Lab Objectives
The lab will run parallel to the Computational Techniques course. The objective of the lab is to
implement the numerical techniques developed in the course to problems of engineering interest. The second
objective is to use these tools and commercial packages to solve process simulation problems.
The first part of this course will focus on MATLAB, which is a powerful package for engineering
applications, whereas the second part will cover process simulation using the Aspen-Plus package.
Lectures and Laboratory Sessions
The first part (Matlab) consists of nine modules, while the second part (Aspen-Plus) consists of four
modules. In the first part, first two modules are meant to explore and learn the basics of MATLAB.
Thereafter, each module will introduce one concept, followed by hands-on programming session in the DCF.
Each module will have one 2 hr 30 min lab session for each student per week.
There will be a 30-minute lecture prior to every lab session (except for the 1st two modules) in MSB355 from 2:15 to 2:45 pm. In these lectures, general concepts and programming methods relevant to the
current module will be discussed during the 30-minute lecture. At the end of the lecture, a home assignment
will be given. The assignment will involve a programming problem covering the key concepts of the
particular module. The assignment will be due at 2:15 pm on the following Wednesday/Thursday.
The lab sessions will be held in the DCF: one group of students will have a session on Wednesday and
the next group on Thursday, from 2:45 onwards. In these lab sessions, students will be asked to solve another
problem related to the concepts discussed in the lecture delivered previous Friday.
The hands-on lab sessions on Wednesday/Thursday will be graded. Assignments are due for the entire class
on at 2:15 pm on the day of their lab sessions. Attendance is compulsory for all the sessions.
All students in this lab will do the assignments and lab sessions individually.
Code of Conduct
Students are expected to follow the model code of conduct. Any act of copying or academic
dishonesty will be punished. NO DISTINCTION WILL BE MADE BETWEEN INDIVIDUALS COPYING AND
INDIVIDUALS PROVIDING MATERIAL TO COPY.
