Discovering Hotwells

Results of the recent Hotwells & Cliftonwood Community Survey HOTWELLS & CLIFTONWOOD
COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION
carried out in April & May make fascinating reading.
560 people returned the questionnaires; a high response of 35% of the 1600
distributed to households in the area. Here are some of the highlights.

HOTWELLSNEWSAutumn 2003
Æ Size of household: Most are small - 32% of people live alone while 33%
are in 2 person households.
Æ Work and Travel: 54% of respondents owned one car and 69% of
those parked on the street. 51% said they worked out of the area but a
surprising 35% in the area. This perhaps, explains how 40% walk to work
as against the 37% who use cars.
Æ Shopping: 36% said they used the local shops and 55% those in Clifton
but 62% disliked the lack of variety of shops.
Æ Pubs: 55% frequented Hotwells pubs at least occasionally. Asked “What
would encourage you to use the pubs”, smoke free areas (12%) and more
family friendly facilities (10%) topped the wish list.
Æ Leisure Facilities: Most popular request was a swimming pool (35%)
followed by a gym/fitness club ( 13%).
Æ Recycling: 74% of people said they use the black recycling boxes. Many
of those who didn’t either had no box or didn’t know what the collection
schedule was; suggesting more needs to be done to promote the scheme.
Many people wanted plastics to be included in the scheme (30%).
Results of the survey, which was sponsored by the Council and organised by
Community Links on behalf of the Community Association will be used to im-
prove the understanding of local needs in planning improvements for our area.
