ADMINISTRATION OF MEDICINE POLICY

RATIONALE

This policy is to ensure that the children who are on medication continue their treatment
while at the preschool.

PURPOSE

To ensure that children on medication are given the correct dosage of the medication at the
correct time.

GUIDELINES / PROCEDURES

* Medicine administration forms are kept in the nursery and in the preschool, to record all
details concerning the administration of medication to the children.

* Parents/whanau/caregivers will fill in details e.g. child's name, date, type and dosage of
medication and time to be given. No medication will be given without a signature. All
medication must be handed to a teacher at the time of arrival.

* A teacher will witness and sign also. A reason for the medication will be verbally stated.

* Children that are permanently on medication for a medical condition will fill in a Individual
Health From, teachers will sign and date form and inform parents when medication is given.
These forms will be updated quarterly.

* When administering medication, a staff member, who holds a first aid certificate, will
administer the medication and sign the form at the time the medication is given. A second
teacher will verify the administering of the medication and also sign the form at this time.

* All medication must be named.

* No medication will be given to a child that is already in a syringe.
