNC
on the rear of the AurorA2000.
9. If you have defined a customized configuration using the AurorA2000 menus and would like to save those
settings to the PC, perform the following steps a-h. Otherwise, you may skip this step (your configuration
will be overwritten).

update from Vicon, as discussed in the beginning of this procedure.
19. Select Send. Transfer will begin. A transfer screen will display on the PC and Flash Download will
display on your AurorA2000 monitor. When the monitor displays a message indicating that the download
is complete (you will hear a double beep and LEDs will stop flashing), you may exit HyperTerminal and
disconnect your cable.
20. Reboot after downloading the updated software by pressing Menu and then 2 or turn the power off and
then on again.
21. If you did not perform step 9, this procedure is complete. If you saved your settings to the PC in step 9,
you may transfer the configuration file back to the AurorA2000 now. To do so, perform step 9 again, using
the Send command of the Hyperterminal Transfer Menu and the Download Configuration menu of the
AurorA2000 menu system.

Determining the Fields per Clock Pulse

Note: Vicon recommends using the clock connection to the VCR for efficiency, accuracy and improved
refresh rate. This connection is discussed in the Installation chapter. Using the clock connection means
that you do not need to determine the fields per clock pulse discussed below.
If the field delay is not known, it must be determined from the following method. Obtain the specification sheet
or other documentation from the VCR manufacturer which contains the actual recording duration for each
mode. Determine your type of VCR and then use the appropriate equation below to calculate the fields per
clock pulse setting.
for NTSC VCRs:
actual recording duration
2

for PAL VCRs:

actual recording duration
3

for VCRs (in NTSC or PAL) with

HD (high density) mode:
actual recording duration
6

Note: For some VCRs, a 1 must be added to the clock pulse setting obtained above. Use trial and error to
determine whether you need to do this.

Jumper Settings for RS-422/RS-485/RS-232

By default, Com1 is set for RS-232 and Com 2 for RS-422. You must redefine software settings and move
hardware jumpers to use RS-232/RS-422 on other than the default ports. To use RS-485, you may redefine
jumper settings as discussed here or use the AurorANet termination box as described in Installation.
Warning: Remove power from the AurorA2000 until this procedure is complete.
Remove the top cover of the unit and disconnect ribbon cable J6, located in the right back of the main board
(viewing the AurorA2000 from the front). Underneath the ribbon cable you will see the set of jumpers shown
in the figure below. Using this table, place jumpers in the positions listed in order to define the com ports
(remember that you do not have to do this unless you want to use RS-232 on COM2 or RS-422 on COM1).
