Cognitivebiasesaretendenciestothinkincertainwaysthatcanleadtosystematicdeviationsfroma
"standardofrationality"orgoodjudgment,andareoftenstudiedinpsychologyandbehavioraleconomics.
Althoughtherealityofthesebiasesisconfirmedbyreplicableresearch,thereareoftencontroversiesabout
howtoclassifythesebiasesorhowtoexplainthem.[1]Someareeffectsofinformationprocessingrules(i.e.
mentalshortcuts),calledheuristics,thatthebrainusestoproducedecisionsorjudgments.Sucheffectsare
calledcognitivebiases.[2][3]Biaseshaveavarietyofcognitive("cold"),suchasmentalnoise,[4]or
motivational("hot")explanations,suchaswhenbeliefsaredistortedbywishfulthinking.Botheffectscan
bepresentatthesametime.[5][6]
Therearealsocontroversiesastowhethersomeofthesebiasescountasuseless,irrationalorwhetherthey
resultinusefulattitudesorbehavior.Forexample,whengettingtoknowothers,peopletendtoaskleading
questionswhichseembiasedtowardsconfirmingtheirassumptionsabouttheperson.Thiskindof
confirmationbiashasbeenarguedtobeanexampleofsocialskill:awaytoestablishaconnectionwiththe
otherperson.[7]
Theresearchonthesebiasesoverwhelminglyinvolveshumansubjects.However,someofthefindingshave
appearedinnonhumananimalsaswell.Forexample,hyperbolicdiscountinghasalsobeenobservedin
rats,pigeons,andmonkeys.[8]
