The unit comprises two printed circuit board assemblies that are separated
These are contained in a machined aluminium box which
provides both environmental and EMC screening. The electronic circuitry is
all solid state and the unit can be mounted, remote from the antenna it is
designed to serve, in any attitude.Figure 1 shows the unit general
assembly.
by a metal plate.
The logic conversion circuits are all contained on a single printed circuit
board. Three multipin connectors provide input connections from the
aircraft power supply and the transceiver. and output dc iines t3 the
antenna. A l l connections to and from the Logic Board Assembly pass via
filtercons through an isolating plate to the respective connector pin or
power supply terminal.Figure 2 shows the unit schematic diagram.
The Logic Control Unit has three external interfaces made via miniature
circular connectors:
a> Control inputs - serial clock and data. differential pairs from the
controlling radio and address decode. block selection signals made by
wire links at the cable end connector.
b) Control outputs - eight control lines, plus zero volts return, to the
antenna. Each control line is associated with an antenna tuning segment
and is capable of delivering +28 V dc o r -5 V dc (r,ominal)
c) Power input +28 V dc plus earth return, from the aircrafts power
supply

(1) Logic Board Assembly (ref. Fig.3)
The Logic Board Assembly utilises a microprocessor with external
program and data memory as the controlling element for data reception.
validation. translation and antenna drive output. Data and clock
signals are input to the board as differential signals which are
terminated and level translated by differential amplifiers. The
processor monitors the clock signal, captures and stores data.
awaiting the end of the message before validating the message content.
Validation consists of testing the frequency content of the message
data to ensure the hundreds, tens, units and decimal MHz values are
true binary coded values. In the 7-AS182-1 Logic Unit the command word
is checked for validity.
The DATA and CLOCK inputs from the radio are fed via 22 kl;z resistors
R1. R2. R3 and R4 to differential amplifiers IC1-C and IC1-D. The
lines are held at 0 volts by resistors R5, R6. R7 and R8.
The output from IC1-C is fed direct to IC2, pin 10, and the output
from IC1-D is fed to IC2. pins 11 and 12. The output lines are held
at +5 volts via resistors R18 and R19 and are decoupled by capacitors
C7 and C8.
fC2. pins 14. 15. 16 and 17 are connected via filtercons to f l pins L.

(ref. Fig.4)
The power supply for the logic unit is a flyback, switched-mode power
converter (SMPC) system fed fron; the aircraft's 28 volt supply. The
input is taken via diode Dl. which provides reverse polarity
protection, and inductor L1 to regulator IC2. pin 1.
Inductor L1 and
capacitor C1 form an RFI filter and supply interuption reservoir, with
diode D8 as a transient suppressor. The output from IC2. pin 3 . is 12
volts set by resistors R 1 and R2 and decoupled by capacitor C2. This
is fed as Vcc to IC1. an SMPC controller, whose output at pin 11 is
taken v i a resistor R8 to TR1. The drain of TR1 is taken to the +28
volt input through the primary of transformer T1. T R 1 operates as an
OWOFF switch whose mark/space ratio is controlled by the output
waveform of IC1. Resistors R10 and R11, decoupled by capacitor C5,
form a current limiter in the emitter of TR1. The clock frequency for
IC1 is set by R9 and C 4 while the combination of R 3 , R4 and R5 acts as
a short-circuit current-limiter for the IC1 circuitry.
The secondary windings of transformer T1 provide outputs of +5 volts
for the logic circuits. with +28 volts and -5 volts supplied to switch
the PIN diodes in the associated antenna. In each circuit, diode D4,
D5 or D6 in conjunction with capacitor C7. C8 or C9 form rectifier
circuits to provide a dc output. To ensure a smooth accurate +5 volt
supply for the logic circuits, the +5 volts from D4/C7 is taken
through regulator IC3 before being applied to the logic circuits.
Note that the 0 volt line for these supplies is kept isolated from the
28 volt supply return line to help provide good EMC performance.
The output voltages are determined by the ON/OFF ratio of current
through transformer TR1 primary, this ratio being developed by the
switching of TR1 by IC1. The voltage developed across the fourth,
flyback, winding of transformer T1 and rectified by diode D7 and
capacitor C10, is fed back to IC1 as a control voltage. Any variation
of the marklspace ratio of I C 1 output. alters the time current flows
through the primary of transformer T 1 . to keep the output voltages
within limits. The initial value of the output voltages is pre-set by
adjustment of VR1. The combination of resistors R 1 5 , R14 and R6 and
capacitors C12 and C3 defines the loop stability and response time.
