The LDX-3207 i s a p r e c i s i o n c u r r e n t source o p t i m i z e d f o r d r i v i n g
l a s e r diodes and LEDs w i t h an o u t p u t range of 0 t o 200 mA and a
compl iance v o l t a g e o f 5 v o l t s .

CHAPTER 2
OPERATION

2.1

INSTALLATION

2.2 AC Power C o n s i d e r a t i o n s
The LDX-3207 can be c o n f i g u r e d t o o p e r a t e a t l i n e v o l t a g e s r a n g i n g
f r o m 105-125 VAC o r 210-250 VAC.
N o r m a l l y , t h i s i s done a t t h e
f a c t o r y and need n o t be changed b e f o r e o p e r a t i n g t h e i n s t r u m e n t .
However, check t o be s u r e t h a t t h e v o l t a g e p r i n t e d on t h e r e a r
p a n e l o f t h e i n s t r u m e n t matches t h e p o w e r - l i n e v o l t a g e i n y o u r
area.
Refer t o Chapter 5 (Maintenance) i f i t i s necessary t o
r e c o n f i g u r e t h e i n p u t v o l t a g e range.

To avoid e l e c t r i c a l shock hazard, connect


the
instrument
only t o properly
earthgrounded, 3-prong r e c e p t a c l e s .
Failure to

T i l t-Foot Adjustment

The LOX-3207 i s s u p p l i e d w i t h s p e c i a l , e x t e n d a b l e f r o n t legs.


The
f r o n t o f t h e i n s t r u m e n t can be t i l t e d up f o r b e t t e r v i e w i n g b y
r o t a t i n g t h e l e g s d o m w a r d u n t i l t h e y snap i n t o t h e down and oc ked
p o s i t ion.

Rack M o u n t i n g

The LDX-3207 may be r a c k mounted s i n g l y by i n s t a l I i n g a r a c k mount


f l a n g e on one s i d e o f t h e e n c l o s u r e and a 1 / 2 w i d t h f i l l e r panel o n
t h e o t h e r side.
Alternatively,
t w o X - s e r i e s e n c l o s u r e s can be
i n t e r l o c k e d s i d e - b y - s i d e and t h e n r a c k mounted as a u n i t b y u s i n g a
p a i r o f r a c k mount f l a n g e s .

2.7 Power -Up Sequence


p r o p e r l y connected t o an AC power source,
With t h e LDX-3207
p r e s s i n g t h e KWER o f f / o n s w i t c h causes the u n i t t o i n i t i a t e i t s
powe r - u p
sequence.
During t h i s
sequence
the
audible
fault
i n d i c a t i o r (beeper) w i l l sound m o m e n t a r i l y and t h e d i s p l a y may
b r i e f l y i n d i c a t e a non-zero reading.
However, d u r i n g t h i s p e r i o d
t h e o u t p u t t e r m i n a l s a r e u n c o n d i t i o n a l l y s h o r t e d and t h e o u t p u t
. o f f / o n s w i t c h i s i n h i b i t e d f o r s e v e r a l seconds p r e v e n t i n g c u r r e n t
f r o m leaving the output terminals.
A f t e r a p p r o x i m a t e l y t w o seconds
the d i s p l y should read 0.0 mA.
2.8 Cur r e n t L i m i t Adjustment
The f r o n t panel LlMlT c o n t r o l s e t t i n g determines the maximum o u t p u t
c u r r e n t f o r a l l modes o f operation..
This c u r r e n t l i m i t . i s set by
r o t a t i n g t h e LlMlT knob t o t h e d e s i r e d value.
The c u r r e n t l i m i t
s e t t i n g can be e s t i m a t e d by o b s e r v i n g p o s i t i o n o f t h e knob i n d i c a t o r
l i n e r e l a t i v e t o t h e 0 and 200 m.4 markings or d e t e r m i n e d p r e c i s e l y
by m o m e n t a r i l y depressing t h e knob.
Once t h e LlMlT knob has been
depressed, the d i s p l a y w i l l read the c u r r e n t l i m i t s e t t i n g f o r
a p p r o x i m a t e l y 5 seconds.
D u r i n g t h i s 5 second i n t e r v a l t h e LlMlT
DlSP ( l i m i t d i s p l a y ) i n d i c a t o r remains on.
The c u r r e n t l i m i t s e t t i n g i s independent o f t h e v o l t a g e d r o p o f the
device connected t o t h e o u t p u t o f the 3207 and t h e r e f o r e no dumny
load i s r e q u i r e d f o r p r e c i s e adjustment o f
the c u r r e n t l i m i t .
Furthermore, since t h e c u r r e n t l i m i t c i r c u i t r y i s f u l l y independent
o f the main c u r r e n t c o n t r o l , the c u r r e n t l i m i t can be a d j u s t e d
s a f e l y even v ~ h i l et h e o u t p u t i s a c t i v e .
2.9 O u t p u t C u r r e n t Adjustment
Primary output c u r r e n t c o n t r o l
i s p r o v i d e d by the l a r g e knob
l o c a t e d on t h e f r o n t panel o f the LDX-3207.
This knob i s connected
t o a p r e c i s i o n 1 0 - t u r n p o t e n t i o m e t e r and can e a s i l y be used t o
achieve a s e t t i n g r e s o l u t i o n of 0.05 nt4 ( o r 0.02 mA w i t h some care).
Depending on whether t h e 3207 i s i n LOCAL or REMOTE mode, t h e
o u t p u t c u r r e n t i s a l s o a f f e c t e d by any c o n t r o l v o l t a g e a p p l i e d t o
t h e MOD i n p u t connector
and comnands
sent
t o the optional
CPIB/IEEE-488
i n t e r f a c e (when i n s t a l led).
Under a l l modes o f
operation the output c u r r e n t i s u n c o n d i t i o n a l l y l i m i t e d t o the value
s e t by t h e LlMlT adjustment.

L o c a l Mode
When i n i t i a l l y t u r n e d on t h e LDX-3207 i s i n LOCAL
mode.
In this
o p e r a t i n g mode the o u t p u t
current
is
d e t e r m i n e d by
the
s e t t i n g of
t h e main o u t p u t
current
adjustment knob and any c o n t r o l s i g n a l a p p l i e d t o the MOD
i n p u t connector.
The c o n t r o l l e v e l g e n e r a t e d by t h e c o n t r o l
knob i s summed w i t h the c o n t r o l s i g n a l a p p l i e d t o the MOD
input.
I n e f f e c t t h e c o n t r o l knob a c t s as a DC b i a s . ( o f f s e t )
adjustment t o t h e s i g n a l a p p l i e d t o t h e MOD input.

t o the 3 2 0 7 v i a t h e i n t e r f a c e .
Once i n REMOTE mode, the
o u t p u t cur r e n t l e v e l i s determined by a p p r o p r i a t e commands
sent over the CPIB/IEEE-488 bus.
For example, t h e c m a n d
'CSO.01' w i l l cause t h e o u t p u t of t h e 3207 t o go t o 50.01 m4

OPEN CKT i n d i c a t e s t h a t t h e c m p l iance v o l t a g e r e q u i r e d a t
t h e 3207 o u t p u t t e r m i n a l s has exceeded a p p r o x i m a t e l y 6 v o l t s .

To implement IEEE-488 bus c o n t r o l you wi l l g e n e r a l l y need t o have an I E E E 488 i n t e r f a c e a d a p t e r i n your h o s t computer.
