15.1

DESIGN

Pressure vessels shall be designed in accordance with British standard, PD

5500, DEP 31.22.10.32- Gen, specification T-13.376.900 and supplementary
requirements as defined in the EDRS and Project documents included in Part V &
VI.
Shell and tube heat exchangers shall be designed, thermally and mechanically, in
accordance with TEMA edition 8, DEP 31.21.01.30-Gen, T-13.376.902, T13.376.908 and PD 5500, together with additional requirements defined in the
EDRS and Project documents included in Part V & VI. Configurations for most of
the shell and tube exchangers are included in Part VI, however vendors shall be
required to check and guarantee exchanger performance.
Air cooled heat exchangers shall be designed in accordance with ASME VIII Div
1, ISO 13706, T-13.376.908 (thermal and hydraulic design), T-13.376.901 and T13.376.904. Vendors may use proprietary methods for thermal design, however
the designs shall be verified against calculation methods specified in T13.376.908 and, in case of deviation, the discrepancies shall both be clarified and
agreed with Company or the most conservative rating shall govern.
The air cooler design shall permit all coolers to be accommodated in the available
space. For layout considerations relating to hot air recirculation, refer to Part VII,
Chapter 1.
Heat exchangers other than shell and tube and air coolers shall be designed and
manufactured in accordance with the requirements of the EDRS.
For deviation to the use of prescribed codes reference is made to Part III,
Chapter 2, paragraph 2.6.6.

15.2

INSPECTION AND TESTING

Inspection and testing shall comply with British standard PD 5500 and ASME VIII
Div 1 as applicable. The required extent of inspection is dependent on category
of construction, which is defined in the EDRS, and applicable standards and
specifications included in Part V. Further information is found in Part IV, Chapter
6-Quality Assurance
Testing of air coolers shall meet the requirements of the EDRS and shall include
a shop run-in, with recording of vibration, noise and an air flow versus fan power
test for each nominally different bay.

15.3

CERTIFICATION
The Vendor shall also obtain the PD 5500 form X approval certificate for design
and manufacture. In the case of ASME VIII items, the vendor shall comply with
the requirements of Part IV, Chapter 6- Quality Assurance
In situations where the ASME pressure vessel is not intended to be code
stamped either with U1 or U2 ASME stamp symbols, each vessel nevertheless
shall have its design verified and be inspected during fabrication under the survey

of a competent third party inspecting authority (TPIA). Contractor shall check and
confirm with the Local Authority of Qatar whether the ASME code stamp is
required for ASME equipment. Contractor shall also ensure compliance with any
inspection requirements of the Local Authority of Qatar.
Further information can be found in Part I, Chapter 4.2 - Laws and Regulations
and Part IV, Chapter 6 - Quality Assurance

15.4

OTHER REQUIREMENTS
Other documents applicable to the design, manufacture and testing of pressure
vessels and heat exchangers are listed on the EDRSs.
The thermal and hydraulic design of shell and tube exchangers and reboiler
kettles shall be carried out using calculation methods specified on the Project
documents. The results of Vendors proprietary thermal/hydraulic designs of air
cooled heat exchangers shall be verified against calculation methods specified by
Company. In case of deviation, the discrepancies shall both be clarified and
agreed with Company or the most conservative rating shall govern.

15.5

EQUIPMENT IN LOW TEMPERATURE SERVICE

Where the lower design temperature of equipment is governed by depressurising
or vacuum conditions, the lower design temperature shall be applied coincident
with the full design pressure, under the premise that the systems can be repressurised whilst at lower design temperature.

15.6

AIR COOLER POWER CONSUMPTION TARGETS

For each Air Cooler unit, the maximum fan power consumption is stated on the
EDRS. These target numbers have been used in the utility balance for the plant.
Contractor should therefore be aware that the utility balance on the plant should
be maintained and that if a target is exceeded on a particular unit then this should
be counter-balanced elsewhere by consumption for another unit being less than
the target.
