World-first HFO chillers in south London store land National award for Waitrose and project partners
A world-first in refrigeration technology, which harnesses the latest generation of low global warming HFO refrigerants in a
Waitrose branch in London, has won a national award for the supermarket and its project partners, Klima-Therm, Frascold
and Geoclima.
The project, at Waitrose Bromley, secured the retailer the End User of the Year Award in the National ACR Awards, held at
the Bloomsbury Big Top in London, on 22 November.

The Italian-made Geoclima chillers, installed and commissioned by Klima-Therm, are based on Frascold reciprocating

compressors and operate on refrigerant HFO R1234ze (Solstice L13) from Honeywell.

World-first HFO chillers in south

The compressors were tested on the HFO refrigerant in Frascolds research and development centre at Rescaldina, near
Milan, before being supplied to chiller manufacturer Geoclima, and then onto Wimbledon-based Klima-Therm for installation
at the Waitrose branch.

The two air-cooled HFO machines, each rated at 180kW, provide chilled water as a condensing medium for the in-store
integral cases running on propene.

The judges praised the partners innovative and pioneering approach which enabled them to beat larger, global
manufacturers in the race to develop low Global Warming Potential (GWP) refrigeration systems that are safe and efficient.
The judges acknowledged: They delivered a solution ahead of the market.

Jim Burnett, general manager, engineering at Waitrose said: As a responsible retailer and growing business, we are
committed to finding alternative refrigeration technologies to further reduce our carbon footprint. We are proud to receive this
award in conjunction with our partners, in recognition of our work to find viable future solutions.

HFO refrigerants combine good efficiency with very low global warming potential. In addition, they are safe to use and
operate at relatively low pressure compared with some competing alternatives, such as carbon dioxide.
Roberto Mallozzi, managing director of Klima-Therm, said:

NEWS ANALYSIS - A hybrid

approach

We are delighted to have been part of the award-winning project

team. It was very much a collaborative effort and shows what can be
achieved with technical creativity and responsiveness to market
needs.

Giuseppe Galli, managing director of Frascold, said: We are very

pleased to be associated with this achievement. Frascolds research
and development team is working at the forefront of advances in the
industry, and the HFO initiative is just one of the programmes aimed at
developing high efficiency, safe cooling solutions for the future.
The team believes that performance with HFOs can be significantly improved with further optimisation, including refinements
to the compressor valve plate design, motor sizing and reducing pressure losses through the compressor.
