The Power of Music: Mind Control by

Rhythmic Sound
By R. Douglas Fields | October 19, 2012

New Orleans, October 16, 2012 -You

walk into a bar and music is thumping. All heads are bobbing and feet tapping in synchrony.
Somehow the rhythmic sound grabs control of the brains of everyone in the room forcing
them to operate simultaneously and perform the same behaviors in synchrony. How is this
possible? Is this unconscious mind control by rhythmic sound only driving our bodily
motions, or could it be affecting deeper mental processes?
The mystery runs deeper than previously thought, according to psychologist Annett
Schirmer reporting new findings today at the Society for Neuroscience meeting in New
Orleans. Rhythmic sound not only coordinates the behavior of people in a group, it also
coordinates their thinkingthe mental processes of individuals in the group become
synchronized.
This finding extends the well-known power of music to tap into brain circuits controlling
emotion and movement, to actually control the brain circuitry of sensory perception. This
discovery helps explain how drums unite tribes in ceremony, why armies march to bugle

and drum into battle, why worship and ceremonies are infused by song, why speech is
rhythmic, punctuated by rhythms of emphasis on particular syllables and words, and
perhaps why we dance.
Schirmer and her graduate student Nicolas Escoffier from the University of Singapore first
tested subjects by flashing a series of images on a video monitor and asked them to quickly
identify when an image was flipped upside down. While participants focused on this task, a
synthetic drumbeat gently tapped out a simple four-beat rhythm in the background,
syncopated by skipping the fourth beat of each measure.

The results showed

that when the image was flashed on that missed beat, the subjects identified the inverted
image much faster than when the image was flashed at times out of synch with the beat or
when the images were presented in silence. Somehow, the brains decision making was
accelerated by the external auditory rhythm and heightened at precise points in synchrony
with the beat. Since the power of rhythm in boosting cognitive performance was evident on
the missing beat when no sound was presented, the effect could not have had anything to
do with the sound of the drumbeat acting as a stimulus. Mental processing must have fallen
into a rhythm of heightened expectation and superior performance on the anticipated beat.
Next the researchers attached electrodes to the scalp of such subjects to determine if the
brains electrical activity was somehow affected by the rhythm of the sound. The EEG
recording detects the combined electrical activity of thousands of neurons working together
in the cerebral cortex. Just like the roar of a crowd at a baseball game, waves of electrical
activity in the brain are generated when individual neurons in the cerebral cortex are
combined in action. The EEG recordings showed that the waves of brain activity (alpha and

beta waves) became synchronized around the auditory rhythm. That is, the ongoing
oscillations of brain waves became phase shifted so that the peak of the wave always
occurred at a precise point relative to the next beat in the drum rhythm. Rhythmic sound
synchronizes brain waves.

The brain wave recordings also revealed

a more surprising effect of rhythmic sound on brain function. Any sensory stimulus, such as
seeing a picture or hearing a sound, will generate a brief brain wave in the region of cerebral
cortex where such information is received and processed, much like the crack of a bat at
home plate causes an eruption of cheers in a stadium. The researchers found that the
sensory-evoked brain wave measured at the back of the skull over the region where vision is
processed, peak each time the image was presented, but when the image was presented
simultaneously with the missing drumbeat, the electrical response evoked by the picture
was bigger than when the image was presented out of rhythm or flashed on the screen in
silence. These visual circuits are more responsive when the image appears in synch with the
auditory rhythm.
This region of the brain processes the earliest steps in vision, the circuits that detect visual
input. This means that our perception of the external world entering our mind through our
eyes is affected by the rhythm of what we hear. Something seen at a point precisely in beat
with an auditory rhythm is more likely to be perceived than if it appears out of synch with
the rhythm. This gating of visual input by auditory rhythm does not require a prolonged
meditation on the rhythm to cause the person to enter into some sort of a trance-like state;
the effects are nearly instantaneous. Within a few measures of music your brain waves
start to get in synch with the rhythm, Schirmer says.

Steven Pinker has said that music is auditory cheesecake, with no particular advantage in
the evolution of our species. Schirmer feels their new results do not support that view.
Rhythm facilitates our interpersonal interactions in term of not only how we move, but
how we talk and think, she concludes. Rhythm facilitates people interacting by
synchronizing brain waves and boosting performance of perception of what the other
person is saying and doing at a particular point in time. Rhythm, whether the lyrics to a
song or the meter of a poem facilitates language processing, she concludes, and she is now
undertaking new experiments to further test this idea. When people move in synchrony
they are more likely to perceive the world in synchrony, so that would facilitate their ability
to interact.

What is Brain washing

The term "brainwashing" came into common language through the work of American
journalist Edward Hunter who was an expert of Oriental issues; the very word being the
direct translation of Chinese "hsi-nao". By "hsi-nao" the Chinese meant certain techniques in
dealing with adversaries and/or training of officials. To the Western usage the term
"brainwashing" spread in the 1950s through several publications depicting the treatment of
American soldiers at Chinese prison camp during the Korean War 1950-1953.
Below is a list of the usual brainwashing/mind control techniques used in schools, hospitals,
army, religious cults, totalitarian states; with political prisoners and dissidents, mentally
insane, some versions of psychoterapy, etc., etc. "Indoctrination" is a more slight and more
subliminal form of brainwashing (e.g. commercials). However, these concepts are nothing
short of controversial and open to various interpretations, which should be kept in mind
while perusing the Web sources below.
Judging by the extremely diverse material on the subject found from the Net, the funny
thing about the term "brainwashing" itself is that it can be handily appropriated by just
anyone -- whether they were right-wing or left-wing, religious people or anti-cultists -- to
support their claims of their opponents (supposedly using these "brainwashing" techniques)
being miserable, no-good wretches (see: propaganda). I became not a little bit cynical after
wallowing through tons of Web pages by religious bigots, downright wackos (most usual
was the claim of government having secret mind control experiments with microwaves) and
so-called (American right-wing fascist/racist) patriots, but tried to put here those that I
found useful or at least interesting myself. (In other words, after browsing an otherwise
decent and respectable-looking page for a while you might start smelling a rat.) I can't
guarantee the information found from some of these pages is totally unprejudiced or
scientifically verifiable under skeptical observation. So, it's up to you to decide whether to
believe them or not.

1) HYPNOSIS - Inducing a high state of suggestibility, often thinly disguised as relaxation or

meditation.
a. Repetitive Music (most likely with a beat close to the human heart 45 to 72 beats per
minute). Most likely used during "study sessions" as the teacher will say the music helps you
relax and concentrate better!
b. Voice Roll -- A "voice roll" is a patterned, paced style used by hypnotists when inducing a
trance. It is also used by many lawyers, several of whom are highly trained hypnotists, when
they desire to entrench a point firmly in the minds of the jurors. A voice roll can sound as if
the speaker were talking to the beat of a metronome or it may sound as though he were
emphasizing every word in a monotonous, patterned style. The words will usually be
delivered at the rate of 45 to 60 beats per minute, maximizing the hypnotic effect.
c. Room "Feel" - The way a room feels is essential to hypnotizing unknowing subjects. It
needs special lighting, florescent lights are best because they aren't too dim, but aren't too
harsh. Also, Room Temp helps a bit, usually a little cooler than normal room temperature.
You need to have the unknowing subjects very relaxed, perhaps even close to falling asleep.
2) PEER GROUP PRESSURE - Suppressing doubt and resistance to new ideas by exploiting
the need to belong.
3) "LOVE BOMBING" - Creating a sense of family through physical touch, thought & feeling
sharing and emotional bonding.
4) REJECTION OF OLD VALUES - Accelerating acceptance of new lifestyle by constantly
denouncing former beliefs and values.
5) CONFUSING DOCTRINE - Encouraging blind acceptance and rejection of logic through
complex lectures on an incomprehensible doctrine.
6) METACOMMUNICATION - Implanting subliminal messages by stressing certain key words
or phrases in long, confusing lectures.
7) REMOVAL OF PRIVACY - Achieving loss of ability to evaluate logically by preventing
private contemplation.
8) DISINHIBITION - Encouraging child-like obedience by orchestrating child-like behaviour
9) UNCOMPROMISING RULES - Inducing regression and disorientation by soliciting
agreement to seemingly simple rules which regulate mealtimes, bathroom breaks and use
of medications.
10) VERBAL ABUSE - Desensitizing through bombardment with foul and abusive language.
(Physical abuse, such as torture, is the more extreme form of this.)

11) SLEEP DEPRIVATION AND FATIGUE - Creating disorientation and vulnerability by

prolonging mental an physical activity and withholding adequate rest and sleep.
12) DRESS CODES - Removing individuality by demanding conformity to the group dress
code.
13) CHANTING OR SINGING - Eliminating non-cult ideas through group repetition of mindnarrowing chants or phrases.
14) CONFESSION - Encouraging the destruction of individual ego through confession of
personal weaknesses and innermost feelings of doubt.
15) FINANCIAL COMMITMENT - Achieving increased dependence on the group by 'burning
bridges' to the past, through the donation of assets.
16) FINGER POINTING - Creating a false sense of righteousness by pointing to the
shortcomings of the outside world.
17) ISOLATION - Inducing loss of reality by physical separation from family, friends, society
and rational references.
18) CONTROLLED APPROVAL - Maintaining vulnerability and confusion by alternately
rewarding and punishing similar actions.
19) CHANGE OF DIET - Creating disorientation and increased susceptibility to emotional
arousal by depriving the nervous system of necessary nutrients through the use of special
diets and/or fasting. Also applying drugs for these purposes fall in this category.
20) GAMES - Inducing dependence on the group by introducing games with obscure rules.
21) NO QUESTIONS - Accomplishing automatic acceptance of beliefs by discouraging
questions.
22) GUILT - Reinforcing the need for 'salvation' by exaggerating the sins of the former
lifestyles.
23) FEAR - Maintaining loyalty and obedience to the group by threatening soul, life or limb
for the slightest 'negative' thought, word or deed.
Three Principles of Re-Education
1) REPETITION - Going through the same subject over and over again until it is known by
heart.
2) ACTIVITY PEDAGOGICS - The subjects are never left alone nor give any private time of
their own, they are always in activity.

3) CRITICISM AND SELF-CRITICISM - The subjects are supposed to feel uncertain; under the
constant threat of being humiliated and despised.
In the Korean War the "criticism and self-criticism" sessions held for the American prisoners
of war by the Chinese clearly had deeper effects than the POWs could initially comprehend,
and when they found out, it was too late. In the beginning many prisoners found this whole
procedure just childish, and were inclined to take it merely as something of a joke, but
without them being able to realize it, the situation of being subjected constantly to the
criticism of one's comrades became humiliating.
That a grown-up person should publicly discuss one's habits or inclinations -- some of them
of very private nature -- confess one's faults, receive strong criticism for insignificant
misdemeanours, will not be indeed in the course of time anything to be considered childish
or playful: it simply will be experienced as insulting. This continuing feeling of humiliation
became crucial in the gradual psychological break-up of the prisoners' personalities.
Furthermore, this ongoing process of "criticism and self-criticism" was bound to cause
mistrust for one's own comrades: it was the tactics of "divide and conquer" as the ancient
Romans would have called it. ("Criticism and self-criticism" were also widely applied during
China's "Cultural Revolution" starting in 1966, as a method of "re-education".)

Remote Viewing & Remote Influencing

by Jim Fallon
Remote viewing is a "mental projection" with your mind to another person or place and observing
with your inner eyes what is taking place there, or what a person is doing and/or the details of a
distant location. It is a form of telepathy or thought transference, which is the communication of
impressions from one mind to another. This technique allows one to tune into the thoughts,
feelings, desires and awareness of another person. Remote influencing is the ability to project your
own thoughts, feelings, and desires to influence another person.
How does it work?
Serge King, in his book, Mastering Your Hidden Self (1985), talks about this. "... We remain in contact
with everything we sense by means of 'sticky' aka threads, like drawn out strands of bubble gum,
that never break and never get tangled. Every time we renew contact, another thread is formed, so
that we are connected to certain people and places by cords rather than threads. In addition, by the
power of thought we have the ability to send out an 'aka finger' to places or people we have never
been in contact with, and thereby seek out information or have an influence."
The basics of the technique presented here uses the third principle of Huna, "Energy Flows Where
Attention Goes." It also uses Piko Piko breathing to energize the "third eye," and intent and
visualization to help reinforce the Aka thread, by visualizing an aka link from one Huna power center
to another, to establish a "communications" link. This allows information to be received and
"transmitted."
In Remote viewing, the mind subjectively (non-physically) detects subjective information about a
subject, and then converts that information into a form that you can understand, such as a mental
image, or words, or a feeling. It is important when using the technique that all information and
impressions are not to be discarded.
The mental image (of what you remotely view) is not the actual communication. It is the end result
of a mental process, just as the words or pictures on the computer monitor are the result of your
instructions (given via the keyboard and the mouse) interacting with the word processing (or image

processing) program, which then interacts with the computer hardware to produce light and dark
pixels that you recognize as words and images.
The technique:
Piko Piko:
Remote influencing:
Inhale with your attention on your navel. Visualize what you are trying to do, or the result of what
you want at the navel. Exhale with your attention at your forehead, about 1 to 2 inches behind the
forehead. Visualize that this energy radiates out, like an aka finger or "thread" going to the other
person's forehead. As you visualize this hold the image of what you're trying to do. Send it out in one
strong intense vibration with the exhale breath.
Remote viewing or receiving:
This is the reverse of the manner in which the signal was sent out. Inhale, as you see the aka finger
attached to the persons forehead. Exhale, and bring the attention to your navel. Visualize
information coming inward towards you through the aka finger, coming inward towards the navel
centering at the navel.
Remote broadcasting:
Rather than send the vibration out of the forehead, bring it up to the top of your head. Hold the
image at the navel on the inhale, on the exhale, attention is brought to the top of the head, and see
the energy spreading out like a cone. You can work with any single aspect described above or
combine them in various ways for many purposes. When finished with any of the techniques, just
visualize that the Aka cord is dissolving.

Neurolinguistic Programming
Definition
Neurolinguistic programming (NLP) is aimed at enhancing the healing process by changing the consci
ous and subconscious beliefs ofpatients about themselves, their illnesses, and the world. These limiti
ng beliefs are "reprogrammed" using a variety of techniques drawnfrom other disciplines including h
ypnotherapy and psychotherapy.

Purpose
Neurolinguistic programming has been used to change the limiting beliefs of patients about their pro
spects of recovery from a wide varietyof medical conditions including Parkinson's disease, AIDS, migr
aines, arthritis, and cancer. Practitioners claim to be able to cure mostphobias in less than one hour,
and to help in making lifestyle changes regarding exercise, diet, smoking, etc. NLP has also been use
dto treat allergies. In other fields, claimed benefits include improved relationships, communication,
motivation, and business performance.
Description
Origins
NLP was originally developed during the early 1970s by linguistics professor John Grinder and psycho
logy and mathematics studentRichard Bandler, both of the University of California at Santa Cruz.
Studying the wellknown psychotherapist Virginia Satir, the hypnotherapist Milton Erickson, the anthropologist Gregor
y Bateson, andothers whom they considered "charismatic superstars" in their fields, Grinder and Ban
dler identified psychological, linguistic andbehavioral characteristics that they said contributed to th
e greatness of these individuals. On the other hand, they found that personsexperiencing emotional
difficulties could be similarly identified by posture, breathing pattern, choice of words, voice tone, ey
emovements, body language, and other characteristics.
Grinder and Bandler then focused on using these indicators to analyze and alter patterns of thought
and behavior. After publishing theirfindings in two books in 1975, Grinder and Bandler parted compa
ny with themselves, with a number of other collaborators, and with theUniversity of California, conti
nuing their work on NLP outside the formal world of academia. As a result, NLP split into a number o
fcompeting schools.
Popularized by television "infomercial" personality Anthony Robbins and others, NLP was quickly ado
pted in management and selfimprovement circles. During the 1990s, there was growing interest in NLP's healing potential.
In a healthcare context, practitioners of neurolinguistic programming first seek to identify the negative attitude
s and beliefs with which aclient has been "programmed" since birth. This is accomplished by asking q
uestions and observing physical responses such as changesin skin color, muscle tension, etc. Then, a
wide variety of techniques is employed to "reprogram" limiting beliefs. For example, clientswith chro
nic illness such as AIDS or cancer might be asked to displace the despair and loss of identity caused b
y the disease byvisualizing themselves in vigorous health. Treatment by NLP practitioners is often of
shorter duration than that of other alternativepractitioners, but NLP selfhelp seminars and courses can be quite expensive.
For those who wish to try selftreatment with NLP, a wide variety of books, audio tapes, and videos are available.
Precautions
NLP is particularly popular in the self-improvement and careerdevelopment fields, and some trainers and practitioners have littleexperience in its use for healing. P
ractitioners should be specifically asked about this.

Because NLP is intended to enhance the healing process, it should not be used independently of oth
er healing methods. In all cases ofserious illness, a physician should be consulted.
