Dear Readers,
As you know, UPSC Civil Service Examination has two
stages. The rst stage is preliminary examination and has
multiple choice questions. For detailed description click
here.
The second stage is the Main Examination. There are seven
papers in this stage. All of them are descriptive essay type
question papers. The number of questions asked in the descriptive paper vary between 20 to 25 and the
total words is about 5000.

UPSC Main Exam Writing Tips

Good answers to descriptive essay type questions need excellent knowledge of the subject
matter. But mere evidence of this knowledge is not enough. For example, if you are
asked to compare the constitutions of India and the United States, you will get little or no credit if you
merely describe them.

Or, if you are asked to evaluate the causes of the French Revolution, you are not answering the question
if you merely list those causes. An essay is satisfactory only if it answers directly the question asked.

What are expected?

answer must answer the question.

In the essay type answers, the examiners want more than just the facts.
Marks will be determined by how well you prove your knowledge of the facts and your understanding
of those facts in a greater context.

2. Your answer is well written.

Certain specic elements are building blocks of a good essay type answer:
Focus:
The answer must answer all parts of the question without random ideas which have little or nothing
to do with the question.
Adding random facts or ideas will not help improve you marks because you know them.
The opposite is true adding random, unrelated ideas or facts almost always result in the reduction
of marks, i.e. your answer must be Purposeful, Directed, Centered, and Pointed.

You know the answer to the question but your ability to communicate that knowledge to the
examiner depends on how well you structure your answer.
Take the time to make a rough outline of what you want to write and in what order you want to
present it.
Always begin with an introduction and end with a conclusion with out actually writing them in the
answer.
Stream of consciousness writing (putting things on paper as you think of them) will result in a
mediocre marks at best. That is, your answer must be Organised, Planned, Tight, Appropriate And
Thought-out.
Presentation:
Aspirants who do not use the accepted rules of English are often thought to be less competent or
knowledgeable than those who do.
If you have all the elements of a well-written answer but your use of language, sentence structure,
spelling or handwriting make it dicult to read or understand what you are trying to say, your marks

will suer.
Make sure you use good sentence structure, grammar, spelling and legible handwriting. These
elements will make a good answer and will fetch you better marks as well.
The ability to write good answers involves understanding the process and the conventions of essay
type answer writing.
