INTRODUCTION
This Installation Instruction provides the installation procedures for the CTSU plug-in unit as
used with the Homeworx HFC Access Platform HDT. The procedures in this instruction should
be used when replacing an existing CTSU with a new unit. For initial CTSU installation, refer to
either the DS1 HDT Installation Manual (ADCP-61-504) or the E1 HDT Installation Manual
(ADCP-61-550).

Admonishments
Important safety admonishments are used throughout this manual to warn of possible hazards to
persons or equipment. An admonishment identifies a possible hazard and then explains what may
happen if the hazard is not avoided. The admonishments in the form of Dangers, Warnings,
and Cautions must be followed at all times. These warnings are flagged by use of the
triangular alert icon (seen below), and are listed in descending order of severity of injury or
damage and likelihood of occurrence.
Danger: Danger is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will cause severe
personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.
Warning: Warning is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that can cause severe
personal injury, death, or substantial property damage if the hazard is not avoided.
Caution: Caution is used to indicate the presence of a hazard that will or can cause
minor personal injury or property damage if the hazard is not avoided.

1. DESCRIPTION
The CTSU plug-in unit provides the clocking and time slot interchange functions for the
1.01
HDT. One CTSU provides the clocking functions required for normal system operation. A
second CTSU can also be installed and used as a back-up unit in case the first unit should fail.
There are two LEDs on the front of the CTSU.
Caution: Plug-in units can be damaged by static electrical discharge. Before handling
plug-in units, Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) protection must always be used. Store all
plug-in units that are not installed in the mounting shelf in anti-static packing material.
Always place plug-in units on an approved, electrically grounded anti-static mat.

2. INSTALLATION
Installation consists of removing the existing plug-in unit, unpacking and installing the
2.01
new plug-in unit in the HDT shelf, and then verifying that it is functioning properly.
Note: An active SCNU must be present in the HDT mounting shelf before a new or
replacement CTSU is installed. The LEDs on the CTSU will not respond as described in
this procedure if an active SCNU is not present.

A. Remove HDT Front Cover

1.

Release the latch on the right side of the HDT cover by pulling outward on the edge of
the latch. The latch is hinged at the left and swings outward.

2.

With the right hand, hold the HDT cover against the HDT shelf.

3.

With the left hand, release the left side latch by pulling outward on the edge of the latch.

4.

Pivot the top edge of the cover forward approximately 40 and then lift it free of the
HDT shelf.

5.

Place the cover where it will be protected from damage. If the installation includes more
than one HDT, the cover can be installed temporarily over the front cover of another HDT.

B. Remove Existing CTSU

Caution: If a protection CTSU plug-in is not present, removal of a CTSU from an
operating system will result in a service interruption.
1.

If the CTSU to be removed is active, on-line, and installed in a protected configuration

(standby CTSU installed), use the OSWorx TL1 MICRO Manager software (V2
systems) or the EM Companion (TR-303, V5.2 systems) to protection switch to the
standby unit.

2.

Slip on an ESD wrist strap and connect the ground wire to the ESD jack in the upper left
corner of the HDT shelf.

3.

Locate the unit to be removed from the HDT mounting shelf.

Note: CTSU plug-in units can be removed and replaced without powering down or
reprovisioning the system. The provisioning data is retained by the SCNU which will
automatically re-provision a replacement plug-in unit. However, the CTSU and SCNU
should not be removed simultaneously or the provisioning data will be lost.

4.

Release the lock tabs to free the upper and lower injectors/ejectors as shown in Figure 1.

Pivot the injectors/ejectors outward to separate the unit connector from the backplane
connector.

6.

Slide the unit outward until it is free of the HDT mounting shelf.

7.

Place the plug-in unit in anti-static packing material or on a properly grounded anti-static mat.

C. Install New CTSU

1.

Slip on an ESD wrist strap and connect the ground wire to the ESD jack in the upper left
corner of the HDT shelf.

2.

Remove the CTSU from its protective packing material.

3.

Release the lock tabs (see Figure 1) on the CTSU to free the upper and lower
injector/ejectors.

4.

Pivot the injector/ejectors outward so they point away from the CTSU.

5.

Insert the CTSU into either slot A or B in the HDT shelf as shown in Figure 2.

Figure 2. Location of CTSU in HDT Shelf

6.

Continue inserting the CTSU into the shelf while pivoting the injectors/ejectors toward
the face plate. Press on the injector/ejectors until they touch the face plate and are locked
by the lock tabs.

7.

Verify that the red FAIL LED is initially on after the unit is inserted. If the FAIL LED
is not on, wait 15 seconds, remove the CTSU, and then repeat steps 5 and 6. If the CTSU
still does not respond as described, the unit is defective. Replace the CTSU with another
unit and return the defective CTSU to ADC. (Refer to General Information at the back of
this manual.)

8.

After 5 15 minutes, verify that the LEDs are either on or off as specified by the
following:
FAIL - Off.
ACTIVE - On (green) if unit is active or off if unit provides protection.

9.

Do the LEDs appear as described?

If YES, the CTSU is properly installed and initialized.
If NO, refer to TAP-102 found in the HDT Installation Manual.
Note: The SCNU will automatically re-provision a replacement CTSU.

10.

If you switched service to the standby CTSU before replacing this unit, you may switch
service back to this slot at this time.

11.

Repeat procedure if a protection CTSU will be installed.

D. Install HDT Front Cover

1.

Locate the front cover (removed at beginning of this procedure) and open both the left
side and right side front cover latches.

2.

Hold the cover vertically with the front facing outward and then tilt the top edge forward
approximately 40.

3.

Position the tabs on the lower edge of the cover in the slots in the tab brackets at the
lower edge of the HDT shelf as shown in Figure 3.

edge of the cover fully engage the slots in the tab brackets at the bottom edge of the
HDT shelf .

5.

Pivot the cover to its vertical position against the HDT shelf.

6.

Hold the cover against the HDT shelf and then close both the left and right side latches.

7.

Check both sides of the cover to verify that they are secure. If not, release the latches and
repeat steps 4 6.
