Industrial Equipment
Portugal is a solid producer of all types of industrial machinery and its equipment,
structured cabling, telecommunications appliances, software, professional electronic
equipment and various other electronic components.
At the same time, machinery and tools are one of Portugals most internationally traded
products, representing about 20% of the countrys total foreign trade. Some of the
worlds largest players have already set up their operations in Portugal.
Agrifood
The Portuguese agri-food sector is defined by genuine local products, produced
exclusively in Portugal, which makes them highly competitive abroad, being associated
to healthy dietary habits.
The sector's represents 2 billion Euros of business volume and 16% of the total of the
Portuguese industry). It is also one of the main suppliers of the so-called Mediterranean
Diet, adopted by an increasing number of European consumers.
The investment in new technologies and the development of premium quality products,
with superior validity periods, enabled the production, processing and preservation of
food products destined to more distant clients. The sector has also reinvented its
branding, investing in new packaging, that is not only more attractive but also eco-friendly,
making Portuguese companies in this sector more efficient, while increasing the quality
of its products.
Information Technologies
From financial services, to software, hardware and telecommunications, Portuguese
companies have achieved a high level of excellence and international recognition with
their state-of-the-art products and services. A series of innovating and promising
companies are emerging and many International companies have established near shore
Shared Services Centres and R&D departments in Portugal.
Renewable Energies
Portugal is a successful example when it comes to the generation of renewable energy.
Presently, around 52% of the countrys electricity is generated from renewable sources,
and the target for 2020, is around 60%. Major actions have been taken to reach this
goal, and therefore creating many new business opportunities within a wide range of
renewable and non-pollutant sources of energy. Currently, Portugal is home to the
worlds largest Photovoltaic Central within urban environment and the second largest
wind farm in Europe.
