EDITORIAL: Eye-Opener Experience
My NSTP experience has really changed me a lot. I have become more aware
of the current events and situations here in our country and with that, I realized that
I should be a part of the change in our society. A change in which will benefit all the
sectors of our community and to establish equality and common good for all of us.
Our LTS fieldwork in Bataan is indeed an eye-opener for me. It made me realize that
people like us in the urbanized sector are truly fortunate enough to have all the
comfortable means in our everyday lives. Seeing the pupils of the elementary
school, enjoying and making the most of their simple ways in lives, made me feel
motivated to share and teach them.
Overall, I am indeed grateful for having the change to participate in this lifechanging experience for me. It has shaped me to become a productive and
proactive member of the society and I have also learned that even though how big
or small your contribution to the nation, it really matters a lot for the present and
future generations of our society.

Article: (E-READS)
The eREAD (Electronic Repository of Related Educational Articles and
Documents) is a widely-used learning tool for facilitators to share different softcopy
handouts, which are usually in .pdf format, regarding several topics and issues that
are relevant to our country and as well to the NSTP. For our course matter, the
different eREADS are as follows:
1. Chapter 1: Role of the Youth in Nation-Building
- In this chapter, the title is almost self-explanatory, but to maximize the
idea, this eREAD is about what the youth like us can do to be a part of the
team that would bring change in our society by means of learning on how
to be a good citizen of our country. Filipino values were also discussed
such as pagkamaka-Diyos, pagkamaka-tao, pagkamaka-bayan, and
pagkamaka-kalikasan.
2. Chapter 2: A Christian Call and Thomasian Response
- This chapter tackles about deeper understanding about human dignity
and awareness and sensitivity to the ones who are in the peripheries and

experiencing poverty. One of the objectives of this chapter is to

demonstrate the identifiable characteristics of being a Catholic.

3. Chapter 3: National Concern

- This focuses on dealing with our awareness about several situations and
issues our country is currently facing and identifying the possible
problems to these issues though the involvement of the youth.
4. Chapter 4: Disaster Preparedness and Management
- It tackles about the different activities to be done before, during and after
natural calamities such as fire, earthquake and typhoon. In collaboration
with this, a DRRM seminar was also held to teach us students the different
first aid measures and techniques to be done during a calamity.
5. Chapter 5: Community Development and Community Organizing
- This chapter is about understanding what a community development is all
about and how important it is when it comes to uniting the people within
the said community so as to build their participation and cooperation for
the improvement of their barangay.
6. Chapter 6: Project Management and Development
- It deals with planning on how to create and organize a project that will
cater the needs of a certain community. Understanding what Project
Management is and evaluating the significance of project management in
community development are some of the objectives of this eREAD.
eREADS are given to NSTP students to read and will serve as their online
lecture as well. Before reading it, students are first required to take the Module PreTest so as to identify their background knowledge about the topic. After reading the
eREAD lesson, students are also required to answer the Module Post-Test to know
the capacity of what they have learned in the said eREAD. Discussion threads are
also created for the students so freely write their thoughts and create a short essay
regarding the topic given by the facilitator.
Overall, eREAD is an effective way to share and discuss the lessons online
and students find it convenient as well because they can access it anytime and
anywhere within their comforts.

Feature: UNIK Seminar

One of the requirements for our NSTP course is to attend this seminar entitled
UNIK (UST-NSTP Ibang Klase). The highlight of this seminar is relevant to the
upcoming 2016 National Elections. And it deals mainly about wise-voting. Several
speakers from UST political organization Aktiboto were also invited to share their
thoughts regarding the said topic. Aktiboto is a student-initiated advocacy to
educate the people for the upcoming 2016 National Election.

The highlight of the seminar is about emphasizing our right to vote. This is a
right that no one can ever take away from us. Thus, vote-buying should not be
tolerated in all circumstances. In addition to this, the speakers had mentioned that
we should personally choose the leader that we think is indeed can be a true leader
in our nation and we should not let others choose for us or even pressure us on
choosing who to vote.
In conclusion, UNIK Seminar has taught its participants, particularly the
students, about how ones vote can greatly change the state of our society. Indeed,
we all should choose the leaders who we personally think are the effective and
dedicated ones and we should not let ourselves be influenced just because of its
popularity. Vote-wisely, Thomasians!
