THE ICS GUIDE TO HELICOPTER / SHIP OPERATIONS latest edition, IS TO BE USED IN ALL OPERATIONS
[For Pilot Embarkation/Disembarkation, receiving stores, crew changes,patient evacuation and any operation with helicopters]

GENERAL.

1 All loose objects in and around the operating area have been secured or removed?
2 All rigging, aerials above or near the operating area have been lowered / removed or
secured?
3 Has a Pennant or Windsock been hoisted where it can be clearly seen by Pilot?

OOW been consulted about the ship's readiness?


Officer in charge on deck is in radio communication with bridge.?
Fire pump(s) are running with adequate fire hoses have been tested ready ?
Portable foam equipment is ready?
DCP Fire Extinguishers handy and ready for use?
Deck party ready and correctly dressed, in position? Wearing high visiblity vest and Safety
Helmet and fire fighters wearing Fire mans outfit
10 Separate rescue party has been detailed, with protective clothing.
11 Fire Hoses pointing away from the operating area in case of inadvertent discharge?
12 Has a rescue party been detailed and in readiness?
13 Is rescue boat prepared and ready for lowering?
14 Is rescue equipment as per ics guide to helicopter /ship operation, chapter 4.7, ready?
15 Has the correct lighting been switched on prior to night operations (ref -ICS guide)
16 Separate rescue party has been detailed, with protective clothing.
17 Has the hook handler been equipped with Helmet, Electrical grade RUBBER gloves and
rubber boots, to prevent static discharge.
18 Access to and the egress from the operating area is free.
LANDING
1 Is deck party aware that Landing is to be made?
2 Is the operating area free of Heavy Seas and Sprays?
3 Have siderails / awnings/stanchions other obstructions etc removed?
4 where applicable portable pipes been removed and ends blanked off?
5 Rope messengers at hand for securing the helicopter, if necessary? NOTE: Only the
helicopter pilot may decide whether or nor to secure the helicopter.
BULK and COMBINATION CARRIERS.

A Surface ventilation to dry bulk cargoes has been stopped, and all hatch openings have
been fully battened down before commencement of the operation
CAUTIONS
DO NOT Touch the helicopter winch wire before it touches deck, due to the static electricity in the wire.
DO NOT Secure helicopter winch wire on deck
DO NOT Walk past the whirling tail propeller of the helicopter.

DO NOT Alter course or speed drastically during landing / take - off and winching operations, unless in an
emergency
