Onesteel- Whyalla Steel Works South Australia - Floating Roof Laser application
Four lasers are used on the tank perimeter to monitor floating roof
level. For example, the roof must rise and fall parallel to ground level
to prevent damage to internal seals. Replacement of the internal Gas Accumulator at Onesteel - Whyalla
seal is very expensive operation. If seal damaged due to uneven
roof rise, the replacement operation is estimated at $150,000. The
fifth laser is mounted at tank centre and will probably be used as the
basis for tank contents. All five LM80’s had special heavy duty tripod
mounts manufactured to enable laser removal without disturbing
alignment and site staff found the mounting simple to align.

represent rail car offloading status. The purple line is
the level reported by LM200. Customer is very happy
with K-TEK’s LM200 performance.
The LM200/SL/FM are being used to position coal “tripper” loader to the correct silos. The tripper car
is moved into position based upon the silos level. The level is currently monitored by LM200 Laser Transmitters.
The LM200’s for positioning operate on 200’ range and are working well. There was not any competition for the
tripper cars primarily because the lasers worked so well on the coal bins they decided to purchase for the tripper
cars as well. The LM200/SL/FM are installed on the existing primary coal bunkers for continuous coal level meas-
urement. Plant Sherer operates 34 bunkers. The Lasers measure continuously the level in the 75/23m coal pri-
mary bunkers. This is completely automated coal loading system.

STEEPING
Each stainless steel steep tank holds about 3,000 bushels of corn for 30 to 40 hours of soaking in 50 degree Celsius
water. During steeping, the kernels absorb water, increasing their moisture levels from 15 percent to 45 percent and
more than doubling in size. The addition of 0.1 percent sulfur dioxide to the water prevents excessive bacterial
growth in the warm environment. As the corn swells and softens, the mild acidity of the steepwater begins to loosen
the gluten bonds within the corn and release the starch. After steeping, the corn is coarsely ground to break the
germ loose from other components. Steepwater is condensed to capture nutrients in the water for use in animal
feeds and for a nutrient for later fermentation processes. The ground corn, in a water slurry, flows to the germ sepa-
rators. Level measurement is important for steeping tank. LM80 provides reliable level measurement for this applica-
tion.

Application: Corn Steeping tank
Laser used: LM80/SX/FM
Quantity: 32
Problem: Customer used 4 different instruments (1 DP Cell Rosemount and 3 RF
switches from Drexel Brook). Also they tested Rosemount open air radar
(SAAB) Laser replaced all these instruments – measures to the tank
bottom, maintenance free
