By Jade Lemmon

By Chloe Sierks

Prom season brings many

different feelings and emotions for students at Rock
Port High School. For girls
the feeling is mainly anxiety as they begin to make all
of the preparations needed
to make prom night absolutely perfect. A common
preparation for prom, that
sometimes starts as early as
February, is indoor tanning.
Indoor tanning often bears
the brunt of criticism because of the risk of developing skin cancer due to tanning beds. But how much
of this criticism is actually
a threat to indoor tanners?
Millions of people throughout the country use tanning beds to have a kissed
by the sun look, or to increase their level of vitamin D, which is produced
when skin is exposed to
ultraviolet light found in
tanning beds and the sun.
Many dermatologists and
health organizations will ar-

gue against the claims from

tanning bed manufacturers
that indoor tanning boosts
your mood, relieves joint pain
and even makes your skin
look younger. But is there
some truth to the claims?
Although some of the
claims may in fact be true,
they dont reduce the severe risks that come with
using tanning beds for an
unhealthy amount of time.
According to the American
Academy of Dermatology,
using an indoor tanning bed
before the age of 35 can increase your chance of developing melanoma, which
is the deadliest form of skin
cancer, by 59%. Women
younger than 30 who use
tanning beds are six times
more likely to develop skin
cancer. But all indoor tanning bed users know that
there is a slight chance of
developing skin cancer. It is
probably the number one reason that these users receive
criticism from the public.

Why wait for summer

However, there are more

negative side effects to indoor
tanning besides the risk of
cancer. Studies have shown
that exposure to UV radiation during indoor tanning
damages the DNA in the skin
cells. Excessive exposure can
lead to premature skin aging,
immune suppression, and
eye damage, including cataracts and ocular melanoma.
This obviously isnt saying
that every individual who
uses an indoor tanning bed is
going to develop skin cancer,
or even see the other side effects. These side effects, however, should not be dismissed
and indoor tanning should be
used with caution and care.
It is suggested that you wait
36-48 hours between tanning
sessions to allow your tan
to develop and to decrease
the amount of UV exposure.
Once you have developed a
tan, you should not continue to tan every day, but instead, once or twice a week.

What will you miss

about high school?

Performing at half time

during football games and
participating in marching
band competitions.

What is your most embarrassing moment?

My junior year in P.E., we were learning how to swing dance. Mr.

Shineman wanted to demonstrate a flip so I was his partner. Long
story short, I almost kicked him in the head.
Advice to Underclassmen: Take advantage of every opportunity
that comes along, because I guarantee that you wont get those opportunities once you leave high school. Also make as many memories
as you can here in high school.
What is your favorite memory from high school?

My freshman year hoops routine. It was my first homecoming routine

and I was so excited. The best part was hearing the crowd cheer.
That was the feeling that kept me motivated to try out for the next
year.

Freshman pole vaulter Jentry Freemyer soars over the bar

during Rock Port Relays. Rock Port Relays were held in
Maryville, Mo., at NWMSU this year due to the resurfacing
of the track in Rock Port. This was Jentrys first time pole
vaulting at a track meet, but she has been to Just Vault in
Kansas City to get help with it and practice it. Jentrys favorite thing about pole vault is the satisfaction she gets when
making it over the bar. Jentry got 3rd at the track meet with
a jump of 7. Photo and caption by Erika Dietze.
