bigotry, and pornography of various kinds. A further danger is the growth of a cult of
information, which is when accumulation of data and information becomes an end in
itself, impairing the ability of people to distinguish between information on the one
hand and knowledge, experience and wisdom, on the other.
No such thing as society?
Before, people were seen as members of the social groups to which they belonged:
their family, village, tribe, local community individualism has appeared as the
dominant mode of social organization thanks to industrial capitalism and
globalization. Industrial capitalism meant that people were confronted by a
broader range of choices and social possibilities, which encouraged them, the first
time, to think for themselves. This gave rise to economic individualism that is the
belief that individuals are entitled to autonomy in matters of economic decisionmaking, take responsibility for their economic and social circumstances. It is loosely
linked to property rights. Whereas industrial society linked peoples social status
based on their productive roles encouraged people to define themselves
increasingly in terms of what they own and how much they own. While an
emphasis on production tends to foster social solidarity, in that it highlights what
people have in common with other people, consumerism encourages people to
think and act more in individual terms, focusing on self-gratification and seeing
consumption as a form of self-expression.
Spread of individualism has weakened community (collective identity of a social
group, bonds of comradeship, loyalty, and duty) and the sense of belonging.
Durkheim emphasized the degree to which the weakening of social codes and
norms had resulted in the spread of anomie (a weakening of values and normative
rules, associated with feeling of isolation, loneliness and meaninglessness. This also
led to growth of egoism and atomism while weakening of social duty and moral
responsibility. Conceiving individual as logically prior to and outside the community,
liberal individualism has legitimized selfishness and greed.
While liberal theorists viewed rising individualism as a mark of social progress.
Spread of progressive, social values such as tolerance and equality of opportunity.
Link between individualism and expansion of choice and opportunity has also been
highlighted by the spread in modern societies of social reflexivity, tendency of
individuals and other social actors to reflect, more or less continuously, on the
conditions of their own actions, implying higher levels of self-awareness & selfknowledge. This has occurred as a result of mass education, wider access to
information, intensified cultural flows between societies.
However, it is important not to overstate the advance of individualism or the erosion
of community. In Asia there are anti-individualist societies, i.e. Japan.
