Feedback: 10Ft Tall theatre company

Videotape
Thank you for coming along this evening. This event is
part of The Lemon Trees programme of new work. Your
feedback is invaluable. Please take a minute to share it
with us.
10Tt Tall theatre company would like to ask the following questions:
1. What is the purpose of theatre?

To entertain, intrigue, educate in a way which radio/TV/film dont do.

To entertain and serendipitously inform
For enjoyment
Open Ended to be a mirror to society
To get people involved in a different understanding of drama
To loose yourself in a story + feel the emotion
To bring words into motion and emotion
Bring people together
Enlighten, bring cultural awareness and make you think about the
world/society we live in-educate
To get people to think and see things in a different way
To entertain, inform and evoke emotion
To provoke thought, to entertain to inspire to engage and move
to entertain, to challenge, to empower
Mainly to entertain but to educate to a certain degree
To make people think and feel and experience different things
To tell stories
To Educate and entertain To entertain to provide experiences and engage
emotions
To inspire, educate and entertain

2. What do you think puts people off attending theatre performances?

Cost in expensive
Expensive, not relevant to them
A pre-conceived belief that the theatre is not for them (They are wrong!)

Cost, knowledge of programme poor, approachability of

venues/perception
The idea that it is for rich or clever people
Misconceptions about theatre being for a certain group of people. Intimidating
venues. Cost. Lack of information
Content, lack of knowledge
Cost, time commitment, too formal because they wont understand
cost/lack of arts education
cost/subjects of play
Their perceived distractions
Price or tickets + lack of awareness of whats available
Misunderstanding what goes on behind those doors
Maybe they think its too expensive
Fear-Lack of experience from a young age
price
The formality/unknown quantity. You can see trailers for films + musicals are a
known quantity so easy to predict

3. What is your current perception of theatre currently being made in

the North East?

That it is under rated

Not enough local talent productions
Not seen enough to comment
Really dont know
there is not enough good theatre
sorry no idea
It is evolving + growing
think it is a really positive thing and a worth and valuable thing to do
None existent-nothing in our local dialect, nothing celebrating our local
history. Aberdeenshire has Fleemen productions but they are not well
known
Vibrant, active, good.
Limited but some interesting work being produced
There isnt enough
Amateur comedy or musicals. I am not aware of any professional drama
being created here other then Sunset Song or Silver darlings a few years
ago
Lack of drama in mainstream theatre & linked to lack of rep company &
medium sized (larger then Lemon Tree) venue? Lack of local
theatre/drama culture-which events like this are trying to address
Lack of mainstream/alternative plays at APA
A lot of variety including a lot of new writing but a lack of audiences

4. What responsibilities do you think a theatre company in the North

East should have?

To reflect the NE now + historically but not to be stuck there and put on
work set in other places
Staying in Aberdeen
Creating work for local writers, actors, involving members of the public
in theatrical experiences
Putting on a show local actors/writers
Bring theatre (real) to the area. present required/National/ working with
uni/college students as players of the audience.
Deliver stories that either actually happened or could have happened in
the North East. Preserve and support North East heritage
Do relevant material prominent to the N.E
They should firstly be responsible to themselves. Beyond that telling the
stories of the North East
Know the composition of its audience/area. Delivered a varied
programme
Demonstrate work in DORIC. Celebrate local history/culture. Foster local
talent.
To bring theatre to spaces people want to go and feel at home in. Also
that is affordable and inclusive
Educate and spread the need for the arts in the N.E
Bringing theatre to a broad audience
Not sure
Nights like this

Intriguing leaving me wanting to know the rest of the story. Enjoyed

the direct dialogue to the audience which was fully engaged
Very good
Sparkling! Well written and a well performed piece
Excellent really involved in the performance and wanted to see more &
understand more about the characters and what led them to here
Refreshing, like theatre in the round. Not a fan of contemporary theatre
but as least as good as what I saw at the Traverse theatres short play
festival earlier this year
Really enjoyed it. Good piece. loved the intimacy and paired down
staging. Allowed the focus to be on the Story telling
Loved it. The intimacy developed through the characters and the set
was spot on.
It was fabulous. I loved the intimacy. if it were a big venue I wouldnt
have enjoyed it nearly so much
Unsure
Great performance
It was engaging and engrossing in all aspects
Very high quality of acting
Great
Strong performances. Unattractive characters in an intriguing set up.
Impressive to work with a few props in a tiny space. The full piece would
need to look more interesting to avoid it being a radio play + how long?
Id like more acting without dialogue/commentary.
Under energised, however good.
It was really good.
An interesting and involving piece of theatre
Great acting, interesting to see more.
Well done considering the time pressure. Narrative interesting enough to
hold my attention. Minimal/intimate. Setting made the most of the
venue. Naturalistic style
6. What would you like to see 10Ft Tall do going forward?

Always deliver in Aberdeen accents (audiences will relate to this) Make it

your trademark. Let amateurs and West End visiting companies perform
non North East drama
Persevere
Follow their own direction!
Go with your instincts and do things you will enjoy as others will too
I know as a historian and author. Id like to contribute! Haha but
seriously DO NOT FORGET local history and culture because it does not
currently have a stage voice.
Continue creating work for local audiences. Involving creatives in the
widest sense

Keep growing. Go out into the community. open to amateurs

Grow and expand your passion for theatre to share with the North

East. Go for it.

Keep on doing what you are doing
Anything and everything to bring in a universal audience
More of the same
More of the same style
Keep going make sure your profile is high
Exploring what kind of work you want to do
Doing more things in Aberdeen.
More plays/employing good actors/playwrights

1. Aberdeen Performing Arts would like to ask one question.

What stories would you like to see told on our stage?

Local ones which are both locally and nationally significant
Any stories which relate to the lives of people in Aberdeen. Local stories but
also stories about areas out with the ken of Aberdeen
Anything like tonight
Not just ones set in the NE. Ones with no swearing, just for a change.
Educational ones where you learn as well as being entertained
Plays written by budding playwrights
All types because entertainment is entertaining.
The conversations on the buses
A wide range as possible and as original as possible eg locally written (but not
exclusively) about local events but with universal storylines to. To be honest
anything that is engaging, entertaining etc that is professionally (in its
broadest sense) produced/delivered. Need more time to give a better
response to this question
LOCAL HISTORY IN DORIC!!!
Robert the Bruce in Aberdeen. What was that all about? Gordon Highlanderspresent one of their campaigns (like Black Watch but our own soldiers
Aberdeen and North East.
thought provoking, emotional and stirring stories which add to your life
experience in ways different to your normal everyday life
I have no specific stories that i want but I cant help wondering why I see
more theatre in Dundee than in Aberdeen. That suggests to me that for
middle-aged bourgeois consumers of theatre like me that the Reps practice
of their work could provide some useful insights.
