synchronized arrangement
coupled with hydraulically shifted forward and reverse shuttle clutches
The shuttle is a multi-disc clutch arrangement. The shuttle contains two clutch packs. One clutch
pack on the input shaft for Forward, and another clutch pack on an idler shaft for Reverse. Each
clutch pack contains ten plates and ten discs. The clutches are hydraulically engaged. The clutches
are released by spring force.
Clutch engagement is accomplished by using an electrical harness that is connected to the solenoid
control valve and the direction selector valve. These valves hydraulically engage forward clutch
(5) or reverse clutch (3).
Input shaft assembly (1) sends the power from the torque converter turbine to the forward shuttle
clutch. The input shaft assembly rotates the same direction as the flywheel. Forward drive gear (4)
is fixed to shaft (1) and rotates the same direction as the flywheel. Therefore, the forward shuttle
clutch plates also rotate the same direction at the same speed as the input shaft.
Reverse idler gear (2) is fixed to reverse idler shaft (7). Gear (2) is meshed with gear (4).
Therefore, gear (2) and reverse clutch (3) turn opposite from the input shaft and the torque
converter.
The input shaft assembly provides five internal oil passages. Three internal oil passages are for
lubrication of the clutches. The remaining two internal oil passages are for the engagement of the
forward clutch pack or the reverse clutch pack.
Forward input gear (6) and Reverse input gear (17) are free to rotate on their respective shaft
assembly when both forward and reverse clutch packs are not engaged. The discs rotate with the
input gears.
Reverse shaft (7) provides reverse rotation to countershaft (8) when Reverse clutch (3) is engaged.
The power flows from forward drive gear (4), to reverse idler gear (2), driving reverse input gear
(17) when the reverse clutch pack is engaged.
Countershaft (8) transfers power to the speed range gears on output shaft (16). Drive gear (18) on
the countershaft increases roading in fourth gear to approximately 40 km/h (25 mph). The power
is transferred from the forward input gear (6) or from the reverse idler input gear (17). The gear
that is used depends on the clutch pack that is engaged.
Output shaft (16) carries speed range gears (10), (12), (13), and (15) and synchronizer assemblies
(11) and (14). All of the speed range gears rotate on caged roller bearings on the output shaft.

(24) Blocker pin

The synchronizer assembly consists of two inner synchronizer cones (22). The cones are mounted
to sliding collar (21) by a series of alternating alignment blocker pins (24) and the spring loaded
split pins (23). The inner diameter of sliding collar (21) is splined to output shaft (16). The speed
range gears have matching splines. Synchronizer cups (19) are splined to the speed range gears
and the cups rotate with the speed range gears.
When shift fork (20) moves sliding collar (21) to engage a speed gear, the sliding collar comes in
contact with the shoulder of the blocker pins (24). The force that is exerted on the blocker pins
causes the blocker pin to push the cone against the cup. The assembly of sliding collar (21) and
the output shaft (16) are rotating at the same speed as the speed gear. This results in
synchronization.
If there is a torsional load or mismatch of speeds between the speed range gear and the output
shaft, the shoulder of the blocker pin will prevent the sliding collar from engaging. When the
speeds are synchronized and there is no torsional load or side load on the blocker pin, the sliding
collar will continue to slide as the shifter fork moves.
Split pins (23) will collapse and the pin will act as a locking mechanism in order to keep sliding
collar (21) engaged with output shaft (16).
The four speed shift lever is on the floor. The operator neutralizes the solenoid control valve of the
transmission by depressing the neutralizer button on the shift lever and holding the button. This

shifts the speed range gears. Activating the neutralizer button releases a direction clutch and the
button places the transmission into NEUTRAL position. Now, the operator can select any speed
range gear, even when the vehicle is moving. Once the shift is complete, the neutralizer button
must be released. The speed shift is completed and the direction clutch is engaged again. Power is
sent from the output shaft to the rear axle.
Only one synchronizer assembly can be engaged at a time.
Illustrations 1 and 2 show the actual orientation of the transmission shafts. In the following
explanations, the shafts are shown in a straight line for clarity of power flow. The forward
clutch and reverse clutch may be moved in the illustration to better show gear contact for
direction.

The torque converter turbine drives input shaft assembly (1). The operator moves the direction

Forward input gear (6) transmits the power to drive gear (25), which turns countershaft (8), which
is constantly engaged with the speed range gears. The neutralizer button that is located on the shift
lever must be activated in order to neutralize the solenoid control valve of the transmission. This
engages first speed gear (10) or second speed gear (12) with output shaft (16). Activating the
neutralizer button releases a direction clutch and the button places the transmission into
NEUTRAL. The shift lever can now be moved into first gear or second gear. Shifter fork (20)
slides synchronizer collar (21) to the right so first speed gear (10) engages with output shaft (16).
Also, the shifter fork (20) can slide the synchronized collar (21) to the left so second speed gear
(12) engages with output shaft (16).
If there is no torsional load or mismatch of speeds between the speed gear and the output shaft,
synchronizer assembly (11) will engage the speed gear with the output shaft. Once the shift is
complete, the neutralizer button must be released. The speed shift is completed and the direction
clutch is engaged again. Power is sent from the output shaft to the rear axle.
