Troop 65 can boast four new Eagle Scouts
in its ranks.
Trent Closson, Brenton Erman, Ethan
Kimmett and Evan Mohler earned their
Eagle Scout designation on April 23.
Closson earned his Eagle Scout by
upgrading old and installing new nest
boxes throughout Johnny Appleseed
Metropolitan Park. He was assisted by
JAMP Naturalist Mark Mohr and other
volunteers.
He is the son of Tony and Sharon

Closson and has a younger sister, Sara.
He is a senior at St. Johns High School
and participated in track and football.
He is involved at St. John the Evangelist
Catholic Church as a greeter, Eucharistic
Minister and controlling the mixing board
for the sound system. He is employed at
Arbys.
After high school, Closson plans to
attend Ball State University and major in
chemistry.

POLICE REPORTS
Information submitted
DELPHOS On April 23, officers were sent to the 200
block of Holland Avenue in reference to a criminal damaging
complaint. Officers arrived and spoke to a female who advised
officers that the back window on her vehicle had been shattered. Nothing was missing from the vehicle.
On Sunday, officers were dispatched to the 1100 block
of Erie Street to investigate a domestic violence incident.
Officers arrived and spoke with all parties involved and determined that 38-year-old Christopher Samons of Delphos had
caused physical harm to a family member. Samons was taken
into custody and transported to the Van Wert County Jail. He
will appear in Van Wert Municipal Court to face the charge of
domestic violence.
On Monday, an officer on patrol observed a vehicle being
operated on Gressel Drive. The officer had knowledge that
the driver, 51-year-old Robert Heidenescher of Lima, had an
active warrant for his arrest. A traffic stop was initiated and
Heidenescher was taken into custody. During the investigation
of the traffic stop, it was found that Heidenescher was operating the vehicle on a suspended drivers license and officers
also found him to be in possession of suspected opiates as
well as drug paraphernalia. Heidenscher was transported to
the Allen County Jail.
On Wednesday, officers responded to a disturbance in the
100 block of North Main Street. Upon arrival, officers met
with multiple persons involved in an argument. After speaking
with all parties, it was determined that no physical violence
had occurred and all parties agreed to separate.
On Wednesday, a male complainant came to the police
department to report that unknown subjects had entered his
storage unit and removed items from inside. The incident
remains under investigation.
On Thursday, a female complainant came to the police
department to report that she had been bitten by a dog on West
Fifth Street a couple of days prior. The female just wanted the
incident documented.
On Thursday, a female came to the police department to
report a domestic violence threat incident. The female told
officers that she received multiple unwanted phone calls from
a male with whom she has children. The phone calls contained
threatening statements. The report will be forwarded to the
prosecutors office for review of charges.
On Thursday, officers took a report from a female who is
the victim of identity theft. The female told officers that a cell
phone account had been opened in her name and the bills had
not been paid. The incident will be under investigation.

Stamp Out Hunger May 14

DELPHOS The National Association of
Letter Carriers will hold its annual Stamp Out
Hunger on May 14 and once again, carriers at
the Delphos Post Office will participate.
Approximately 50 million people in the U.S.
live in homes that lack sufficient food, with one
in three being a child. A lot of those people live
right here in Delphos.
All customers within the city of Delphos and
the surrounding rural routes are asked to place
non-perishable food donations, including baby
food and pet food, by their mailbox or in some

routes, at the place designated for their mail
delivery. Rural customers are asked to hang them
on their mailbox or place inside and raise the flag.
Collection boxes will also be located in the post
office lobby.
This years donations will be split between the
Thrift Shop and St. Vincent dePaul food pantries.
Last year, the Delphos community contributed
more than 2,000 pounds of food, bringing the
total to more than 5 1/2 tons in the last five years.
Many friends and neighbors have benefited
from the communitys generosity.

CLC donates to Splash Pad

DELPHOS The Catholic Ladies of Columbia Council
40 April meeting opened with prayer and the Pledge of
Allegiance.
The group approved donations to the Kiwanis Club of
Delphos Splash Pad Project, St. Johns Schools science
department and Right to Life.
The treasurer reported she is taking dues and Bakeless Bake
Sale donations.
The next meeting will begin at 7 p.m. Tuesday with Mass at
the chapel following by the business meeting at the K of C hall.
Chairladies are Velma Wehri and Janice Hilvers.

The big tractors and

planters have stirred up lots
of dust and dirt, which has
been flying in the winds,
and a lot of seed has already
gone in the ground, including some garden plots, too.
Round-up has even begun to
do its job on choking out the
weeds. Its Spring!

of the school year already,
and soon the kids will be
enjoying their summer vacation. Be sure to stop in and

Shop. Tupperware, glassware, dishes, pots, pans,

much more. Pick up some
extra toys, games, and some
story books as well. What
kid doesnt like something
new, or least different, to

play with? Theres a good
selection of books for the
ladies and gentlemen to read
while sitting around the
campsite or for a rainy day.

With summer and the
end of the school year
approaching, it sadly sometimes means another thing.
In the Delphos School district, we have many, many
children who are on the free
and reduced lunch program.
Summer to some of those
kids means stretches of
hungersome not knowing
when their next meal will
be. A lot of people find
that hard to believe that that
is happening right here in
Delphos; but if you talk to
any of the school officials,
they will confirm that sad
fact. They say they have
kids that come to school
on Monday and the last
time they had a meal was at
school on Friday. So, if you
have extra non-perishable
food items you can donate,
that would be so very much
appreciated.
Especially
needed is peanut butter

and jellies, pastas, spaghetti sauces, canned meats,
boxed or bagged cereals,
and canned corn and green
beans. If you know of a
family in need, please contact the Thrift Shop at 419692-2942 so that help can
be provided. Thats our missionits what were here
for!
Remember the Thrift
Shop as you clean out closets and reduce your clutterone persons junk
is anothers treasure! Just
remember that we cannot
take furniture, microwaves,
televisions, or computers,
and please dont let your
items set on the sidewalk
where they could be subjected to the weather or cause

your fragile items so they
dont get broken or cause

Museum offers The Mystery

of Official Car #5
The Allen County Museum will
host The Mystery of Official Car #5
at 2 p.m. May 15.
The idea for the Lincoln Park
Railway Exhibit was largely fueled
by John H. Keller, ca. 1960. It was
through his contacts at the Nickel
Plate Railroad that the Allen County
Historical Society was able to
secure ownership of Official Car #5.
According to information held by
the historical society, Official Car #5
was built by the Pullman Palace Car
Company in 1883. It was used as a
private-business car for Chauncey
DePew, president of the New York
Central Railroad. Through various
mergers and purchases between rail-
roads, it ultimately became the property of the Nickel Plate Railroad.

Recent research into the history of Car #5 raised questions as to
the accuracy of this information. In
reaching out to experts in the field
of railroad preservation, the historical society was introduced to Glenn
Guerra of Plymouth, Wisconsin.
Guerra, who has been researching and
rebuilding railroad cars since 1985,
will visit Lima to personally inspect
Official Car #5. He will be looking
for hidden numbers and markings that
may reveal the true origins of this
remarkable piece of history. As a part
of his visit, Guerra will share information about his work in railroad car
research/restoration. And, much like
solving a mystery from a set of clues,
he will share what he has been able to

decipher from Official Car #5.
Guerra has done a variety of restoration projects on railroad cars for the
Illinois Railway Museum, Henry Ford
Museum, the Museum of Science and
Industry (Chicago), and numerous
other Museums. He has also performed historic preservation surveys
and consulting for the Ohio Historical
Society, National Capital Trolley
Museum, Ringling Museum of Art,
Pennsylvania Railroad Museum,
Arizona Park System and many more.
This program is free and open to
the public.
The museum is located at 620 W.

It cant be an easy job to be responsible
for the upkeep of a big building like this.
The youth play volleyball, basketball
and other games there. It will be so much
nicer if some things would be added
for the youth who are handicapped. Im
sure they would love to be able to play
ball with the rest, but they cant. Having
games there that they can play will be
so much more enjoyable for them than
sitting and watching. As parents of handicapped children, we are more aware of
this. My heart goes out to all children and
adults with disabilities. May God bless
people who care for and are thoughtful
to others with disabilities. You will be
greatly rewarded someday for it!
We received a wedding invitation
this week for niece Lovina Coblentz and
Benjamin Schwartz. They will join hands
in holy matrimony on May 19, 2016.
Lovina is brother Amos and Nancys
daughter, and the sixth of their children to
be married. Lovina was named after me.
I still remember how special I felt when I
heard the news almost twenty years ago.

Pizza sauce
Brick or any melting cheese
Pepperoni (sliced)
Split a loaf of bread lengthwise. Place on cookie
sheet; spread with pizza sauce. Place brick or any melting cheese over the sauce, and sliced thin pepperoni on
top. Place under broiler until cheese melts. Put the bread
together as a loaf. Let it stay under broiler a few minutes
longer. Take out and eat.
Double Chocolate Mini Kisses Cookies
1 cup (2 sticks) butter or margarine, softened
1-1/2 cups sugar
2 eggs
2 teaspoons vanilla extract
2 cups all-purpose flour
2/3 cup Hersheys Cocoa
3/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1-3/4 cups (10-ounce package) Hersheys Mini
Kisses Brand Milk Chocolates
1/2 cup coarsely chopped nuts (optional)
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Beat butter, sugar, eggs
and vanilla in large bowl until light and fluffy. Stir
together flour, cocoa, baking soda and salt; add to
butter mixture, beating until well blended. Stir in mini
kisses and nuts, if desired. Drop by tablespoonfuls onto
ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 8-10 minutes or just until set. Cool slightly;
remove from cookie sheet to wire rack. Cool completely.
Makes about 3-1/2 dozen.

coincidence! I was asked to be cook at the
wedding and wear a smoke blue dress. It
looks like I better get started sewing.

of my new cookbook coming out next
year. It has taken hours of time and
effort to get this done. What a pleasure
working for the editors at Herald Press.
They have been understanding through
all our busy times. Ill share this recipe,
which will be in the cookbook. It was
my moms recipe, and it is a family

Apple Crisp
9 cups apples, peeled and sliced
1 cup sugar (more or less, depending
on variety of apples)
2 tablespoons cinnamon
Crumb Topping
3/4 cup butter (12 tablespoons)
1 1/2 cup white sugar
2 cups flour
pinch of cinnamon
In a large bowl, toss apples with
sugar and cinnamon. Pour into 9x13inch baking dish. Combine crumb topping ingredients in a bowl with a pastry
cutter or two forks. Mix until coarse and
spread over apples. Bake at 350 degrees
for 45 minutes or until apples are tender.

PUTNAM COUNTY After more than 12
years of running Ohio wheat foliar fungicide efficacy trials and analyzing data collected across the
country, I conclude that there is rarely ever a benefit to making more than one foliar fungicide applications to Ohio wheat. A single application may
not even be beneficial if the cultivar is resistant
to the prevalent disease in your area or conditions
are not favorable for disease development. If you
make a single application, go with the one that is
most likely to provide the greatest benefit in terms

of disease control and return on your investment.
Scout your fields first, and pay attention to product
labels. Here are a few tips:
1. For early-season diseases such as Septoria
and powdery mildew, if your cultivar is susceptible, you are better off applying a fungicide at
Feekes 8 (flag leaf emergence) or at Feekes 10
(boot) than at jointing (Feekes 6), for this when we
see the greatest benefit in terms of protection of the
flag leaf and yield return. For mildew and Septoria,
the residual effect of an early application is often
not sufficient to protect the flag leaf, the most
important source of sugars for grain development.

We are having really nice weather

this week. The garden dried up and we
were able to plant some onions, lettuce
and radishes. I need to go get some
sweet onions and peas to plant this
week. Spring is such a lovely time of the
year! Dandelion blossoms are popping
up, making the greens too bitter to eat
anymore.
My husband, Joe, got the mowers
oiled and ready to use. Verena, 18, and
Joseph, 13, were mowing the grass for
the first time this spring. Hopefully they
will get the rest done today.
Joe opened the gates to the pasture field
for the horses, ponies and the cow, Bessie.
They are enjoying the lush green grass
after a winter of eating hay. Our hayfield
is looking promising for a nice crop of hay.
Yesterday daughters Verena and
Loretta and I went to help sister Emma
prepare for church services. They will
host church services on May 8 and May
22. Emma and her family added three
bedrooms upstairs, so there is more to
clean. They arent done remodeling yet,
but we cleaned where we could. They
want to hang drywall yet and put in
new cabinets. Jacob plans to build their
own cabinets. So it all takes time. Since
they were behind in hosting church services, they will take it twice this time.
Daughter Elizabeth and sisters Verena
and Susan were also there for the day.
We got a lot accomplished and even got
a lot of visiting done.
We all left for home around 4:00
p.m. Our children attended a meeting
and pizza supper with the youth at the
community building. It is under new
ownership, and the new owners wanted
the youths opinions on what they could

Both Jefferson and Fort
Jennings had their chances
to do some serious damage
in their non-league baseball encounter on a cool
Wednesday afternoon at Fort
Jennings Village Park.
The host Musketeers took
more advantage of theirs,
scoring all of their runs in the
first three frames and grabbing a 6-1 triumph.
The Red and White (4-13)
minus starting junior centerfielder/leadoff man Jacob
Boop for up to four weeks
due to an injury suffered
Tuesday night at Allen East
left 12 men on base while
the Musketeers (4-11) stranded 11.
After the Wildcats left
Gage Mercer (free pass and
an error on a pickoff play)
at second in the top of the
first, the hosts got all the
runs they really needed in
the home half against starter Brett Mahlie. With one
down, Austin Luebrecht was
plunked, stole second and
scored on a single to left
by Brandon Wehri; an error
on the sequence advanced
the batter to second. A balk
moved him to third and he
scored on a 2-out grounder
by Aaron Sealts that hit off
the third-base bag for a hit.
In turn, the latter advanced to

third on an error on a pickoff
play and touched the dish for
the third tally on a run-scoring knock to left by Kyle
Hellman.
Jefferson tried to retaliate in the top of the second against starting pitcher

walked to load the bases. The
lefty Schuck grounded a single into right that got both
Sealts and Hellman in for a
6-1 edge that chased Mahlie
(for Andrew Foust).
Kimmett
began
the
Delphos fourth with a bases-
on-balls.
The Black and Orange
loaded the bases with one
down in the home fourth on
an error on a Sam Vetter
pop-up, a single to right by
Sealts and a base-on-balls by
Hellman.
Jefferson kept trying to
rally in the fifth. Stockwell
got aboard via a throwing
error, was eliminated on a
Siefker grounder and Pulford
blooped a single to short right
center.
Jefferson
threatened
reliever Hardeman in the
top of the sixth on a leadoff
line single to right center by
Kimmett and a seeing-eye
single to left by pinch-hitter Tyler Schrider. Damien
Dudgeon tried to lay down
a sacrifice bunt but alert
catcher Nolan Grote nailed
Kimmett at third. Mercer
forced Dudgeon at second
and stole second to put runners at second and third.
The Musketeers tried to
add on in the sixth against
third Wildcat pitcher Damien
Jones. Wehri was hit by a
pitch, Vetter walked, both
advanced on a comebacker
by Sealts and pinch-hitter
Ryan Hoersten walked with
two down to load the sacks.
Darius Shurelds walked
with two outs in the Jefferson
seventh against Sealts but
was eliminated on a Jones
grounder to end the game.

DELPHOS What a difference a
good start can make in a baseball teams
outlook.
Jeffersons crew got off to an early
lead in its Northwest Conference contest versus Columbus Grove Thursday
and kept pouring it on, grabbing a 15-1
6-inning rout at Wildcat Field.
The game was scheduled for Columbus
Grove but wet conditions forced a move
to Delphos, so the Bulldogs were the
home team on the scoreboard.
We worked on our approach during
pre-game batting practice, about staying
back and seeing the pitch get deeper.
We made the adjustment to a slower
pitcher as far as velocity when we didnt
the night before, Jefferson coach Doug
Geary explained. We got a good pitching
performance from Gage (Mercer) and we
played good defense behind him. We did
all three facets of the game well today.
We talked before the game about coming
in ready from the first at-bat, of being
focused, and giving ourselves a chance.
Grove coach Tony Castronova figured
this was a game to just put out of mind.
Sometimes, you just have a game like
this you just have to forget, he added.
We have a lot of young players that need
the games. Where we really are hurting
right now is in our pitching. Our starter,
T.J. (Pardo), hasnt pitched in two years,
though hes a senior, and our second guy,
Ben (Ramirez), was pitching for the first
time on varsity. We need the games but
we are running out of arms and thats
really tough being in two leagues.

The Wildcats (5-13, 4-2 NWC) had
two outs in the top of the first when
Jace Stockwell (4-for-4, 4 runs batted
in, 3 runs scored) lined a hit to center off
Grove starter T.J. Pardo, stole one of his
three bases and scored on an infield hit
by Easton Siefker and a throwing error
on the play.
Reid Stechschulte led off the Grove
(5-11) half of the first with a base-onballs against Mercer but was picked off
base. Mercer then set the next 12 batters
down.
Jefferson eventually loaded the bases
(Brandan Herron, Brett Mahlie and
Mercer) with two outs in the second but
left them loaded, three of 12 they left on
base.
The Wildcats made it 2-0 in the third
on a leadoff double to the left-field corner
by Stockwell, a Siefker groundout and a
line shot to left by Jake Pulford. Herron
added a 2-out slice to left.
Jefferson made it 3-0 in the fourth on
a 1-out triple to the right-field corner by
Damien Dudgeon and an infield nibbler
to third by Stockwell.
Delphos blew it open with a 5-run
fifth. Pulford doubled down the left-field
line to start it off, Tyler Schrider blooped
a hit to center and a wild pitch plated
pinch-runner Andrew Foust. Herron was
safe on an error and Schrider scored on
the play for a 5-0 edge. A wild pitch
advanced pinch-runner Darius Shurelds
and Eli Kimmett worked a free pass to
chase Pardo (for Ben Ramirez). Mahlie
laid down a sacrifice but a 2-base throwing error on the play scored Shurelds.

to get Mahlie home for an 8-0 edge. The
Wildcats reloaded the sacks on a 2-out
base-on-balls by Pulford but left them
that way.
Grove got one back in the fifth. With
one down, Adam Birkemeier beat out a
slow roller wide of first, Pardo walked
and Ramirez was safe on an error, with
Birkemeier scoring. Owen Fuerst walked
to load the bases but they remained loaded.
Delphos exploded for seven runs and
sent 12 batters to the dish in the sixth.
With two outs, pinch-hitter Caleb Lucas
walked, Mercer singled and Dudgeon
laid down a bunt single to load them up.
Stockwell lined a shot to right center to
get Lucas and Mercer in and put Dudgeon
at third. A double steal was successful,
with Dudgeon making it 11-1. Siefker
smacked a hard shot off third sacker
Pardo to score Stockwell and scoot to second on the play. An error on a pickoff try
at second moved pinch-runner Dre Reed
to third, from where he scored after a
walk to Pulford on a single to left by
pinch-hitter Jordan Boop. Herrons liner
to left loaded the bases and Kimmetts
blooper just to the outfield grass behind
second base plated Pulford and Boop for
a 15-1 edge.
Grant Schroeder was safe on a 2-out
miscue in the Bulldog sixth against Lucas.
Jefferson hosts Lima Central Catholic
(makeup game) at 4:30 p.m. Friday.
Columbus Grove is scheduled to visit
Lima Senior for a doubleheader at 10
a.m. Saturday.

Warnecke got into trouble in the 11th, allowing the first
three Indians hitters to reach. After a caught stealing and a
strikeout, Warnecke allowed a single to Boughman, scoring
Ben Homan with the go-ahead run.
The Jays had the tying run in scoring position when Troy
Elwer doubled with two outs in the home half, but Wendel
stranded him there.
Warnecke and starter Youngpeter combined for 21 strikeouts in the 11-inning contest.
Spurred by the momentum of the Game One win, Fort
Recovery jumped out to a 10-0 lead in the nightcap before
finishing off the run-rule win in six innings.
Elwer had three hits for St. Johns in Game Two, giving him
six hits in the doubleheader.
The Jays fall to 8-9 overall this season and 1-5 in league
play. Fort Recovery is 12-5 and 3-2.

2. For mid- and late-season diseases such as rusts and

Stagonospora leaf and glume blotch, the target growth stages
should be between boot and heading (Feekes 10.5), unless you
see Stagonospora lesions or rust pustules very early in the seasons (at or before jointing). For rust in particular, if the fungus
survived in Ohio due to a mild winter, a flag leaf application may
be needed to keep the disease in check, as this disease can spread
rapidly and damage the upper leaves before grain fill is complete
if not controlled early.
3. Split half-rate fungicide applications (half at jointing and
the other half at Feekes 8 or Feekes 10) are no better than a single
application at Feekes 8 or Feekes 10. Plus this type of program
only increases the risk of fungicide resistance and may damage
the crop by adding multiple sets of wheel tracks.
4. Use your best fungicides later in the season, just in case head
scab and vomitoxin become a problem at flowering time. You
should avoid applying the same active ingredient multiple times
during the growing season to the same wheat field. Since Prosaro
(prothioconazole + tebuconazole) and Caramba (metconazole)
are your best fungicides for managing scab and vomitoxin, apply
these fungicides at flowering. There are lots of other effective
(and sometimes cheaper) fungicides to choose from for earlier
applications.
5. If the risk for head scab is high (wet, humid conditions
during the days leading up to heading and flowering), do not
apply a strobilurin fungicide after Feekes 10, as this may result in
higher levels of vomitoxin contamination of the grain. Use strobilurin or strobilurin+triazole combination products early in the
season (between Feekes 8 and 10) to minimize potential problems
with vomitoxin and free-up Prosaro or Caramba for application
at flowering.
As farmers start to plant, drivers may see the recognizable triangular symbol warning drivers of slow moving vehicles (SMV).
The emblem is required on farm vehicles moving less than 25
miles per hour. Ohio was an agriculture leader in the development
of this SMV emblem. Walter McClure and Ben Lamp, OSU Ag.
Engineering, completed a 10-year study in the late 1950s of fatal
tractor accidents to understand the causes of highway tractor collisions. They found significant fatalities related to highway travel
of slow-moving vehicles. Detailed data on 708 slow moving
vehicle accidents showed that 65% of the motor vehicle accidents
involving slow moving vehicles were rear-end collisions.
An emblem was designed and tested for slow moving vehicles in 1962 by a team of OSU Agricultural Engineers (Ken
Harkness). After testing various designs, a triangular-shaped
emblem with a 12-inch-high fluorescent orange center and three
1 3/4 inch wide reflective borders was determined to be the most
effective design for day and night visual identification.
In 2013, the SMV celebrated 50 years as a safety symbol to
alert the motoring public when sharing the roads with agricultural
equipment. The SMV is one of the most recognized emblems
used by farmers around the world. The website, http://agsafety.

As planting season progresses, be aware of farm equipment, particularly as we hurry to kids activities. Farmers, remember that
we share the road with the general public. Lets all drive safely.

as a means of telling meaningful stories and impart life lessons. Many people in Delphos
were the young magicians

Eagle
Ermans Eagle Scout project included
building five picnic tables for the City
of Delphos. They have been placed at
Leisure Park.
He is the son of Clay and Karla
Erman, a 2015 graduate of Jefferson
High School and just finished his freshman year at Wright State University in
Dayton, where he is majoring in computer engineering.
During his high school career, he
participated in band and was a member of the National Honor Society. He
graduated with the Jefferson Award of
Distinction and Ohio Honors Diploma.
Prior to entering college, he was
employed at Arbys.
He was assisted on his project by
Buzz Ditto.
Kimmetts project included repairing
and restoring the defunct Shawnee High
School greenhouse to working order,
installing working heating and tempera-
ture control and an automatic irrigation

system and started an installation of
various tropical, desert and temperate
plants for use in science education. His
project focused around his involvement
in the schools Botany Club. He also
founded Shawnees podcast.
He is active in the schools symphonic, marching and Jazz bands and currently serves as band president. He is a
varsity member of the Quiz Bowl team,
engineer for FRC Robotics and head
writer for the school newspaper.
He is the son of Drew and Cindy
Kimmett and is currently a senior at
Shawnee High School. He plans to attend
Temple University in Pennsylvania and
study biochemistry and plant science.
Mohler earned his Eagle Scout by
building purple martin birdhouses for
Johnny Appleseed Metropolitan Park
District.
He is the son of Jeff and Joyce
Mohler and will graduate in May from
St. Johns High School, where he was
active in football, wrestling and the

track team. He is also a four-year member of the Student Council and serves as
president of the National Honor Society.
He is also a Mass greeter, Eucharistic
Minister and member of the Delphos
Knights of Columbus.
He plans to attend the University
of Cincinnati and major in mechanical
engineering.
Eagle Scout is the highest Scouting
award given. Requirements include
earning at least 21 merit badges. The
Eagle scout must demonstrate Scout
Spirit, an ideal attitude based upon the
Scout Oath and Law, service and leadership. This includes an extensive service
project that the Scout plans, organizes,
leads and manages.
The first Eagle Scout medal was
awarded in 1912 to Arthur Rose Eldred,
a 17-year-old member of Troop 1 of
Rockville Centre, Long Island, New
York.

prize. I often think if all these
choices makes our life that much
better.
That adventure made me think
of a visit we made to a little
restaurant just south of here. I
had never been there before and
was expecting a menu. The waitress said, Nope, no menus.
Everybody just gets chicken! I
was in shock. Okay, we'll have
chicken. I was so happy and
relieved. No tests! No asking
around the table what everybody
was getting, no second-guessing.
Chicken was definitely the right
choice. I felt like I had just gone
back to the good old days. Easy
living, easy choices. The chicken
was delicious.
That was all they needed to
serve, nothing fancy, no hard
choices. I even asked for a cup of
coffee! No frills, the good
old-fashioned kind just black,
please.
I thought about writing about Prince

for today, but I wouldnt be writing
about the man since I didnt know him.
Nor did I like all of his music. I do
have blurry-edged memories of riding
around in the passenger seat of a Delta
88, listening to Computer Blue at hot
summer midnight. But lots of people
are already writing about Prince Rogers
Nelson.
Instead, Ill write about something
I do know and like inside and out:
the Mutt Strut, coordinated annually by
Holy Hounds 4-H at the Putnam County
Fairgrounds. I ran the associated 5K one
year, or our Lolly Dog dragged me on a

full-out run for about a mile and I begged,
pleaded and pulled her the remaining
three miles.
That same year, Putnam Pet Pals held a craft fair. Both race and
marketplace raised funds to benefit the Putnam County Dog Shelter.
Although the race kept running, the craft fair disappeared for a few years.
Last Sunday, it was back. A pulled tendon kept me out of the raceand
from getting one of the cool race t-shirtsbut my Steven and I set up a
table and I drew caricatures of dogs.
Ive been drawing caricatures for a long, long time, first in high
school to raise Christmas money, then on the midway at Cedar Point.
And although I enjoy drawing caricatures of humans, I love drawing the
canine kind. A dog cant squinch up their nose and say, My eyes arent
that color. They are highly appreciative of your wanting to get to know
them and their personality. As I sketched a pug on Sunday, a lively, lovely
little scrap named Ace got nose-to-nose with my face, even though his
person already had his portrait in hand.
Its also a workout, drawing canines. I went from sitting cross-legged
on the cold Merchant Building floor to running after my subjects, just to
get a good look at the slope of forehead to nose tip.
Ive heard talk of the development of a dog park in the Village of
Ottawa. I picture a crowd similar to Sundaysall shapes, sizes and
temperaments (dogs, too) using such a facility, and leaving it clean for
all, just like they did Sunday. If this countys seat can turn an inhumane
drop shoot into a shelter that is a showplace of canine welfare, all things
are possible.
A quick look-see at national statistics shows that 62 percent of homes
have a pet. Almost 50 percent of homes have a dog. Suburbanites will
drive a minimum of 15 minutes to take their dog to a dog park where their
best friend can play outdoors in safety and relative freedom. Such caring,
concerned people might just call a small town with a dog park home.
Will Rogers said, If there are no dogs in Heaven, then when I die I
want to go where they went. Imagine that: a little slice of heaven, right
here in Putnam County.

Okay, what is your fair share?

When Americans hear left-wing candidates
like democratic socialist Bernie Sanders and
progressive Hillary Clinton fire up their followers with the they need to pay their fair
share mantra, we need to ask them just how
much more businesses and the wealthy need to
pay to satisfy the fair share challenge.
We dont know what fair share actually
means, but we know its more than they are
paying now. For most people, the under-taxed
people are those friends and neighbors who
earn more than we do. Thats just human
nature.
I think liberals and conservatives agree that
everyone should be willing to pay their fair
share. The problem is when candidates pander
to college students and lower middle class voters who pay little or no federal income taxes.
As potential voters, they are low-hanging fruit
for socialists.
Are we confusing the fair share argument with a taxpayers ability to pay more
premise?
Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data shows
that more than 42.6% of federal taxes are paid
by those in upper income brackets. At the
same time, about 47% of Americans now pay
zero federal income tax, and some even enjoy
whats called a negative tax rate.
Its also true that the bottom 50% of households pay a higher percentage of their income
for sales taxes and user fees. Its one of the
income inequality arguments. It also inflames
the class warfare debate. Maybe tax reform that
addresses loopholes and eliminates income
shelters could level the playing field?
As it stands now in the U.S., the top one
percent of wage earners, those who are always
under attack by the left, bring home nearly
18% of the nations income, but they pay 35%
of all federal income taxes. The nonpartisan
Tax Policy Center tells us: The richest 25% of
households paid 86% of federal income taxes
in 2012.
Could they pay even more? Do they have
the ability to pay more? Sure they could, but
should they? If so, how much more would it
take to satisfy those people saying they dont
pay their fair share? Shouldnt all households,
except the very bottom 25%, pay some federal
income taxes so they have skin in the game?
Clinton and Sanders are quick to point out
that the wealthy have gotten all of the income
gains over the past 20 years. They say thats
not fair, and Id agree it doesnt seem equitable. As a punishment for their good fortune the
rich need to pay more taxes because that would
only be fair.
People Make
the Difference
What do you think? If someone is making

$1 million a year and is paying 50% in federal,
state and local taxes ($500,000) is that a fair
share? Undoubtedly, they could pay even more
because they have the ability to pay more.
What progressives really dont like is when
someone makes $25 million a year and only
pays $10 million (40%) in taxes. Progressives
argue that that $10 million isnt their fair share.
For conservatives, the important question is:
how are the additional taxes spent?
For 2012, the IRS reported the top 1%, 1.37
million taxpayers earning $434,682 and more,
paid 38% of all federal income taxes. The top
5%, those earning $175,817 and more, paid
59%. The top 10% of income earners, those
earning $125,195 and up, paid 70% of all federal income taxes.
The IRS said the bottom 50%, people earning $36,055 and less, paid a little less than 3%
of federal income taxes. So, whos paying their
fair share if using the ability to pay standard?
Would it be fair to raise the death tax,
euphemistically called the inheritance tax. The
IRS says the estate tax brings in less than 1%
of federal revenue. How about if it only affects
estates larger than $10 million? Why not let,
or encourage, wealthy families to leave their
money to charities instead of having it taken
by a wasteful government?
One likely tax that will be raised is
the FICA tax that funds Social Security.
Currently, only the first $118,500 of income
is taxed 6.2% by (both) the employee and
the employer. That cap might be raised to
$250,000 or $500,000.
In an article published in 2003, Steven

Dutch of the University of Wisconsin--Green
Bay, studied income data forward and backward and came up with a fair share definition. Id guess progressives would say his
findings were much too conservative.
Dutch said Americans should pay more if:
They paid less than $5,500 in federal income
tax, or less than $12,000 in taxes at all levels;
or less than 10% of their gross income in federal taxes, or less than 20% of their gross income
in taxes of all kinds.
It only makes sense that the rich will get
richer.

What is troubling in todays world is the
fact politically, we are more divided than we
were just eight years ago. We dont want compromise or conciliation; we want to obliterate
the other side.
Republican presidential candidate Ohio
Governor John Kasich, who has little chance
of winning the partys nomination, has tried to
be a uniter rather than a divider. Voters seem to
see the primary season as a blood-sport where
participants show their meanness rather than
leadership skills.
Kasich tried a page from then-Sen. Barack
Obamas 2008 presidential playbook when he
said, what is important is making sure that
we disagree without being disagreeable. And
it means we can have tough, vigorous debates
around issues. What we shouldnt do is try to
characterize each other as bad people. That
has been a culture in Washington that has been
taking place for too long.

Notice of Examination
The Delphos Civil Service Commission will be conducting an open examination for
a General Aide position for Delphos City Schools. The examination will take place
Wednesday May 11, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. It will take place in the Jefferson High School
cafeteria.
A grade of 70% is required to successfully pass the examination. The passing scores
will also serve as an eligibility list. This eligibility list shall be valid for a period of one
year.

Hours: This will be a full time position
Job Description: Provide extra assistance to students with special needs, such as
those with physical and mental disabilities. Supervise students in classrooms, halls,
cafeterias, school yards, and gymnasiums, or on field trips. Tutor and assist children
individually or in small groups to help those master assignments and to reinforce
learning concepts presented by teachers. Enforce administration policies and rules
governing students. Discuss assigned duties with classroom teachers to coordinate
instructional efforts. Instruct and monitor students in the use and care of equipment
and materials to prevent injuries and damage. Observe students performance, and
record relevant data to assess progress. Present subject matter to students under
the direction and guidance of teachers, using lectures, discussions, or supervised
role-playing methods. Prepare lesson materials, bulletin board displays, exhibits,
equipment, and demonstrations. Organize and supervise games and other recreational activities to promote physical, mental, and social development.

Accident near Paulding sends one to hospital

investigating a serious injury
crash that occurred at 1:11
P.M. Thursday afternoon on
US 127 at SR 613, in Paulding
County.
A 2012 Mack semi, driven by Robert S. Reynolds,
62, of Delphos and owned by
B&K Trucking of Delphos,
was traveling southbound on
US 127. A 2006 Buick, driven by Saundra S. Bandy, 67,
of Paulding, was also southbound on US 127 and began
an eastbound turn onto SR
613. Reynolds had initiated a
pass and struck Bandy as she
was turning.
Reynolds was trapped in
the vehicle and removed by
A two vehicle accident sent one to the hospital on Thursday. The accident occurred at the mechanical means. He was
not wearing his seatbelt and

Parkview Regional Hospital
for serious but non-life threatening injuries.

Free fishing days set

DELPHOS Grab your cane pole, dig up a few worms

and head for the old fishing hole. The time is near when for
two days in May Ohioans can fish for free, no license required.
And thats a real bargain as normally an Ohio fishing license
costs residents $19. Non-Ohioans are not so lucky. This year,
the free fishing days are May 7 and 8.
Ohios free fishing days is a long-time tradition of the Ohio
Department of Natural Resources. Putnam Countys Wildlife
Officer Jason Porinchok said the free weekend of fishing has
been going as long as hes been with the ODNR and thats 14
years.
Why its not known how many people take advantage of the
free fishing days Porinchok said its pretty popular.
Especially, he said, if the weather is nice.
Ohioans can fish in any of the states public waters including the reservoirs and the rivers. As for fishing tips, Porinchok
touts an age old tradition.
You cant go wrong with a worm and a bobber; thats an
old standby to catch a bluegill or something like, especially for
kids, Porinchok said.
Dont forget that after the free fishing weekend you will
have to buy a licence. They can be bought at wildohio.org, at
Walmart and K-Mart and some bait shops too.
