ASSIGNMENT

BALANCING
P1: Four masses m1, m2, m3 and m4 are 200kg,300kg,240kg respectively. The
corresponding radii of rotation are 0.2m,0.15m,0.25m and 0.3m respectively and
the angles between successive masses are 45 o, 75o, 135o. Find the position and
magnitude of the balance mass required, if the radius of rotation is 0.2m.
P2: A shaft carries four masses A,B,C & D of magnitude 200kg,300kg,400kg &
200kg respectively and revolving at radii 80mm, 70mm, 60mm &80mm in planes
measured from A at 300mm, 400mm and 700mm. The angles between the
cranks measured anticlockwise are A to B 45o, B to C 70o & C to D 120o. The
balancing masses are to be placed in planes X &Y. The distance between the
planes A & X is 100mm, between X & Y is 400mm and between Y & D is 200mm.
If the balancing masses revolve at a radius of 100mm, find their magnitudes and
angular positions.
P3: A single cylinder reciprocating engine has speed 240rpm, stroke 300mm,
mass of reciprocating parts 50kg, mass of revolving parts at 150mm radius 37kg.
If two third of the reciprocating parts and all the revolving parts are to be
balanced, find 1. The balance mass required at a radius of 400mm, and 2. The
residual unbalanced force when the crank has rotated 60 o from inner dead
centre.
P4: A four cylinder vertical engine has cranks 150mm long. The planes of rotation
of the first, second and fourth cranks are 400mm, 200mm and 200mm
respectively from the third crank and their reciprocating masses are 50kg, 60kg,
and 50kg respectively. Find the mass of the reciprocating parts for the third
cylinder and the relative angular positions of the cranks in order that the engine
may be in completely primary balance.
P5: A four crank engine has the two outer cranks set at 120 o to each other, and
their reciprocating masses are each 400kg. The distance between the planes of
rotation of adjacent cranks are 450mm, 750mm and 600mm. If the engine is to
be in complete primary balance, find the reciprocating mass and the relative
angular position for each of the inner cranks.
If the length of each crank is 300mm, the length of each connecting rod is
1.2m and speed of rotation is 240 rpm. What is the maximum secondary
unbalanced force.
P6: The cranks and connecting rods of a four cylinder in line engine running at
1800rpm are 60mm and 240mm each respectively and the cylinders are spaced
150mm apart. If the cylinders are numbered 1 to 4 in sequence from one end,

the cranks appear at intervals of 90 o in an end view in the order 1-4-2-3. The
reciprocating mass corresponding to each cylinder is 1.5kg.
P7: The three cylinders of an air compressor have their axes 120 o to one another,
and their connecting rods are coupled to a single crank. The stroke is 100mm
and the length of each connecting rod is 150mm. The mass of the reciprocating
parts per cylinder is 1.5kg. Find the maximum primary and secondary forces
acting on the frame of the compressor when running at 3000 rpm. Describe
clearly a method by which such forces may be balanced.
P8: A vee-twin engine has the cylinder axes at right angles and the connecting
rods operate a common crank. The reciprocating mass per cylinder is 11.5kg and
the crank radius is 75mm. The length of the connecting rod is 0.3m. Show that
the engine may be balanced for primary forces by means of a revolving balance
mass.
P9: The reciprocating mass per cylinder in a 60 o V-twin engine is 1.5kg. The
stroke and connecting rod length are 100mm and 250mm respectively. If the
engine runs at 2500rpm, determine the maximum and minimum values of the
primary forces. Also find out the resultant secondary force.
P10: A five cylinder in-line engine running at 750 rpm has successive cranks 144 0
apart, the distance between the cylinder centre centre lines being 375 mm. The
piston stroke is 225 mm and the ratio of the connecting rod to the crank is 4.
Examine the engine for balance of primary and secondary forces and couples.
Find the maximum values of these and the position of the central crank at which
these maximum values occur. The reciprocating mass for each cylinder is 15kg.
P11: The firing order in a 6 cylinder vertical four stroke in-line engine is 1-4-2-6-35. The piston stroke is 100mm and the length of each connecting rod is 200 mm.
The pitch distance between the cylinder centre lines are 100mm,100mm,
150mm, 100mm and 100mm respectively. The reciprocating mass per cylinder is
1 kg and the engine runs at 3000 rpm.
Determine the out of balance primary and secondary forces and couples on this
engine, taking a plane midway between the cylinder 3 and 4 as the reference
plane.
P12: In an in-line 6 cylinder engine working on two stroke cycly, the cylinder
centre lines are spaced at 600mm. In the end view, the cranks are 60 0 apart and
in the order 1-4-5-2-3-6. The stroke of each piston is 400mm and the connecting
rod length is 1 meter. The mass of the reciprocating parts is 200 kg per cylinder
and that of rotating parts 100 kg per crank. The engine rotates at 300 rpm.
Examine the engine for the balance of primary and secondary forces and
couples. Find the maximum unbalanced forces and couples.
