Level: 9th Grade

Lesson Objectives:
Knowledge of how to identify a binomial and how to work with binomials when
multiplied and added with other numbers.

Lesson Structure:

Introduce how to identify binomials, explain

that they are a pair of terms, usually grouped
together by parenthesis. Clearly write out all
instructions in order to better communicate
these ideas to those with sensory and
communicative disorders.

Show examples of
binomials, then write
multiple different
polynomials on the board
and ask students to write
whether they think theyre
binomials or not.
Show examples explaining
like terms, then have
students identify like
terms from example
problems.
Run through examples of
the distribution property,
then hand out a worksheet
testing the application of
identifying binomials and
combining them with

Introduce the necessary steps in adding and

subtracting from binomials by identifying like
terms. Continue clearly writing out all
information.
Explain distribution when multiplying
binomials by monomials, using arrows to
show how the distribution process works.

Materials Required:

Students:
o Scrap paper for notes and showing work
o Pencils and/or other writing tools
o Calculator, preferably scientific but graphic can also work.
Teacher:a typed copy of the notes in class, emphasizing the key

o Practice worksheet
necessary work with example equations. Adapt notes to account
for any sensory disorders.
Stop between sections and as necessary to ensure that students
have a grasp of the process they are working with.
Meet with interpreters before the class to be sure that they
understand and can communicate the information.
Record the lecture (both video and audio) given and provide a
copy of said recording to students who may need to listen
differently due to disability
Encourage students to work together with their time in class,

Additional Notes:

Assessment:

If the class has a textbook:

o Assign 20-30 odd-numbered problems from the textbook,
depending on the length of each section of problems. Encourage
the use of answers in the back of the book to check or for
students to help themselves understand the questions better.
Require work to be shown in order to receive credit.
If the class is based online:
o Assign a similar 20-30 problems, providing a separate answer
sheet for students to check their work. Require a paper with
written work if not provided in the program used.
