Students are assumed to have a background of the following topics:


Calculas.
Fourier Transform and Signal Analysis
Analog Communications.
Random Variable and Probability.
Electronics and Circuits.
Modern Digital and Analog Communication Systems, B. P. Lathi.

Analog and Digital Communication Systems. Martin S. Roden, 4th edition.


45 lectures, 50 minutes each (including exams).
32 lectures, 75 minutes each (including exams).

Text book, class handouts, scientific calculator, and an access to a personal


computer.

Classroom with whiteboard, library, and computational facilities.

Course Objectives:
The following basic course objectives are expected to be achieved during the course
Build engineering common sense and insight in dealing with engineering applications.
Understand the basic concepts of Digital Communication Theory.
Build a comprehensive knowledge about Digital Communications.

Course Outcomes and Relation to ABET Program Outcomes:


Students will be expected to develop the following skills/understanding upon the successful
completion of this course:
Understand the main concepts of Digital Communication.
Understand the Digital Communication Systems (ASK, PSK and FSK).
Understand the main laws of RF Power Calculation.
Understand the coded modulation systems.

Calculate the Electric and magnetic fields in space for Modulated Signals.
Calculate the transmitted and received signals under different modulation formats.
Calculate the signal values at different stages in communication systems.
Calculate the noise effect on the received signal under different modulation formats.
Design a simple coded Modulation System.

Differential Digital Modulation techniques.

Band limited channels and spectral analyses of digital signal.

Fading channels.

Coded Modulation. And Spread Spectrum modulation.

Channel Coding: Linear Block Codes, Cyclic Codes, CRC and


Convolutional Codes.
