Um dos mais importantes animadores em
atividade, autor de clssicos como Crack,
O Homem que plantava rvores e The
Mighty River, Frdrick Back procura
atravs de seus filmes ressaltar valores
humanos e o amor natureza, por meio de
animaes de beleza estonteante, desenhadas
simplesmente com lpis de cor e aquarelas.
Anima Mundi continuar oferecendo suas

futuras capas colaborao de artistas do mundo da animao,
prosseguindo com a srie iniciada em 1998 com o animador/
ilustrador brasileiro Rui de Oliveira.
Anima Mundi 99s catalogue cover was specially and generously illustrated
by canadian-french-german artist Frdrick Back, our honored guest in the
year of 1995.
Frdrick Back is one of the most important animators now in activity,
author of classics like Crack, The Man Who Planted Trees and The
Mighty River. In his films he stresses human values and the love for nature,
through astonishing beautiful animations done with simple and traditional
techniques such as color crayons and watercolors.
Anima Mundi will continue to offer its cover to the collaboration of artists
from the world of animation, going on with the series started in 1998 with
Brazilian animator/illustrator Rui de Oliveira.

Petrobras suamos a camisa para acompanhar o ritmo de um festival

sete anos, o que este evento vem fazendo atender a uma enorme

Nesta stima edio, para fazer frente a uma procura cada vez
maior, Anima Mundi loteia novos espaos alm dos tradicionais.
No apenas ocupa as salas de cinema e vdeo e o foyer do CCBB,
como invade o Teatro II e espalha-se do lado de fora, na nossa
Praa Animada. Ali se cumpre risca um dos objetivos maiores do
festival: popularizar uma arte que nasceu para ser popular. Pelo
terceiro ano consecutivo, Anima Mundi salta tambm para So
Paulo e assim estabelece uma ponte de luz entre os dois maiores
centros da animao no Brasil.
Motivos no faltam para comemorar. Ao crescimento do festival
corresponde o aumento da participao brasileira, que nunca
esteve to expressiva como este ano. Anima Mundi orgulha-se de
estimular e fazer parte dessa nova onda de interesse pela animao

distinguir um trabalho brasileiro como forma de marcar o dcimo
aniversrio do Centro Cultural e sua firme opo por prestigiar os

novos talentos e refletir as tendncias dominantes do cinema

Phew! We did it! Once again Centro Cultural Banco do Brasil, the

In this seventh year, in order to do justice to an ever-increasing demand,

Anima Mundi has taken over new spaces in addition to the traditional
ones. It doesnt just occupy the CCBBs film and video theatres and foyer,
but has invaded Teatro II and spread outdoors into our Animated Square.
This is where one of the festivals main objectives is met: to make popular an
art form which was born to be popular. For the third year running, Anima
Mundi also hops over to So Paulo, thus establishing a bridge of light
between the two main centres of animation in Brazil.
There are plenty of reasons to celebrate. The festivals growth corresponds to
the increase in Brazilian participation, which has never been as expressive
as it is this year. Anima Mundi is proud to stimulate and take part in this
new wave of interest for animation. Within this context, the CCBB award
has been created in order to distinguish a Brazilian work and mark the
tenth anniversary of the Centro Cultural and its firm decision to honour the
animators and their admirers.
As well as all this, Anima Mundi continues to highlight the work of great
international masters, encourage the development of new talent and reflect
the dominant tendencies in world animated film. More countries, new
techniques and the updated comeback of old practices are part of this years
festival programme, which should be the most intense since its creation. Let
the usual large and passionate audiences come and join in this feast made
for the eyes and the imagination. Everything is ready, the reels are loaded
and the pleasure is ours, too.
No princpio era o sonho. O sonho de reunir no Rio de Janeiro os
adeptos de todas as idades, para juntos viverem as sensaes de
organisers of Anima Mundi and Petrobras have had to roll up our sleeves
in order to keep up with the rhythm of a festival which has acquired a life of
its own and, like a mischievous cartoon animal, shhhoooommm!, off it goes,
growing the whole time, way ahead of the rest of us. If there is someone to
blame, then it has to be the audience. For the past seven years, this event has
been the major provider for a highly demanding audience, by offering the
creativity, diversity and technological pulsation of world animation.

raro na verdade o nico da Amrica Latina exclusivamente
dedicado animao que motivasse os seus maiores criadores a
mostrarem para o pblico brasileiro o que havia de mais moderno
e instigante em mbito internacional. E que no fosse apenas uma
exibio, mas algo que mobilizasse a cidade, que provocasse o
debate e que permitisse aos mais jovens colocar as mos na massa.
Quando a luz do primeiro projetor se acendeu, era possvel ver
naqueles rostos que se iluminavam que o sonho era possvel como
so possveis todos os sonhos. Para torn-lo realidade, no entanto,
seria preciso que algum, com fora para realiz-lo, nele acreditasse.

Passados sete anos, podemos constatar que, se cabe algum mrito

In the beginning there was the dream. The dream of gathering together, in

When the light of the first projector lit up, one could to see in those
illuminated faces that the dream was possible - just as all dreams are
possible. In order to make it come true, however, someone was needed with
the strength to carry it through, to believe in it.
After seven years we can safely say that, if any merit is due the sponsors

beginning, believed in the project and pledged their commitment to making

As possibilidades de projees tridimensionais, os sistemas

sonoros tipo environmental sound, a realidade virtual, as salas
de projees que incorporam movimentao dos assentos, a
utilizao de essncias com odores, projees hologrficas e outras
tecnologias saem do campo da experimentao e ampliam sua
popularidade. Mas jamais sero uma imposio, pois uma boa
animao ser sempre possvel com os instrumentos mais banais: o
lpis e o papel.

Maximum freedom and the broadest creative expression are perhaps,

The course of the creative process is made up of a fascinating adventure of

the imaginary, where everything is possible. There are no imposed limits,
rules, or techniques. The content touches upon, or who knows, exceeds the
limits of inventive capacity. It destroys and constructs taboos, prejudices,
values, morals and other mechanisms of the mind.
Animation is the only platform capable of incorporating all other languages
in the history of human expression. From cave paintings to the idealisation
of the galaxies and intangible astronomic phenomena. From street theatre
to electro-acoustic music, etc. etc.
The single condition, 2-dimensionality, starts crumbling under animations
greatest raw material: illusion.
The possibilities of 3-dimensional projections, sound systems such as
environmental sound, virtual reality, screening rooms with seat movement,
the use of smell, holographic projections and other technologies, are coming
out of the field of experimentation, and are broadening their popularity.
But they will never be an imposition, since good animation will always be
possible with the most mundane of tools: pencil and paper.

young artists and uncountable masterpieces.
From the United Kingdom, Joanna Quinn brings her elegant, critical and
humorous films.
Eric Darnell shows us his trajectory from independent animation to the
kingdom of AntZ.
Also from the United States, Mike Belzer reveals in a workshop the secrets
of animated puppets.
And the Ncleo de Animao de Campinas, teaches us with its twenty

years experience that it is with children that we must begin productive and

instigantes e criativas e em to grande quantidade.
Encabeada por artistas como Priit Parn, Rao Heidmets e
Mati Ktt, a animao estoniana pode ser definida como uma
combinao do racional com o absurdo. Cada animador mantm
seu estilo, mas todos tm em comum uma conscincia filosfica e
poltica que analisa a influncia das estruturas ideolgicas sobre a
individualidade, sem cair na soluo fcil do maniquesmo.

Os primeiros passos da animao estoniana foram dados por Elbert

Tuganov, que nos anos 50 trabalhou na Alemanha, fazendo
seqncias de crditos e outros trabalhos grficos. Sabendo que no
resto da Unio Sovitica eram produzidos muitos filmes de animao
de bonecos, ele resolveu fazer o mesmo na Estnia. Dirigiu Little
Peters dream, o primeiro filme em animao produzido no pas, e
fundou um estdio importante de animao de bonecos. Um dos
principais colaboradores de Tuganov foi Rein Raamat. Ele esteve
por trs da criao do estdio de desenhos animados em 1971 e foi
uma espcie de mentor de outros artistas importantes como Parn,
Janno Pldma, Mati Ktt and Heiki Ernits.
A mostra que Anima Mundi est
trazendo para o Brasil foi preparada
por Chris Robinson, diretor executivo
do Festival Internacional de Cinema
de Animao de Ottawa, estudioso da
animao e autor de um livro sobre a
histria da animao estoniana.
Chris estar presente ao festival para
apresentar os trs programas que
traam um panorama cronolgico e
temtico desta original e importante
cinematografia.
It is surprising how a small country like Estonia, with a population of 1.5

million, has come to produce some of the most enticing and creative animation
in the past 25 years. Especially since this has happened during a period of
almost continuous hostile circumstances. Lead by artists such as Priit It is

animation can be defined as a combination of the rational and the absurd.
Each animator keeps his own style,but they all have in common a
philosophical and political conscience which analyses how individuality is
affected by ideological structures, without the easy cop-out of Manichaeism
The first steps in Estonian animation were taken by Elbert Tuganbov. In
the 1950s he worked in Germany doing credit sequences and other graphic
work. Knowing that the rest of the Soviet Union made many puppet
animation films, he decided to do the same in Estonia. He directed Little
Peters Dream, the first animation film produced in the region, and founded
a puppet animation studio.
One of Tuganovs main collaborators was Rein Raamat. He was behind the
creation of the cel animation studio in 1971, and was a sort of mentor for other
important artists like Parn, Janno P_ldma, Mati Ktt and Heiki Ernits.
The retrospective which Anima Mundi brings to Brazil was created by Chris
Robinson, the executive director of the Ottawa International Animation
Festival, and also a connoisseur of animation, currently writing a book
about the history of Estonian animation.
Robinson will attend the festival to present the three different programs
with a chronological and thematic panorama of this original and important
cinematography.
