and the comprehensive warranty restarting for a further 6 months from when the intervention is completed.

Heat pumps as technology of excellence for the future.

Energy savings thanks to the exploitation of energy accumulated by the
environment.
Reduction of CO2 emissions in the atmosphere.
Reduction of dependency from fossil energy sources.
Use of only electric energy which, in the future, will be increasingly produced
through alternative sources.

Our planet holds significant amountings of heat which - if properly managed - represent a practically inexhaustible
source of clean energy. Over the last few years, in view of the growing awareness of issues such as environmental
comfort and energy savings, we have witnessed the continuous search for alternative solutions to traditional
heating systems, able to make use of these so called clean energies and thus disenfranchise from the use of non
renewable and highly polluting fossil energies.
An actual challenge towards a sustainable energy development.
Heat pumps have been included within the new RES European directive promoting energy from renewable
sources, as a mature technology able to significantly contribute to energy savings and the climate protection
objectives set by the EU, which are calling for 20% reduction in greenhouse gases; 20% reduction in energy
consumption; development of renewable energy sources up to 20% of the overall energy consumption, all by the
2020 deadline.
Heat pumps are therefore increasingly gaining ground as a great alternative to traditional heating
systems as they are capable of addressing the new comfort needs using renewable energy such as
the heat contained in air, water or soil, for heating, cooling and for the production of domestic hot
water.
Rhoss, with over 40 years of experience in the sector and its continuous commitment to innovation, also supported
by its research and development laboratory, has decided to seize this important challenge, offering with
this catalogue solutions where high performance heat pumps become a fundamental part of the
heating system, thus replacing or integrating traditional heat generators and
being perfectly able to give an important contribution to environmental
protection and energy sustainability.

70%
A heat pump takes approx. 70%
of the necessary energy from the
environment, at no cost, and requires
the integration of only 30% electricity,
covering 100% of system requirements.
This energy can be taken from the
outdoor air, from water (water bed, river
or lake), or from the ground through
heat exchangers. The heat pump
takes the extracted heat to a higher
temperature level suitable for heating
needs.

Nature as an inexhaustible source of clean energy.

Heat pumps as heating system able to make the best
use of it!
Heat pumps make it possible to use the free heat
provided by the sun and naturally contained in air, water
and ground. Let us see how:

Energy recovery from air

Outdoor air is always available and has no

constraints, that is why recovering energy
exactly from air is the most common solution.
Thus air cooled heat pumps are used, of simple
installation hence not cumbersome from the
point of view of installation costs, and with good
efficiency even at low outdoor air temperature.

Energy recovery from water

Energy may be recovered from water, exploiting

the natural heat of lakes, wells and groundwater.
Water is drawn from the available basin through
a circulation pump and conveyed to the heat
pump, which recovers its heat.
Water is then conveyed back into the basin
through an absorbing well, which must be
at least 10 metres from the drawing point to
prevent mixing phenomena.
Groundwater temperatures remain more or less
constant and relatively high throughout the year
and this allows the heat pump to maintain good
performance values throughout the season of
use.

16

Energy recovery from the ground

Energy recovery from the ground through horizontal probes

This solution is the least widespread since

it requires high initial investment costs due
to the installation of horizontal or vertical
geothermal probes to exploit the heat
contained in the subsoil. A geothermal
collector laid horizontally or vertically in the
ground and crossed by a heat transfer fluid
(glycol water) absorbs heat from the ground
and transfers it (winter operation) through
the refrigerant circuit inside the house
thanks to the existing distribution systems,
radiators, fan coil units or radiant panels.
Laying horizontal probes (typically at 1m
depth) requires surfaces between 2 and 3
times larger than the surface to be heated,
whereas laying vertical probes, consisting
of two U-pipes requires smaller spaces but
involves deep drilling, typically between 30
and 100m.

solutions and comprehensive systems for
heating, cooling and domestic hot water
production of the home.
From the simplest solution where the heat
pump autonomously meets the house's
heating demand, to the most advanced
solutions equipped with intelligent
regulation for centralised management
of the entire system and to meet heating,
cooling, dehumidification and domestic
hot water production needs all year round.
All that with a view to addressing in the
most adequate manner the various system
engineering needs, either in new or
existing buildings, optimising efficiency and
ease of installation.
Below are some examples of the solutions
offered.

19

Solutions with heat pumps.

a. Heating with radiators.

Ideal solution in renovations.

Air cooled, high temperature reversible heat pumps.
No additional control with respect to the existing one on the machine.
Set-point compensation based on actual ambient load (Adaptive Function Plus) or based on
outdoor air temperature.
Management of supplementary electrical heater.
Management of the 3-way diverter valve for DHW production.
Simple solution, suitable for restructuring existing buildings when one wishes to modernise the plant replacing the boiler with no need to replace the
radiators. In this case the use of air-cooled, high temperature heat pumps (up to 60C water produced) is the ideal solution to assure heating and
possibly domestic hot water production all year round. The control is in fact able to manage a 3-way diverter valve; through a simple contact a signal
may be transmitted for switching the valve on or off the DHW system based on the specific needs.

b. Heating/cooling with fan coil units.

Ideal solution both for renovations and new buildings.

High or medium temperature reversible air or water cooled heat pumps.
No additional control with respect to the existing one on the machine.
Set-point compensation based on actual ambient load (Adaptive Function Plus) or based on
outdoor air temperature.
Management of supplementary electrical heater. *
Management of the 3-way diverter valve for DHW production.
Economical and easy to install solution.
The use of air or water cooled reversible heat pumps coupled with fan coil systems allows one to heat or cool rooms always assuring the utmost
comfort. It is also possible to cool and heat through the radiant system, but in this case terminal management is independent from unit control and is
the user's responsibility.
Also in this case, moreover, the unit control is able to manage a 3-way diverter valve for domestic hot water production with priority logic over heating.

* Excluding the Y-M.I.C.H. range.

Complete boiler replacement.
High or medium temperature reversible air or water cooled heat pumps.
Advanced control able to manage in an intelligent manner all system components and any
external integrations.
Possibility to independently manage several areas.
Set-point compensation based on actual ambient load (Adaptive Function Plus) or based on
outdoor air temperature (optional).
Module for domestic hot water preparation through instantaneous plate heat exchanger:
Assures domestic hot water production with limited scale formation and at the temperature set by the user.
Utmost guarantee of hygiene and performance; no legionella issues.
Great thermal exchange potentiality for further energy savings.
Solution suitable for the renovation of existing buildings in case one should wish to completely replace the boiler both for heating and domestic hot
water production and possibly integrate cooling in the plant via fan coil units. The system control optimally manages enabling or disabling the heat
pump in summer or winter mode to meet the system's demands for heating or cooling and domestic hot water production. The technical water tank
may be brought up to temperature also thanks to the energy contribution from solar panels. In the latter case, in fact, intelligent regulation manages the
tank's internal temperature by preferring solar energy to reach the desired set-point, and only use the heat pump or any integration electrical heaters if
needed.

Suitable solution for new buildings where one wishes to implement low temperature installations both for heating and cooling the building using the
energy contained in the air (in the case of air cooled heat pump) or underground (in the case of water cooled/geothermal heat pump) to supply the heat
pump, and the energy of the sun to heat the domestic hot water buffer tank. An effective combination of different renewable energy sources supplying a
low temperature system to ensure savings on the electricity bill and absolute environmental friendliness!
With this solution it is not only possible to heat by radiant panels but also to cool, because the control is able to handle room dehumidification by
activating the dedicated fan-coil thanks to the area user terminals equipped with temperature and humidity probe. Therefore effective and precise
control, which guarantees comfort and always assures maintaining the desired hygrothermal conditions, avoiding problems connected to the formation
of condensation on surfaces.

Integration of the heat pump in an existing system already fitted with a boiler.
Medium or high temperature reversible heat pumps.
Advanced control able to manage heat pump or boiler operation in an intelligent manner and
according to economic convenience logic.
Possibility to manage cooling through fan coil units.
Set-point compensation based on actual ambient load (Adaptive Function Plus) or based on
outdoor air temperature.
Solution suited to existing buildings where there is already a boiler, which one does not wish to eliminate, and which provides both heating and
domestic hot water production. Integrating a heat pump in the existing system is convenient and quick and allows one to reduce consumption and
polluting gas emissions. The control logic will handle heat pump or boiler switch on for heating based on convenience logics. Domestic hot water
production, however, will be wholly controlled by the boiler. If the installation also includes fan coil units, the control will also be able to switch heat
pump operation to chiller mode, thus handling summer cooling of rooms in a specific area.

KTTZ/KTTUZ

Ideal solution in new buildings.

Ecological, air or water-cooled EXPsystems polyvalent units.
Advanced control able to manage in an intelligent manner all system components and any
external integrations.
Suitable solution in new buildings which allows simultaneous and independent demands for hot and cold water
to be met with a single machine, thus optimising energy consumptions and simplifying system management.
EXPsystems in the 2-pipe configuration, typical of residential applications, is in fact able to always fulfil the need for summer air conditioning or winter
heating and/or to produce domestic hot water in combination with the boiler. In summer operation, domestic hot water production is completely free
and energy efficiency is very high with significant advantages from the point of view of consumptions. In the middle seasons, when the cooling and/or
heating load demands are practically at zero, EXPsystems only produces domestic hot water.
The controller is able to handle all these operation modes based on the user's needs, always with a view to assuring comfort and operation reliability.

KZA

Ideal solution in new buildings.

Water cooled reversible heat pumps fitted with heat recovery for integrated DHW production
all year round.
Advanced control logic inserted in the machine able to handle all system components.
Integration source control (boiler, solar etc.).
Possibility to control up to 3 zones in temperature and humidity.
Solution suitable for new buildings that entails the installation of a water/geothermal cooled heat pump that assures cooling, heating and domestic
hot water production through heat recovery exchanger and that, thanks to the integrated advanced control logic is able to fully manage a temperature
control system coordinating the various heat sources, using them according to their output level, up to complete management of three zones in ambient
temperature and humidity.
The domestic hot water production is also sensibly managed because thanks to the third heat exchanger mounted on the outlet of the compressor, the
compressor waste heat is recovered while the heat pump works for the system both in winter and summer mode.
For substantial water withdrawal, however, the whole machine power is used for domestic hot water.
No more independent adjustments but one solution only, integrated with the machine which means the whole system is managed with the utmost
efficiency and minimum economic impact!
