A BRIEF REPORT ON

OREDO 14 FIELD
EXPERIENCE
BY
ADEPOJU ADEMOLA
SAMUEL
DRILLING DEPARTMENT
FROM 1ST 8TH OF APRIL,
2014.

Arrived Oredo 14 field about 10:45am, I met the safety officer who gave me a brief safety induction
and taught me different kind of alarm used in case of emergency, he also gave me a stop card which is
used to note any unsafe act you observe during the time of operation, immediately after that I was
directed to the medical officer for medical check up, he checked my blood pressure and told me about the
anti-malaria drug they use on the rig and when to use it, I was then taken to the camp boss to secure
accommodation at the camp site.
I met the tool pusher who is the overall head of the BOGEL staffs, he gave me a general overview on the
drilling operations and told me to feel free to go anywhere and ask questions.
During this period, I saw so many drilling operations and I saw different kind of equipments used on the
rig and how they use them.

SOME TOOLS USED ON THE RIG

A CONDUCTOR PIPE : Also called a foundation casing or a 30 conductor pipe, The
Conductor Pipe is a large diameter pipe that is set into the ground to provide the initial stable
structural foundation for a borehole or oil well.
The conductor pipe is normally pipe into the earth by the hydraulic hammer, This process is
called piling.

TOTCO SURVEY : This is an instrument more generally known in the oil industry as simply a
'survey', is the measurement of a borehole's departure from the vertical, measured in degrees ().

A HOPPER : Hopper is like a funnel-like shaped equipment used as a channel for mixing of both mud
bulk material and mud additive chemicals into the drilling fluid.

DRILL COLLAR : A component of a drill string that provides weight on bit for drilling. Drill collars are
thick-walled tubular pieces machined from solid bars of steel.

DRILL PIPE : Drill pipe, is hollow, thick-walled, steel piping that is used on drilling rigs and horizontal
drilling to facilitate the drilling of a wellbore and comes in a variety of sizes, strengths, and weights but
are typically 30 to 33 feet in length. They are hollow to allow drilling fluid to be pumped through them,
down the hole, and back up the annulus.

HEAVY WEIGHT DRILL PIPE : A Heavy Weight Drill Pipe (HWDP) looks like a normal drill pipe
except for an upset centered along the tube which helps to prevent excessive buckling.

AGITATOR : A Mud Agitator is used in surface mud systems to suspend solids and maintain
homogeneous mixture throughout the system. A mechanical agitator is driven by an explosion-proof
motor, coupled to a gear box that drives the impeller shaft.

POOR BOY DEGASSER : Mud Gas Separator is commonly called a gas-buster or poor boy
degasser. It captures and separates large volume of free gas within the drilling fluid. If there is a "KICK"
situation, this vessel separates the mud and the gas by allowing it to flow over baffle plates.

CONVEYOR : This is like a channel where cuttings are being conveyed from the shale shaker to the
skips or the pit.

SHALE SHAKER : Shale shakers are components of drilling equipment used in many industries, such
as coal cleaning, mining, oil and gas drilling.[1][2] They are the first phase of a solids control system on a
drilling rig, and are used to remove large solids (cuttings) from the drilling fluid ("Mud").

CROSS OVER : Crossover Subs are primarily used for a couple of purposes. They are used for crossing
over from the size of a single connection to the other. Crossover sub is also used for prolonging the life of
the more expensive components of the drill stems.

DRILL PIPE SLIP : A device used to grip the drill string in a relatively non damaging manner and
suspend it in the rotary table. This device consists of three or more steel wedges that are hinged together,
forming a near circle around the drill pipe.

DRILLING TONG : This is a Large capacity self-locking wrenches used to grip drill string components
and apply torque. The breakout tongs are the active tongs during breakout operations.

A SPINNER : This also an equipment used in making up and breaking up of drill pipes.

STABILIZER : A Drilling Stabilizer is a down hole equipment used in the bottom hole
assembly (BHA) of a drill string. Its purpose is to mechanically stabilize the BHA in the borehole
in order to avoid unintentional sidetracking, vibrations, and ensure the quality of the hole being
drilled.

CENTRALIZER : These are stainless steel centralizers which are used to center your monitoring pipe,
screen, in the well borehole. They help stabilize your pipe, eliminating the danger of off-center or
wavering well installations.

TOP DRIVE SYSTEM : A top drive is a mechanical device on a drilling rig that provides clockwise
torque to the drill string to facilitate the process of drilling a borehole. It is an alternative to rotary table. It
is located at the swivel place and allows a vertical movement up and down the derrick.

CASING SHOE : A casing shoe or guide shoe is a bull-nose shaped device which is attached to the
bottom of the casing string. A casing hanger, which allows the casing to be suspended from the wellhead,
is attached to the top of the casing.

CELLAR PIT : A dug-out area, possibly lined with wood, cement or very large diameter (6 ft [1.8 m])
thin-wall pipe, located below the rig. The cellar serves as a cavity in which the casing spool and casing
head reside. The depth of the cellar is such that the master valve of the Christmas tree are easy to reach
from ground level.

LESSON LEARNT.
Going to the field rally helped me to know certain things about oil and gas industry, Ive being able to
relate what I learnt in classroom to what I saw on the rig. It also helped me to appreciate how drilling
operations really works and I was able to see some equipments for the first time.
