environment

A group of living things of the same species, living together in a

given area

A group of organisms having the same characteristic and is

capable of reproducing.
Habitat

An area where organisms live to get shelter, food and place to

reproduce.

Ecosystem

B 2 Producer, Consumer And Decomposer

B. Match the following words with its meaning.
Producer

B2
Tiny organisms which use dead organisms as their source of food

An organism which is able to obtain its energy by synthesizing its food from sunlight, water

An organism which gets its energy by eating other organisms

B3

B 3 Type Of Interaction
State the type of interaction of living organism in the table below with the correct word.
Commensalism

Competition

Mutualism
Predator

Brief explanation

Parasitism

Prey-

Type of interaction

An organism that hunts and catches another organism for food.

The interaction between two individuals or two population to get
the essentials for life such as food, water, light, living space and
mates( for animals)
Interaction between two different organisms where both benefit.
Interaction between two different organisms where one benefits and
the other is harmed and may even die.
Interaction between two organisms where one organism gets some
benefits while other does not benefits or suffers any loss.

Answer all the question below.

1. What is obtained by the predator from the prey?
___________________________________________________________________________________
2. Apart from food, what else do the organisms of the same species compete for?
___________________________________________________________________________________
3. State two benefits the staghorn fern and rafflesia get from the interaction.
a) Staghorn fern : To obtain _______________ and ___________________.
b) Rafflesia
: To obtain ________________and ____________________.
4.

a) What type of interaction exist between the butterfly and the flower.
______________________________________________________________________________
b) State the benefit that obtained by

(i) the butterfly from the flower : __________________________________________________

(ii) the flower from the butterfly: ___________________________________________________

C. The diagram below shows the pond habitat consists of water weeds, tadpole, tilapia fish, and egret.

i)

Based on the diagram above complete the table below by counting the number of organisms represented by the
letters P,Q,R and S, and identify these organisms.

ii)

Predict what will happen to the following organisms if the number of tadpoles suddenly decrease due to
disease.

a) Water weeds : _______________________________________________________________________

b) Tilapia fish : ________________________________________________________________________
B4
B4
Relate the species, habitat, population and community with the intrerdependence among the living organism and
environment to create a balance ecosystem through activity.
Aim

: To study species, habitat, population and community in an ecosystem.

Study the diagram below and answer the following questions.

1.

Complete the table below.

HABITAT

COMMUNITY

POPULATION

SPECIES

Pond edge
Water surface
Mid-water level
Pond base

2. How many different species live in the ecosystem?

__________________________________________________________________________________
3. Do all living things depend on one another and the environment to stay a alive? Give your reason.
__________________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
4. Predict what will happen to an ecosystem if one or more species of living things are removed from the
ecosystem.
__________________________________________________________________________________________
__________________________________________________________________________
5. What is the importance of a balance ecosystem?

B 5 Photosynthesis

B5

A. Complete the diagram below to explain the process of photosynthesis

B.
C.
D.
E.
F.
B. Conduct an experiment to determine whether sunlight is required for the process of photosynthesis.
5

Problem statement

Is sunlight required for photosynthesis?

Hypothesis

Plants ____________________carry out photosynthesis without sunlight.

Aim

To investigate whether plants need sunlight to carry out photosynthesis

Variables

Apparatus and
materials
Procedure

2. Responding : ______________________________________
3. Constant
: ______________________________________
Black paper, paper clips, beakers, water, Bunsen burner, boiling tubes, ethanol, iodine
solution, white tile
1. The chosen plant was kept in a dark cupboard for three days
2. A healthy leaf was selected from the plant
3. Half the leaf was clipped, top and bottom, with black paper and paper clips
4. The plant was left under the sun for three hours
5. The leaf was plucked and tested for the presence of starch

Instructions :
Choose one of the following subjects and conduct a forum to discuss it.

1. Importance of the interaction between living organisms and the environment

You can touch on the role of a living organism in its environment and what would happen if the organism
becomes extinct and its effect on the environment. You can use an example of an organism which is extinct
due to man and its effect on the environment
2. The advantages and disadvantages of biological control used in agriculture
Examples of biological control, type of interaction utilized, the advantage of biological control and the
disadvantages of biological control
3. Importance of photosynthesis, effect of development, agriculture, and logging in maintaining a
balanced ecosystem.
The meaning of photosynthesis, its role in a balanced ecosystem if development, the effect on ecosystem if
development, agriculture and logging go unchecked.
Guidance :
1. The forum must be carried out with moderator with three or four panel members.
2. The discussion must only touch the subject above.
3. The moderator should lead and encourage the panel members to discuss the subject matter.
8

4. The discussion should be carried out for 30 minutes and 10 minutes should be given to the audiences to
gives idea or pose questions to the panel members on the subject matter.
Preparation :
The panel members chosen must have a certain speciality based on the subject matter chosen and be given ample
time to do research before the forum is carried out in class.
Marks:
Marks will be given to the moderator, the panel members and audience on the floor, based on their active,
involvement in the forum.
