Report on Participation in

International Conference on Innovations in Structural Engineering (IC-ISE 2015)

Organized by Department of Civil Engineering, OSMANIA UNIVERISTY
during 14th to 16th December, 2015

The International Conference on Innovations in Structural Engineering (IC-ISE 2015) was held by
Department of Civil Engineering, Osmania University during 14th to 16th December, 2015. The
conference focused on a wide range of topics related to Structural Mechanics Analysis & Design,
Finite Element Analysis, Earthquake resistant deign, Composite Structures, Experimental stress analysis,
Experimental stress analysis, Special concretes and their applications in wide variety of areas of
structural engineering.
In the conference, total papers presented are 167. While the papers were presented in three parallel
sessions during three days. The acceptance rate for conference papers was 30% with papers being
submitted from reputed organizations such as BITS Pilani, NITs, IITs, CSIR-SERC etc.
1. Keynote Presentations
Dr. Indubushan Patnaikumi of RMIT Univeristy Australia presented ways in which Very high volume
concrete with 65% replacement of cement can be developed. Prof. Emad Gad of Swinburne University
of Technology, Australia presented his work on Innovations in reduction of human induced vibrations in
long span floors using tuned mass dampers. John E Bolander of Univeristy of California, USA delivered
keynote speech on Concrete modeling for pratical applications. Prof.Lucia Tirca of Concorda Univeristy,
Canada presents the effects of long-duration earthquakes on the seismic response of concentrically
braced frame buildings. Prof. K V L Subramaniam presentation included details of use of low carbon
binder using siliceous flyash at very high levels of cement replacement. Er.Vinay Gupta of Tandon
Consultants New Delhi lectures on Precast concrete stations for Metro projects: A challenge to designers
and Constructors. Prof. Sudhir Kumar Barai of IITK delivered lecture on Computational intelligence
tools in Structural engineering. Dr. R Ravichandran and Dr P Gnadhi of CSIR-SERC Chennai presented
keynote lectures on FEM analysis of thermography technique for defect identification in concrete slab
and Studies on static and fatigue behavior of concrete beams reinforced with GFRP Rebars.
2. Paper Presentations
Total 167 papers were presented. Although most of the papers at the conference were interesting, there
were very few papers that were directly relevant to my research. The papers published by Harinath
ReddyD and Prof Ananth Ramaswamy of IISc Bangalore is the most relevant. The above authors
presented paper on Numerical Model for Concrete exposed to High Temperature. According to his work
Fire in concrete structures causes serious damage in the form of deterioration of strength properties and
may lead to failure of the structures. Estimating the extent of damage is very important for repair or
retrofitting of the concrete structures. In the present study a hygro-thermo-mechanical model is

developed to estimate the pore pressure, temperature and displacements. These parameters are treated as
state variables which intern vary with the extent of the dehydration process when concrete is exposed to
high temperature. Concrete is treated as a deformable, multiphase porous material. The model is
developed based on the pore mechanics concepts. Phase changes and chemical reactions (dehydration)
are taken into account in the model development. The model is a coupled chemo-hygro-thermomechanical process (accounting for the extent of dehydration). The model accounts for the characteristic
of various phases of concrete such as moisture, energy and transport phenomena. Evolution of material
properties (porosity, permeability, strength properties) with the extent of temperature of concrete is
considered in the model.
3. My Contribution to the Conference
I have presented two papers at the conference. For the first paper titled Mathematical Modeling for
Durability Characteristics of Bacterial Concrete, I am the main author and presenter and for the second
paper Studies of Sulphate Attack on Sugar Cane Bagasse Ash Concrete, I am one of the authors and
my co-author presented the paper. The paper presentations was received well and some interesting
questions were raised.
I have also chaired the Session V on second day of the conference along with Prof G V Rama Rao of
Vasavi College of Engineering.
4. Impact of Acquired Knowledge
The conference offered me a great opportunity to interact with prestigious researchers in the area of
Special Concretes and its application from all over the world. It provided me with an opportunity to
learn about other cutting edge research in the area which assisted me to come up with a few new ideas
relevant for my research. All in all the conference was an extreme success. This acquired knowledge is
going to help me in conducting Faculty Development Program in Department of Civil Engineering
(Proposed in March- April 2016).
I would like to thank the Principal, HOD and TEQIP Coordinator & his Team of Gokaraju Rangaraju
Institute of Engineering and Technology (GRIET) Hyderabad for encouraging and providing the funds
that allowed me to participate and present my papers.
Thanking you,
