Human Trafficking

The purpose of this essay is to describe what is human trafficking, The United Nations Office
on Drugs and Crime in 2016 defines human trafficking as Trafficking in Persons as the
recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring or receipt of persons, by means of the threat or
use of force or other forms of coercion, of abduction, of fraud, of deception, of the abuse of
power or of a position of vulnerability or of the giving or receiving of payments or benefits to
achieve the consent of a person having control over another person, for the purpose of
exploitation, (UNODC, 2016).
Once, we know how human trafficking have been define; its important to know that every day in
different parts of the world thousands of men, women and even children are been capture by
traffickers. The purpose of these traffickers are exploiting the human race with the prostitution,
sexually and by forcing them to labor under their rules; the traffickers use slavery and use the
practice of organs removal to turn it as profit in the black market.
The Human Rights Commission have stablished the three most common type of trafficking,
which are: sex trafficking (79%), forced labor (18%) and debt bondage (2%). Mentioning that
the forced labor is the biggest one in the trafficking world, according to the U.S Department of
State; secondly, is the debt bondage where the person is unwillingly put to work so a debt can be
paid. And third but not least, sex trafficking where this last one impact womens and childrens;
making them participate in the profitable sex market.
Its clear to the authorities that any child under 18 years old that have been used for this purpose
its contemplated a victim of sex trafficking; therefore, 80% of the humans trafficked in the

entire country yearly are women and girls, adding numbers to approximately to 1 million
children in the sex trade world.
The human trafficking is a subject that have denigrated today society, and there is many types
of labor that this victims are force to do. Some of this jobs are: agriculture work, manufacturing,
construction, strip club, prostitution even jobs like in the hotel services, health and elderly care.
Furthermore, lets mention some signs or flags that as future health professional should look for
when we may have a persons that its been hold as human trafficking victim. This person may
show that their movements are been controlled by another person, have fake documents, the
person doesnt have access to their personal earnings, show signs of excessive labor hours,
shows that the relation with their family is restricted.
On other hand, the TVPA (Trafficking Victims Protection Act of 2000), notice that the
traffickers tent to use psychological and physical coercion to keep threatened this victims so they
do whatever is been imposed. Also, the TVPA mention that if the victims fail to do their jobs they
can suffer from different type of abuse such as: deprivation of food, physical abuse, rape,
beatings, or confinement. Moreover, the human trafficking victims face many health exposure,
for instance the overuse of drugs and alcohol; they are susceptible to STD such as HIV/AIDS,
syphilis, UTIs; sterility and other diseases like hepatitis and pneumonia.
In conclusion, its clear that the human trafficking its a problem that can hurt from the root of
our society our children to the heart of the family nucleus women. So, as future nurses is
imperative to be aware of this victims that may be one of our patient, and by knowing how to
identify them and see the flags we can provide the right tool for their protection emphasizing in

their wellbeing. By seeing this, we all have to recognize the human trafficking is TODAY
SLAVERY.
