Outstanding Peer Educator of The Year

Former Colorado Governor Bill Owen
once said True leadership lies in guiding others to success and thats what
all the Peer Educators in the Learning
Center do they use their skills and
knowledge to assist and guide others
in reaching their academic goals. We
employ 102 Peer Educators in The
Learning Center, and the Outstanding
Peer Educator of the Year Award is
the highest tribute we offer. Selection
criteria include but are not limited to
level and length of service as a peer
educator, consistency of effort, initiative, level of training, diversity of disciplines supported, demonstrated effectiveness and quality of work, and
proven dedication to the office mission.
As the name of this award implies,
recipients have truly gone above and
beyond in their service to our office
and their peers. Given that we value
the work done by all those who work
with us, selecting the Outstanding Peer
Educators of the Year is never an easy
decision.
Elizabeth Worth has worked for The
Learning Center for 7 semesters and
has accumulated over 300 hours of
service. She has served as a walk-in
tutor, one-to-one tutor and classroom
assistant in writing as well as a one-toone tutor and classroom assistant for
psychology. She is certified by the
international College Reading and
Learning Association as a Master Level
Tutor with 50+ training hours. Demonstrating her initiative and drive, she
has developed and presented a Peer
Writing Workshop on Writing Research Papers, and put together a

tutor training session on Therapeutic Tutoring. Students with whom she has worked
always rate their experience as positive
and helpful.
Christopher (Chris) Hakes splits his time
between business and math disciplines,
serving as a classroom assistant, walk-in
tutor, and one-to-one tutor in both areas.
He is always willing to take on additional
responsibility, such as serving as a Lead
Business tutor. He has worked for The
Learning Center for 6 semesters and has
accumulated over 500 hours of tutoring
service. He too is certified by the College
Reading and Learning Association as a
Master level tutor, and he has proven especially effective in the Math ReTake with
Success Program. He is very sought-after
for his knowledge and ability to explain
difficult concepts and consistently received
resounding praise from his tutees.
Please join us in congratulating Elizabeth
and Chris on their recognition as Outstanding Peer Educators of the Year, 2015-16!

Peer Educator of the Month - March 2016

Hallie Semmel has made outstanding contributions to The Learning Center since she started working as a tutor in the
spring of 2015. In this past semester, especially in the past month, she has really had a chance to shine. Hallie was
promoted to Lead Tutor for the spring
of 2016 due to her work ethic, passion,
and knowledge as a writing
tutor. She takes this role very seriously,
working as a writing Classroom
Assistant in six sections (including the
ENG 099I course with international
students where she runs a weekly workshop), a 1-1 writing tutor for 6 students, a Conversational English tutor,
and a walk-in writing tutor. Additionally, Hallie serves as a
humanities tutor to two students
enrolled in the Commit to Success program. Recently, a group of four tutors
presented on the Conversational English
program at the Northeast Writing
Centers Association Conference in Keene,
NH. Hallie was among them and was
a driving force in the development and
production of the high quality presentation and presentation material.
Through this hard work, SNHUs
Learning Center was showcased as an
innovative support for all of our undergraduate day students, especially
for our international students. Hallie is
an instrumental piece in the writing tutoring unit, and all of her hard work and dedication to helping students is an inspiration to anyone who works with
her. Hallie- thank you for everything you do!

Lets Look at the Stats!

With over 11,200 tutoring hours during the academic year, the peer educators at The Learning
Center are dedicated to the success of the students at SNHU!
Math tutors received the highest student visits,
2,623! The business tutors received 1,258 student visits in accounting, economics, finance, marketing, IT and international business courses and
our writing tutors assisted students in all disciplines, with 1,893 total student visits.
Tutoring in specific courses is not the only way
our peer educators help the students at SNHU.
Peer Mentors assist students with study and organizational skills, time management, and exam
strategies.
Whether its one-to-one, walk-in, mentoring, or
assisting in the classroom, our peer educators do
a great job of helping those that are looking for
extra help in any subject!

Tips

Peer Educator Service Recognition

On Monday, April 25, The Learning Center recognized peer educators who
have 100+ tutoring/mentoring hours of services. These peer educators
dedicate their time in helping SNHU students reach their academic goals
and we couldnt do what we do without them!

100 199 Tutoring/Mentoring

Hours

1.

Use your resources! Take advantage of resources such as

walk-in tutoring, or reviewing
your study guide, as these resources are designed to help
you be more prepared.

2.

Location, Location, Location!

Spend your time thinking about
the exam itself, not worrying
about where and when your
exam will be. To do this, make
sure you know the date, time
and location of your final exam
ahead of time. To do this, ask
your professor.

3.

Get a grip (on the subject matter!) Knowing whether or not

the exam will be cumulative or if
the exam will focus on the last
few chapters of material can
make a big difference in how
you prepare. For a cumulative
exam, it may help to make a list
of key ideas and key terms for
each chapter, so you dont feel
overwhelmed trying to memorize
all of the material.

4.

Study Buddies! You are not

alone in preparing for your exam. Remember that classmates
are in the same boat as you and
if you are stressed, they are too.
Reach out to a classmate (or
several classmates) to form a
study group. You can quiz each
other on some of the material
and it will boost your confidence
to know that you have prepared
well!
