Optimization and Analysis of EDM Process Parameter

In this paper, application of the Taguchi method for investigating the effect of process parameters on
performance parameters of EDM process has been reported. The Taguchi method is used to formulate
the experimental layout, analyses & to determine the optimum choice for EDM process parameters. In this
work an experiment was conducted to investigate the effect of current, pulse duration time (Ton) , pulse
interval time (Toff ), work piece material and tool material on Material removal rate, tool wear rate and
surface roughness. The experiment was conducted according to an orthogonal array L27 based on Taguchi
method. The Analyses based on Signal to Noise ratio (S/N ratio) & Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) of S/N
ratio reveals the order in which the process parameters have effect on MRR, TWR and Surface Roughness


of EDM process. The optimum choices of process parameters were determined to maximize MRR and to
minimize TWR and surface roughness from main effect plots of means.
