INTRODUCTION
This document provides a description for the Lube Oil System for the 215 MW Bauang Diesel
Power Plant, which includes the functions, criteria, details of components, controls and
instrumentations, operating modes, design, safety and maintenance requirements. The system is
shown in Oil Diagram 0-137-755-157/041/163.
1.1
System Functions
The primary functions of the system are as follows:
1.2
1.1.1
To supply lube oil at suitable pressure and temperature to the main engine during start-up
and normal operation.
1.1.2
To provide lubricating oil requirements to the main engine bearings and pistons.
Criteria Requirement
The oil used must reduce friction and wear, must cool engine components and prevent corrosion at
high and low temperature. In addition to this, it must be able to cope with unfavorable combustion
by-products through its neutralization and detergent/dispersant properties.

The two automatic filters remove impurities from the oil. A hydraulically operated motor rotate the
filter element to cycle it into filtering and back flush mode. A part of the filtered oil (3 to 5% of the
filter capacity) is used to back flush part of the full-flow filter elements and for the drive of the
hydraulic motor. The back flush oil with solids from the full-flow chamber is led to the diversion
chamber where it is filtered again before it is led back to the lube oil drain vessel (23V1). The solids
trapped in the diversion chamber can be drained periodically.
Oil flow to the cooler is controlled by a temperature indicating controller (TIC-23103) and valves
receiving signal from a temperature elements located downstream of the oil cooler (23E1).
Make-up for the lube oil system comes from the Cylinder Lube Oil Tank, 0-25V1. Pump (0-25P1)
is provided for pumping fresh lube oil to lube oil tank (23V1). Solenoid valve (LCV 23101) is
installed along the pipeline to control the tank (23V1) level. When tank level is below of the high
level, the solenoid valve LCV 23101 is opened, also when the tank reaches high level, this valve
(LCV 23101) is closed and the pump (0-25P1) is stopped automatically.
The system conditions that will cause an engine tripping are Lube Oil Pressure Low Low (PSLL
23102) and Oil Mist High Concentration in the Engine Crankcase. For system condition that will
open the generator breaker is High High Temperature Lube Oil (TSHH 23102).

The lube oil pump (23P1) is provided with a key actuated local-remote switch at Local
Control Box and an OFF-RUN-START switch in the BJ cabinet and provision for start up in
the OIS.
When the key in the local control box is in the local position, the pump can not be started in
the BJ cubicle.
If starting in the OIS is desired, the key operated control box is by-passed. However the
switch in BJ cubicle must be in the RUN position in order for the pump to start. A
discrepancy alarm will actuate when the key in the local control box is in local.
2.2.3
Alarms
Alarm lamps are provided in the OCW panel to monitor the condition of the Lube Oil
System.
Each engine is provided with the following alarms:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
3.0
MODES OF OPERATION
3.1
Start up
The lubricating oil system can be operated locally (at the BJ panel) or at the Operation Interface
Station. In either case the valve line-up is the same. The suction and discharge isolation valve of
the lube oil pump are open. Check to see that the main lube oil as well as the back up filter are
ready. The oil cooler must also be in ready to operate condition.
3.2
Normal Operation
During normal operation, periodic monitoring of the system must be carried out, such as:
1.
BPPC/SDD-23
2.
3.
4.
Proper operation of the main lube oil filter by checking the filter rotation indicator.
Checking the differential pressure across the filter.
5.
While most of the operating parameters can be verified at the Operator Interface Station (OIS), it is
good practice to check them locally. This will give the operator a chance to check for any oil leaks
in the system.
3.3
Shutdown
The Lube Oil System will not be expected to be shutdown during plant operation. If the engine is
shutdown and standby for six (6) hours, lube oil pump (23P1) can be shutdown by placing its
control switch to OFF position at the BJ panel.
4.0
SAFETY PRECAUTION
4.1
Repair all leaks immediately and clean oil spills to prevent slippery floor.
4.2
Direct exposure of oil to heat can cause ignition (oil with low volatility).
4.3
4.4
5.0
MAINTENANCE
5.1
Preventive Maintenance
The following should be done periodically on the lube oil pump/motor assembly
1.
2.
3.
4.
Visually inspect all flanges, fittings, connection of piping and instrumentations for sign of
leaks.
