B-Reading comprehension and critical thinking;
Read the following passage then answer the questions;
Do you ever wish you couldn't feel pain? Well, you should consider
yourself lucky that you can feel pain! Pain is your protection. If you
didn't feel the pain of a toothache, you might not care for that tooth in
time to save it. If you don't feel pain from touching something hot, you
might cause yourself serious injury.
Did you know that there are some people who have a disease which
prevents them from feeling certain kinds of pain? It's called
"syringomyelia". A person with this disease can touch hot things
without feeling it, or stick a nail in the hand without feeling it. But what
happens to such people is that they often do themselves great harm-
burning away tissue, receiving wounds without taking care of them, all
because they don't have pain to tell them something was wrong.
Strangely enough, science still can't explain fully how pain arises. It is
believed that pain is due to an injury to the free nerve endings in the
skin. For this reason, a very weak stimulus will not produce pain.
1-Why is feeling pain considered a blessing?
2-Do all people have the same degree of sensation? How?
3-How can science interpret the sensation of pain?
4-What do you think the most important benefit of sensation of pain
for us is?
*Through the history of man, the lion has been regarded as the symbol
of strength. We say "strong as a lion" or "lion-hearted". In courts
throughout the world, the lion was used on shields and crests and
banners to indicate power.
Probably this wasn't because anybody could prove that a lion could
defeat all other animals in combat, but because lions strike such terror in
man and in other beasts.
The ancient Egyptians believed the lion was sacred, and during the time
when Christ was born, lions lived in many parts of Europe. By the year
500, however, they had all been killed. Today, the only places where
lions are plentiful are in Africa and in one region of India.
Lions are members of the cat family The lion's voice is a roar or a
growl. Unlike other cats, it doesn't purr, and rarely climbs trees. It takes
readily to deep water, so they live in more or less open country and not
in forests. The main food for the lion comes from zebras, gazelles and
antelopes and sometimes it attacks giraffes. It doesn't eat elephants,
rhinoceros or hippopotamus.
1-Why are lions used as banners in courts?
2-How is a lion different from the cat?
3-What animals do lions feed on?
4-Where is the main home of lions?
B-Read the following passage and choose;
The mining of silver has been carried on from ancient times. In Europe,
kings depended on it as their source of wealth. In fact, when the Spanish
silver mines began to run low, the king of Spain was delighted that the
discovery of America led him to obtain the great silver mines of Mexico
and Peru.
During the gold rush day in California, people cursed the "black earth"
that stuck to their gold dust. It was only by accident that they discovered
it was silver one.
Silver is one of the most widely distributed of all metals. Sometimes ,
it's found in solid pieces, and in Norway a piece of solid silver was once
found that weighed three- quarters of a ton! But usually silver comes in
ores from which it must be separated.

Imagine a wanderer in the desert, dying of thirst. He looks off into the
distance and sees a vision of a lake of clear water surrounded by trees.
He stumbles forward until the vision fades and there is nothing but the
hot sand all around him.
The lake he saw was a mirage. What caused it? A mirage is a trick
nature plays on our eyes because of certain conditions in the
atmosphere. First we must understand that we are able to see an object
because rats of light are reflected from it to our eyes. Usually these rays
reach our eyes in a straight line. SO if we look off into the distance, we
should only see things that are above our horizon.
Now, we come to the tricks the atmosphere plays with rays of light. In
a desert, there is a layer of dense air above the ground which acts as a
mirror. An object may be out of sight, way below the horizon. But when
rays of light from it hit this layer of dense air, they are reflected to our
eyes and we see the object as if it were above the horizon and in our
sight.
1-The vision of the mirage often ……as one comes nearer.
a-sparkles b-shines c-fades d-brightens
