ISSUE 10

MAY 3, 2016

Dear Church,
This summer, Ill be taking
a trip to Brazil. In preparation,
Ive been trying to learn some
words and phrases in Portuguese. Here are some of the
words Ive learned:
igreja (church)
abacaxi (pineapple)
almoo (lunch)
cenoura (carrot)
cebola (onion)
Learning a new language
is hard. Since January, Ive
been spending a little time
every day practicing, and Im
still a long way from being
able to communicate in Portuguese.
The only reason I am able
to read and speak English is
that Ive been practicing nonstop, every day for over 45
years and I still get things
wrong! (Thank goodness for
spellcheck!) It takes lots and
lots of practice, with lots and
lots of repetition, to learn a
language.
The Portuguese words
above are all simple nouns. I
wont even go into how verbs
are conjugated in various
tenses, or how prepositions
are used because I still
havent figured such things
out. In my practice, the same
words and phrases keep coming up, and I keep getting
them wrong. But with enough
practice and repetition day
after day after day, eventually
the learning will come.
Why am I telling you this?

Well, if learning a new

language requires lots of
daily
repetition,
what
makes us think that we can
learn how to be a Christian
without practicing our faith
every day? It takes a lot of
repetition, day after day
after day.
One of the best forms
of practice is to go to worship regularly. Worship is
where we learn the language of God, so that we
can then use that language
in our daily lives. Those
who dont go to worship
regularly will never be fluent in God-language.
Other forms of practice
include daily (yes, daily)
prayer; time spent in service to others; and regular
giving to the church.
Now without looking
back to the beginning of
this article, lets see how
well you remember those
five Portuguese words I
shared with you:
igreja
abacaxi
almoo
cenoura
cebola
Make your guess, then
look back and see how
many you got correct. Ill
tell you, it took me a long
time to stop confusing cenoura and cebola; those
two words look a lot alike,
and it took me a lot of
daily practice to get that
right.
And so it is with faith.
See you in worship!
Pastor Danny

Pentecost
Pentecost celebrates the descent of the Holy Spirit
upon the disciples. In Acts 2,
we read that the Spirit
united all believers, so that
even barriers of language
were broken down.
Join us on May 15 at 10:15
a.m. as we celebrate this
special day. There will be
lots of special music by our
choir. This will be a joint
worship service, with our
Cambodian members who
usually worship at 2:30 joining us in the morning. Then
after worship, we will enjoy
a delicious potluck lunch.

TASTE THE FIRE!

On Sunday May 15th the choir will present
a special worship service of music .
Taste the Fire is a compilation of songs rejoicing in Pentecost. The music was written
by Joann Timmerman, a Catholic nun, from
a charismatic Catholic Church. At the time
this was written she was music director in
Littleton Colorado and the musical premiere

was

simple

yet

glorious.

Ms

Timmerman herself gave us the music to

use and hopefully inspire others.
So come next Sunday, bring a friend to enjoy this musical treat and don't forget to
wear RED!

Youth Group Explores

Outer Space!
We are in need of more helpers to cook food for
Christian Outreach in Action. This is a once-amonth opportunity, on the 2nd Thursday of each
month at 10a.m. to spend a few hours in the

you can spare a few hours each month for this
important ministry, please call Pat Cohen or
contact the church office.

Summer Camp

On Sunday, May 1, some of our youth went on a

field trip to the Griffith Observatory. After watching the planetarium show which described the
Big Bang and how our knowledge of the universe has grown over time some of our youth
could be heard asking, Why are we here?
Good question!
