1987FOREWORD
Here for the participants in the "Argyll Colony Plus" Newsletter
Project is a book made up of several Kintyre Rental Lists that were
sent to us by Mr. A. I. B. Stewart, C.B.E B.L. F.S.C. (Scot) of
Campbelltown, Kintyre, Argyll, Scotland. These lists were transcribed
by Mr. Stewart and by Mr. Andrew MeKerral who authored the book Kintyre
in _the Seventeenth Century. The lists pertain to lands held from the
Crown by the Earl and later the Duke of Argyll. The persons listed are
tacksmen who rented from the Campbells. These tacksmen further divided
and rented to tenants. The lists cover from 1505 to 1710
The lists have been retyped and indexed by Dr. Ruby G. Campbell of
Baton Rouge, Louisiana. #arlier Ruby had retyped and indexed the lists
of Islay people. We owe her another big vote of thanks.
Many surnames in these lists are the same as you will find in the
early and later Scot settlers of North Carolina's Cape Fear region. Thi.
is true especially as regards McNeill, McKay, McAllister, McMillan, Camppel 1
Stewart, Reid, etc. Then after 1650 (after the plunder and destruction >.
the Marquis of Montrose and Alastair MacColla-MeDonald followed by the plasuc)
when the Earl of Kintyre brought in Lowlanders we find the surnames M
Hamilton, Cunningham and Montgomery, etc. added.
foore,
It is hoped that these lists may be of help to those trying to find the
place of orgin of their Argyll ancestors.
Mr. Steward has been very active in the Kintyre Antiquarian Society for
many years - as was Mr. MeKerrall before his death. Mr. Stewart is a retired
attorney. He frequently serves as sheriff. We says that his duty docs not
call for boots and six-guns, but for black robes and a wig
he holds court.
thank you.
As a sheriff,
Mr. Stewart is another person to whom we owe a great big

CROWN LANDS OF KINTYRE
1505
The earliest extant list of tenants appears to be in 1505.
Prior to that of course there were Crown Charters
In 1264 it is recorded that the Barl of Mar (Great Chamberlain) had received
20 cows from the rents of Kintyre and had them sent to Galloway for the
shortage of victuals there.
Bruce granted a number of Charters
1, To Neil Oge the lands of Kilmichyll, Drondrayllen, Dunmor, Keylpol
and Reythenan. {Was Neil Oge a McNeill? The nane implies it-]
2. Glenbrechriche and Aulisaye [Ormsary?]
3. The lands of Kintyre.
4. James, the son of Dunleve, seven senemargis and one-half senemargis
of our Lordship of Kintyre to wit, one senemargis of Ardayardill,
one-half senemargis of Ogildaill, one senemargis of Ardinlochie Is.
of Ardineross, 1 1/2 s. Kylcedene, 3/4 5. of Cartgreillane and of
Amgaffs. The 1/4 part and 1/8 part of I S. of Grenane between the
land of the Abbacy of Tona and the land of Ardcardill ts. of
Penigninn(ir) and 1/8 s. of Lagan lying near Penigninn(ir). James
to provide a ship of 26 oars properly furnished for the King's service.
5. Gilerest Macymar Macay, the two Schanmarks of land in Kintyre to wit,
the pennyland of Arydermede, the pennyland of Ballostalfis, the penny-
land of Kyllewlane, and the pennyland of Seskamousky, and to his
younger son Gillichreist and their heirs whom failing to his eldest
son Ymar and his heirs they to provide two archers for the King"
service.
1-4 Robertson Index. An index of missing Charters from lists in the Tower
of London of Charters removed by Edward I, etc. Copies of the two last
Charters exist in the Haddington Collection of MS in the National Library
In 1542 Mackay of Arnegill and Ugadale got a new Charter for their lands
and for the Office of Mair which he has held "ultra Memoriam hominum."
Robert IT in 1376 gave a grant to “our beloved son John de Yle and his
wife our beloved daughter of our lands in Kintyre hzlf our Land.”
In 1432 the King Janes 1 appointed Sir Alexander de Montgomery de Ardy
and Sir Robert Cunningham de Kilmaurs as joint custodians of Kintyre with
custody of the Castles of Sweyn & Skipness, with power to lease out the lands
and keep the rents - 7 years from May 1430. Probably did not last the 7
years as Alexander of the Isles submitted to the King and was pardoned.the Isles was forfeited in 1476 and Kintyre again passed to the
Crown. He got his title and Islay back on the intervention of the Queen
but was specifically excluded from his former lands of Kintyre and Knapdale.
Shortly afterwards Kintyre was erected into a Stewardry, i. e. directly
under the Crown. ‘fhe Steward was Tarlach MacAlexander, head of the
Macalesters of Loup. Charter 10 July 1 liferent of 40 merkland
including the Machquhuirymore of Dounaverty, the Twa Ramills, Edine,
Knockstappilmore, Kiranbeg, Glenemuklach, Kildavy, Polmulyne, Eradell,
Solkauch, Glenahervy, Feadaig Corpaig, Barfarnay, Auchnaglek, Kilmichac!
and Crag.
Seneschal of Kintyre “infra bondas ejusdem a Sannych versus occiden et super
aquam de Sannys ex occidentale parte ejusdem."
The wording is notably different from "all Kintyre” in older Charters which
is usually from the Mull to Altna Sheanach.
[McKerral thinks Sannys is the Machrihanish water and the charter refers
only to South Kintyre, but there seems to me to be a close connection
between Sannych (aquam de Sannys) and Alltnacheanach. ALBS]
In 1499 Colin Mcauchan (McEachran) of Killelan, an old McDonald vassal was
granted a charter confirming him in his office of Mair of Fee (held by
under the MacDonalds) and in the 2 merklands of Killeban (sic) the 2 mkl of
Pennygown, 2 mkl of Gartloskin, and the 2 mkl of Ellarg and Arynaskawach.
In 1507 he got a further grant in liferent of a 12 kland including Domed
Sron, Glenadull - Wochtrath, Tredonyll, Gartnalarg, Querraffour, Largnac
Auchinglauch, Glenramskillmore with a mandate of Chamberlainship of South
Kintyre.
Another of the family Gillespie McEachran had the freehold of Owegill,
Achequhork, Kilbrid, Kynachan, Achenaaslessaige and Ochtorag.
John McBachran in 1501 had a tack of the 12 mkland of Kinloch.
King James IV in 1498 granted to Sir Adam Reid of Starquite the custody of
the fortalice of Ardcardine, the 100 sh land of old extent adjacent to the
same also the 16 mkland of Glencardine adjacent to first mentioned land.
Another charter in 1499 gave Adam Reid 4 mkland of Ardcardine, the 20
mkland of Glencardine, Auchinsaull, Ranydoch, Auchinbrek, Keironasche,
Auchinreoch, Corrymakkaman and Cardoll lying near Arkerden, held by the kiny,
by the forfeitfure of John, Lord of the Isles.
There are no records to show what followers these earlier Lowlanders brought
to Kintyre. [They seem, if they remained, to have been Gaclicised by 1600.]
After the forfeiture of 1493 the Earl of Argyle was appointed Crown
Chamberlain. In 1505 Archibald, Jad Earl, and David Bishop of Argyll
came to Kintyre and at Kilkerran prepared a reatal of Crown Lands in
Kintyre and Accounts From Ist August 1502 to 28th July 1905.In 1506 a new assedation of Kintyre was made by Crown Commissioners. Nost
of the old occupants were allowed to remain.
In 1521 Colin Earl of Argyle was excused paying the Crown Rents from 13th
August 1511 to February 1521 "on account of the wars and the waste of the
Lordship from the time of the late Campaign of Flodden."
In 1525 he submitted accounts. The charge was £1349.11.8 and the discharge
§1390.18.7 showing a deficit of &41.5.11 apparently all in respect of Lands
granted to Alexander of th es. There is no trace of this Grant.
Later accounts were submitted in 1528 and 1531.
There is no further record till 1541. In 1540 by Act of Parliament Kintyre
lands were annexed to the Crown and a new Letting of the lands of Kintyre
was made by a Commission which sat at Saddell Castle in 1541.
In 1542 Alexander, then Master, Later
and Governor of Kintyre with power to
ciar. Dunaverty was occupied by a Royal garrison.
airn, was appointed Ruler
ffice of Sheriff or Justi-
In 1545 a-charter of all the Crown Lands in Kintyre was given to James
McConnyll of Dunnyveg and the Glens. All these lands were incorporated
in a free Barony to be called the Barony of Bar in North Kintyre.
James MeSorley Buy vic Connell in 1597 got a charter of Cullinlongart,
Kilkerane, Ballegrogane, Cardoch, Cattadill and Gartvaine, Claknahavill,
Ramelicheis, Auchgoyn, Killewnane, Coochordull, Auchincork, Auchinslessage,
Glendeill-over in S. Kintyre. le died in 1601, poisoned it is thought, and
his lands were included in the 1607 grant to Argyle.

Do.The lists given above are intended maily to exhibit the place and personal
names which occur in the rentals of 1541. The rents are not included but
e given
in detail for each holding in the Exchequer Rolls. They consisted of money and
produce and in some cases services are also specified. The produce rents comprised
meal, malt, cheese, marts, and wedders. In each case the price of the particular
produce is specified which appears to indicate that either a certain standard of
quality was demanded or that the produce rents could be commuted with money.
Services were specified in the case of the following holdings only: the usual
phrase "cum servitiis, debiti 7
being used: Dewpin (Ranald Moir
McAllester), Artardill (Alexander McAllester of Loupe), Auchnasale (Donald Dow
NeRannald), Ranadale (Gilbreid McMillan) in North Kintyre, and Cattadull, etc.,
(John McMurich) in South Kintyre the last being the old bards lands which with
the harpers (Brouneriken, etc.) are now seen to be paying rent and no longer free-
hold. Kilellan is shown as given free to McEachran for his fee as Mair or Crowner,
and its rent is not specified. The leases were for three years in each case. The
prices quoted were as follows: cheese, 2 shillings per stone; meal, 16 pence the
stone; malt, 5 shillings the boll; marts, 26 shillings and 8 pence each; wedders,
2 shillings each. There is no record in the Exchequer Rolls of the Payment of these
rents to the Crown in subsequent years and in any case, three years later, in 1545,
James MeConnell of Dunnyves and the Glens received a huge grant which must have
included most of the crown lands in Kintyre along with other lands elsewhere, all
of which were incorporated in the free barony of Bar in North Kintyre.
