QUESTION 1

 a) Describe the difference between scalar and vector quantities. Provide an example for each type of the above mentioned quantities. i) ii) Explain the Newton's First Law of motion. Sketch an appropriate diagram to assist in the explanation.

b) The car shown in Figure Q1(b) is to be towed using two ropes. Knowing that the resultant force R = 950 N and is directed along the positive x-axis, sketch a force-triangle to illustrate the relationship of the forces R, F A and F B . Determine the magnitude of F A and F B . (12 marks)

a) A beam is loaded as shown in Figure Q2(a). Neglecting the reactions at the supports, determine the equivalent force couple system at point A.

b) A horizontal beam is supported by a hinge and a pulley and is loaded as shown in Figure Q2(b). Neglecting the weight of the beam and the friction of the pulley, determine the tension in cable ADEB and the component of the reaction at C.

Figure Q3 shows the cross-section area of a beam. Determine:

a) the location of the centroid, C which is measured from the base of the cross-section area. (10 marks)

b) the area moment of inertia of the beam at centroid, C with respect to x'-axis, /*•. Also determine the radius of gyration k x ; of the cross-section area with respect to x'-axis. (10 marks)

QUESTION 4

a) Explain the concepts of equilibrium of two-force member and three-force member. Sketch appropriate diagrams.

b) A truss is subjected to the loadings as shown in Figure Q4(b). Determine the reaction forces acting at supports A and F, and the forces in members BC, IC and IH. State if the members are in tension or compression.

 a) Give one example of static friction and kinetic friction. i) ii) The coefficient of static friction between the surface is 0.35. Determine the angle of friction.

b) The frame structure shown in Figure Q5(b) is subjected to a load of 500 N and 2000 N respectively at point G.

i) Draw free body diagram of members BC, CD, DF and AE.

ii) Determine the components of forces acting on members BC, DF and AE.
